"This is the part of the day I love! I know there's something bizarre out there, I just don't know what it is."

I have to say, although I probably wouldn't say it quite as...gleefully as Walter does, there's a certain amount of truth in his words here...

1.12 - The No-Brainer

I like that they're exploring Peter's background in crime and "weird connections." (Although that's actually later in Ability, I believe.) And the whole Peter-Walter dynamic is great: the son is protecting the father - which is what's happening, of course. But, yeah, it can go too far. And I love that Olivia calls Peter on it in the middle of the episode. And that Walter has sorrow and compassion and everything.

Olivia and her sister and niece are...interesting. It's fairly obvious the sister's younger, I think. And I find it kind of funny that the sister flirts with Peter when he's around playing with her daughter. There's probably a fic in there...which has been written by everyone multiple times.

The 'villain' of this episode seems...well, juvenile. It's pretty obvious his son isn't the brightest bulb in the chandelier, but it's rather painful to hear the father blaming everything on everyone else. "I wanted to hurt them the way they hurt me!" Um. By killing their loved ones? Yeah, no. Even in the best of cases, that's not justice, that's revenge. And not just petty revenge, like, I don't know, sending pornos or the JWs (whichever they would deem more horrifying) to their door, but killing people to equate hurt? Wow. Overblown sense of self-importance, right there.

Although do people have to be so stupid as to click on something they don't know the origins of? Why yes, of course they do. STUPID PEOPLE.

1.13 - The Transformation
a.k.a. "John Scott says hi; Olivia says goodbye."

I'm beginning to hate the episodes on planes. Like, HATE hate. *shudder* I'm never going to board a plane again without thinking of Fringe and the nasty things that happen while passengers are all cooped up. I know it's not rational, but my imagination runs overtime...

Charlie is being asked to take a lot on Olivia's gut; it's not a very big gut. "This is going to sound insane, so let's put this in the 'crazy things happen in Walter Bishop's lab'." But he takes it pretty well. "Despite the thousand questions I have in my head right now, I'm gonna bite my tongue." Although, she does get results. Which Harris seems not to understand.

I really really don't like this Harris guy. He obstructs when he should stand back and stands back when he should obstruct and doesn't seem to be able to get beyond the idea that the rules are all very well, but when if you're planning on dealing with things that go beyond the rules then you may have to step beyond the rules, too.

OH SHIT AIRLOCK MOMENT. Maybe this makes me a bad person, but I LOVE the airlock moments: when a character on the 'good side' of things does something morally questionable. Holding off the sedative while forcing him to give up his information? FANTASTIC.

The scene where Peter drags Olivia out of the tank was beautiful. Tender and heartbreaking, and although she's just come out of a dreamscape with John, she knows exactly who's got her. It's wonderful.

1.14 - Ability

Okay, this episode is awesome. Deliciously arc-ish, lots of little mysteries, fantastic acting and weird sciency bits, and Peter becomes a believer!

A few hilarious quotations:
"Did they check his penis and anus?"
"Do you like coffee cake?"
"He also says you're just a friend."
"Walter, put the cow away, wouldja?"
"What is this place?" "It's a freak show."

Things that stand out:
  • Astrid telling Walter that she's kind of impressed, in spite of the transportation machine killing people.
  • Jones being a Walter-fanboy. Peter holding out Olivia's coat for her even as she's moving.
  • Olivia and the lightbox - for reals or major Batman Gambit by Jones?
  • The ZFT document and two realities colliding with only one to survive. (I want to ask if that's the AU with Faux!Livia, but that would be spoilery, right?)
  • The cortiphexan trials in Ohio...and Jacksonville, FL.
  • Walter's authorship of the ZFT document...

Okay, you might as well accept that I'm an Olivia/Peter shipper and probably always will be. (But I'm an Olivia/John shipper, too. I think I'm just a general Olivia all-arounder, really. Like Teyla; I could see Teyla with almost anyone, too - Ronon being the exception, probably because everyone wanted Teyla/Ronon to get her out of the way of their John OTP in SGA.)

At any rate, I'm always going to comment on the Olivia/Peter dynamics in the episode, because I loves them very deeply. *pets* It's like Kate/Will in Sanctuary, or John/Teyla in SGA. You can't make me not notice them, or stop a little part of my insides from going *squee*. It's just not gonna happen. So, you know, I like all the other stuff going on - the epic arcness and little mysteries and whatnot - to say nothing of Action!Girl Olivia, but there's no doubting that the Olivia/Peter stuff is always going to get a comment from me.

Am still enjoying this show, even through the horror aspects. I'd kind of like to write fic for it, except that, once again, I don't know that I could do the epicity of the show justice. It's very epic.
