In all honesty, Stargate Atlantis has an element of *cringe* about it for me. I like the characters in Atlantis - all of them, as a general rule, I just don't much like the storylines they repeat from SG1, or the way characters are being deployed in the show.
I don't tend to rewatch Atlantis.
Stargate Atlantis 2.20 - Allies
I knew the gist of this ep long before I saw the ep: Atlantis goes into an alliance with the Wraith, then ends up double-crossed. I didn't know, but I guessed, that John is presumed dead at the end of the episode because that's what they do at the mid-season and end-of-season breaks. It's extremely predictable by now.
Maybe I'm jaded, but this episode had a distinctly "SG1 - 8.11 - Gemini" feel about it: enemy comes in with an offer of peace, enemy offers data on enemy race's weaknesses, but enemy turns out to be a double-cross. I'm sorry, which part of: "We've been through this before, peoples!" did you not understand? Or "I fear the Greeks when they come bearing gifts?"
There was also the sheer and unalloyed stupidity of allowing Wraith to walk through Atlantis. To quote Joss: "You put some of the best military brains in the government into the same room as a telepath?"
And the Wraith turned into an Elf. From LotR. SRSLY.
The parts that made me laugh were Elizabeth's expression when Shep mentions his grandchildren (a.k.a. "like you're going to survive that long"), Shep's complete and total unconcern about Rodney when he was on the Wraithship while Zelenka is fretting (a.k.a. "Rodney/Zelenka OTP!"), Ronon's protectiveness with Rodney (a.k.a. "Rodney/Ronon OTP!"), the pose of Shep and Rodney at the conclusion of their presentation of the grand master plan (a.k.a. "we've been spending too much time around each other"), and the look Shep gives Rodney when Rodney pats his arm (a.k.a. "WTF? Did he just touch me?").
On the ship side of things, Ronon checks out Elizabeth, Elizabeth asks Ronon's opinion when deciding on the alliance, Shep seems very anxious that Teyla is 'okay' with the alliance, he talks about 'my grandkids' rather than 'our grandkids' when standing with Elizabeth, Ronon is shown to be protective of Rodney as well as Teyla, Sheppard doesn't fret about Rodney while Zelenka does, and Sheppard isn't used to close, casual contact with Rodney.
Yes, I know, my take, fanon is a wonderful thing, etc, etc, etc. Whatever.
And Michael wanted to see Teyla. No, it's not nice, sweet, romantic, and certainly not 'what she deserves' - but I find it fascinating to look at them as mirrors of each other: the human with a touch of Wraith in her, the Wraith who knows what it is to be human. I am exceedingly happy that Michael will be back in S3.
So, yeah; saw the betrayal coming a mile away, predicted how it would be done, and the main thing I'm hoping for 3.01 - Allies, Part Two is that the Atlantis peeps actually do something to rescue Shep, Ronon, and Rodney. Ideally, I'd like to see Teyla, Elizabeth, and Zelenka swing in and rescuetheir respective loved ones the guys, but I have a pernicious and perverted fondness for 'minor' characters, and particularly the girls, and specifically the girls saving the day, which neither the fandom, nor TPTB particularly hold with.
I think I'm becoming jaded about Atlantis. I keep hearing the fandom in my head, whinging, whining, moaning, making excuses. And I've been watching these PTB too long - I'm beginning to wonder if they have anything new in them. It's like reading Mercedes Lackey: the characters are of a type and they will be used in a specific way, and things will turn out for the best - because that's what they do.
Ah well. I like the characters - I just don't like the characters the majority of people like.

Yeah, I don't rewatch 'lantis as much as SG-1. And I see the repeat of themes. And I hate the presume dead "cliffhangers". old hat.
Ah well. I like the characters
I think you ably voiced my sentiments in general, but specifically the first half of this sentence. I like the characters; I don't love them as much as I love the characters of SG-1 (and *did* love them this far into watching the show).

Heh, when Shep made his grandkids comment and Elizabeth stared at him I assumed she was thinking "Wow, his offworld 'encounters' must really be getting out of control." ;)
