Yes. This is precisely right for their characters, and yet it is Daniel who had the impromptu (but successful) offworld marriage, and Jack whose offworld marriage didn't fly.
When we were in my stepfather's house in Palestine, it was built around a courtyard with a central cistern, which held the household water, gathered from rain that fell on the roof during the winter. The stock was watered at a communal well a short walk away. One of the rooms (immediately to the right of the main door as one came in) was the stable, where a cow, her calf, a horse, several lambs, and a flock of goats lived. I can sympathize with Sam over the scent in the Gateroom, although I must say that every time I pass a manured field out here in farm country, I am taken back to being 7 and visiting the village. It's kind of pleasantly nostalgic!
