TITLE: Happy Endings Are All Alike
SUMMARY: SGC picnic day. With John Sheppard.
CATEGORY: Fluff. Sap. Corn. Cheese. In short: the whole Enchilada.
RATING: PG-13
NOTES: Another challenge fic - this one was for [livejournal.com profile] sparklingjadex who asked for "General Sheppard and family visiting Earth after choosing to stay in Atlantis after the Wraith have been defeated". This doesn't quite work the way I wanted it to - I'm not good with futurefics that feature marriage and kids, (unless there's action-adventure, mortal peril, and some serious angst involved) but I did my best!

Happy Endings Are All Alike

Jon O'Neill liked happy endings.

It wasn't something he advertised; after all, he had a perfectly good hardass reputation to keep. But, happy endings, all the same. Life didn't always provide happy endings, though, so he learned to settle for the reasonable ending.

He'd learned to settle for a lot of things in his almost-sixty years.

His attitude and speech often confused people, especially when they assumed he was the twenty-something he appeared to be. Daniel and Alex both had a lot to say about people condescending towards them, although Will observed that they had little trouble once they opened their mouths and began speaking with all the weight of their fifty-plus years of knowledge.

Luckily for Jon and his friends, John Sheppard seemed to be used to the 'dealing with the unexpected' - as a man had to be after twelve years heading up the Pegasus expedition - now the Pegasus outpost. After a brief initial surprise, the man had dealt with Jon like an equal, not a junior - and Jon was pretty happy.

"So," he said to the man standing beside him on the rise, "who's your money on?"

"You're assuming I have money," Sheppard remarked wryly as they watched the two teams creep across the loosely forested obstacle course.

"No MasterCard in Pegasus?"

"We're working on it. McKay keeps claiming he needs something with which to trade on."

"I'd have thought his superior intellect could come up with something to trade on," Jon noted. "But I was actually thinking backpay. You do get backpay."

Sheppard snorted. "For all the good it does to me in Pegasus," he said wryly.

"What, Teyla doesn't spend it all when you're on Earth?" Jon had heard about Teyla's shopping propensities. Alex wasn't much of a woman for shopping, but apparently Elizabeth Weir didn't mind a good, long shopping spree, and Teyla was a devotee.

"We're going to need a shipping crate to get it all back to Pegasus," said Sheppard with a sigh. "And Helynn isn't coming with us next time."

"Like mother, like daughter?" Jon smirked.

Down in the field, the teams stalked each other, the mix of professional soldiers and Academy cadets producing some unexpected tactics as the older and familiar blended with the youthful and inventive.

"People keep insisting Helynn's like me," Sheppard said wryly.

Jon thought of the dark-haired girl who'd whooped with glee as she swung up on one of Will's horses, then gaily challenged Corran Dex to a race which the young man had hardly been able to refuse. "Mightn't that be because she is?"

"Wait until you have kids," came the retort. "I never believed that parents get the children they deserve until Helynn."

Glancing back towards the house and the slim, lithe figure of the girl in the lead of the kids chasing after T.J., Jon smirked. "Where's your son?"

Sheppard turned around to regard the crowd of people - mostly SGC and Academy folks - gathered at the house. "Probably running around with the other kids." He squinted slightly. "Yeah, Josh's down there."

"You're not worried?"

A shrug. "In this crowd? He's less likely to get in trouble here than exploring through the city."

Given that Joshua Sheppard was a seven year-old with the Ancient gene, a touch of telepathy, and a habit of pulling things apart to see how they worked, Jon could see why Sheppard wasn't too worried about a crowd of kids running around a yard with adults everywhere.

Sheppard glanced at him. "You going to have some of your own?"

"We're working on it."

The 'older' man grinned. "There's work involved?"

Amused, Jon replied. "Don't let Carter hear you say that."

"Sam? Or Alex?"

"Both."

They watch the melee below for a few minutes more. Then, "Blue."

"I'm sorry?"

"My money's on the blue team."

Jon regarded the teams down on the field, did a quick headcount, took mental note of where the flags are, reminded himself who was on which team and agreed with Sheppard's assessment. "Good choice."

"I know."

And when the teams made their slow way up the hill, tired and happy, successful and unsuccessful, Jon let his eye rest on the woman with the caramel-coloured hair and the dusky skin, dressed in not-quite-fatigues, trailing the flag behind her. Their first ally in the Pegasus system - and without a doubt the most loyal.

Possibly one of the best looking, too.

It looked like Colonel Carl Romarov had an eye on her. That wasn't surprising; Romarov was a man for the ladies whose charm had cut swathes through the women on Earth and off. He wasn't quite handsome, but he was good company, charming, and loved women - all of them. It had earned him the name 'Colonel Casanova' among his peers, and he took the name with a smile and a smirk that other men envied.

Presently, he was exerting his charm on Ms. Emmagen who was regarding him with the smiling tolerance of a woman accustomed to the blandishments of charming men.

Sheppard muttered something about moths and flame. Jon knew the feeling. There were mornings when he woke up next to Alex, watched the light creep across her face, and wondered what the hell she was doing with him - at least until she opened her eyes and told him to stop being an idiot.

