anyone up for an apocalypse?

This year, apocalypse_kree has prompts for all three Stargate shows - SG1, SGA, and SGU. Whatever your Stargate preference, they can provide!



The prompt list is found here and you get to pick your own prompt. There are all kinds of character-focused, pairing-focused, team, and gen prompts available - and even most of the pairing-focused prompts are "if you want" rather than "you must".

I'm debating whether to sign-up for this. I've completed almost none of my non-reciprocal stories this year, and my desire to write original fiction is growing stronger. My actual writing ability, however, seems to be getting worse, which presents a painful contradiction: the more I want to write original fiction, the less capable I feel of actually doing it.

It's also getting harder to write SGA fanfic. My focus was always on Teyla, and the handful of people who actively liked Teyla (as compared to all the people who think she's great but who wouldn't even contemplate writing a story with her as a major, involved character) have long since packed up and left for other fandoms. Of those that remain, very few are interested in anything to do with her - most stories are still about John and Rodney, and if Teyla and Ronon are included, it's almost inevitably as support staff at best, rather than as main characters doing something to help the plot along.

I know, the Teyla Thing-A-Thon is coming due in less than a week. We can hope for good stuff there - but even when there's good stuff, nobody reads it and the majority of people don't comment on it.

Tielan, your writing ability is not getting worse in any way, shape, or form. I think you're just getting too self-critical, and the fact that you're writing primarily in corners of fandom with not a lot of activity is depressing you and making things worse. You are a very good writer. If I were you, I would find a *non-fannish* orig-fic writing group that focuses on the kinds of writing you like to do, join it, and concentrate on that for a while. And try and focus on your writing brain, not your editing brain, because it's quite possible that you're tripping yourself up.

I love your fic. But I want you to be happy writing more than I want you to write the stuff that I want to read. You are a great writer, and I love you and want you to be happy.

It is harder to turn off the 'inner editor' in my head these days - I tend to second-guess myself and my writing a lot: is this the right word choice? Should I pick something else? Am I getting the story I want to write across to the audience?

I don't know how to turn it off, though. And the radio silence isn't really helping.

Apocalypse \o/ I'm thinking about signing up, but I don't know if I'll have the time. At least it's no exchange - I'm always too shy/nervous to sign up for exchanges.

I love Teyla! I just wrote a fic with her as the main character. It was fun :D There can never be enough Teyla stories, even if the fandom is getting smaller. And I'm looking forward to the Teyla thing-a-thon. Will leave comments, I promise.

Your writing isn't getting worse, you're just more critical. That's normal :) And if you want to write original fiction, go for it! I hope you'll still post it because I'd love to read it, but whatever makes you happy.
