It's good to hear about other people's traditions, particularly as regards country and location and background.

Your thing with the ornaments is neat and a great way to remember a year! And I think it's a wise thing to buy a breakable and an indestructable! :)

Curious question: what did you end up having at the Chinese restaurants? (And, yes, Christmas/1st Jan doesn't have the same impact on Asian countries that, say, Chinese/Lunar New Year does - those shut down the cities almost entirely!)

and the kids are allowed to stay up if they want to, regardless of age

Once I hit my teen years, I was allowed to stay up to midnight on New Year's Eve, and go out to parties (where, I admit, I usually raided the bookcase).