So much for chains of command.

The soldiers crested the hill. Some of them glanced at Sheppard and Jon and cocked quick salutes at them. They knew Jon - and who he wasn't. But they saluted him anyway. He appreciated the gesture - after all, the first forty-eight years of Jack O'Neill's life had been his life, too.

At the back of the group, Teyla was shaking her head and smiling as she declined whatever offer Romarov was making her.

"And I can't change your mind about that?" Romarov could be insistent when he wanted, although he also knew when to take a 'no'. The man just didn't mind pushing a little further instead of taking the first answer.

"Her mind doesn't need changing," Sheppard said, entering into the conversation as he slipped a casually possessive arm around Teyla's waist.

Romarov blinked as he realised whose partner he'd just propositioned.

All the SGC personnel knew John Sheppard - by reputation, if nothing else. Plucked from shame, he'd covered himself with glory in the Atlantis expedition - as had most of the personnel who'd survived the five years of war with the Wraith. Not as long as the eight with the Goa'uld, but then, they'd been experienced in fighting a galactic war the second time around.

To give Romarov credit, the man was quick and smooth with the apology, straightening like an errant cadet. "Sorry, sir, ma'am. I didn't mean to give offence."

Sheppard's eyes narrowed, but Teyla was faster with a response. "No apology is necessary," she said, her voice smooth and rich as a full-bodied coffee blend. "I appreciate the compliment."

Romarov made a quick getaway, but couldn't help giving Teyla one more backwards glance as he strolled down the hill with his friends.

Some women collected hearts like lepidopterists would collect butterflies. Teyla didn't notice the colonel's backwards glance - she was looking at Sheppard with a challenge in her eyes.

"I should keep you on a leash," he noted, kissing her on the brow.

"I believe you have already tried that," she replied, turning a wicked expression on him. "And Joshua came of it."

Jon coughed, hiding a smile at Sheppard's embarrassment. But the man had his revenge in whatever he whispered in Teyla's ear. Her dusky skin went a glowing pink colour and she stepped out and away from his arm with a reproving look before walking away. She passed Alex coming up the hill and the two women exchanged brief words.

Sheppard smirked, then caught Jon's quirk of the brow and shrugged as he set off after his lover. "Private joke."

"Make sure it stays that way," Jon called after him. "If I catch you necking in the storage room..." He let the threat trail off as Alex reached him.

She looked from him to the retreating Sheppard. "I shouldn't ask?"

"You shouldn't ask," Jon affirmed and slung an arm around her waist, preparing to amble down to the party again. They were halfway down the hill when he murmured, "Have I ever mentioned that I love happy endings?"

FINAL NOTES: Jon, Alex, Daniel, and Will, their house, their farm, their training facility, and TJ-the-dog are the invention of [livejournal.com profile] sgcbearcub, whose trilogy "Monkey Screaming", "Mirror Image" and "Silk And Chains" kicks the asses of any fanfic I have ever known in Stargate fandom. I have borrowed them without permission here, and hope to God she doesn't kill me for it. (I only just realised that she might not want them borrowed. CRAP!)

BONUS POINTS FOR STORAGE CLOSET!

I like this. It was fun and light and a nice break from the apocafic I seem to be stuck on.

I thought for a minute at the beginning that this was [livejournal.com profile] miniotp, but then realized we had OCs....which is fine, even though I had no idea who they were. Everyone fit in, even though I didn't know some of them, and it was a good fic.

er...wait...so it is [livejournal.com profile] miniotp?

*so confused*

It's OTP in the sarcastic sense. They've done their best to cast actors, but I am not sure if the Atlantis ones have been done yet...

The theory is that the Asgard cloned Sam to ... er ... keep Jack company. And I've read stories where Teal'c, Daniel and even Janet get added. So theoretically, you could add anyone you want. It's a big (alternate) universe...

I'm thinking Teyla would be played by the little girl from Spanglish (terrible movie!)...hmmm...maybe not (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1511677/).

Great job! The whole thing just kind of unfolds as you read it, and at the end you're just left with this...awwww kind of feeling. It's a huggable fic. ;) Love it!

Hi, you don't know me, but I've been reading your fics for a month or two now and I was wondering if I could friend you. I love your stuff, you're so good at telling a story through the senses and though at first I never thought it was possible between Ronon and Elizabeth, after reading your stuff I'm addicted!

Thanks so much!

Oh, I LOVED this! It wasn't chessy at all. It felt very comfortable, like I'd been knowing all of these people for a long time. Enjoyed the connection to Atlantis. I'm one of the few who loves Shep/Teyla although not rabidly so. You wrote them well together.

Very Nicely done. More please. :D

I usually shy away from marriage and baby fics, but you handled this very well.

Stumbled over this completely by accident, lol. You have no idea how weird-and cool, did I say cool? it is to see your own characters in someone else's fic. Especially a writer as talented as you.

Loved the fic too by the way. I don't normally read Atlantis since i haven't seen any of the eps, but this was easy to understand and thoroughly enjoyable.

Borrow away-blanket permission!
