How It Works:
Post to your DW/LJ (publicly or locked) with a list of ten things you want to receive for the holidays. They can be anything, from a personalized DW/LJ icon or drabble to a purebred puppy - as long as all the items on the list are things that you genuinely want.
If there's anything on your list that needs to come to you through the mail, make your shipping address available, but please be safe about it and don't post that part publicly - just specify how people should go about getting it.
Next:
Look around your circle/friends list for others who have posted the meme. (The more who do, the better this works, so encourage them!) If you see a wish you can grant, GO FOR IT. You might find a little thing you can do for free that will make someone happy, or you might just discover that a stranger is longing for the exact boxed set of DVDs that you no longer want.
Don't spend money unless you want to, and don't commit to more than you can handle without stressing yourself. There are no rules to this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. If someone surprises you with a gift certificate to the restaurant you never thought you'd get to go to, don't feel guilty or obliged to return the favor. The point is to spread around a lot of opportunities to grant wishes - use them as you see fit, and remember that your list gives those opportunities to others!
Tips:
Dream big, but stay practical. If you really want the Mercedes, put the Mercedes on the list, but don't forget that you also really want some feedback on the story you wrote - so put that on the list too. It's fun to imagine something huge happening through this meme, but we'll recognizes the unlikelihood of it and make sure our friends still have a chance to do something thoughtful that's within their means.
Put limits on yourself for what, but not who: if you've decided that you can spend a few hours drawing a picture, but none of your friends are asking for one, keep looking for wishlists - you might even make a new friend or two! Ask people to link their lists for you, and don't be afraid to post your own in a few places.
Let's make some wishes come true this year!
1. Avengers fic. Maria or Steve/Maria. I don't care if it's a ficlet or if it's a novel. There's zero fic for this character or this pairing that I am not producing (or requesting). Which is fine for everyone else reading and enjoying my stories, but becomes exhausting for me. I would like to read a Maria/Steve ficlet (or a Maria-centric one) that I didn't write myself. Actually, I would like to read an archive of them, but in the name of realism, I'll settle for one or two! (Actually, I'd be kind of interested in Maria/Tony or Maria/Bruce, too, if it's as much about Maria as it is about the guy.)
2. Heather Ross' fabric collection "Mendocino Mermaids". If you happen to spot these fabrics anywhere in your local fabric/quilt shops, let me know, please! (I've looked at it on Etsy and it's crazy expensive there - as in in the area of $50-80/yd. I'm looking for cheaper options.)
3. Fanmixes/music recs. I tend to like pop music, or things I can sing to. Jazz and blues are wonderful. Modern classical. Classical Jazz. K-pop and J-pop are possibilities, although I always prefer melody over beat. I like the Glee reproductions, even if I don't watch the show.
4. Book recs and/or books. Any genre but horror. Female lead characters, preferably stoic action women. Or women who act to change things instead of watching things passively run by. Alternatively, het romance authors (other than Nora Roberts, Georgette Heyer, Lisa Kleypas, and Loretta Chase - there are more, but these are the ones I'm thinking of right now). Any high fantasy with strong female leads? Rec me those, too!
5. Good screencaps of Maria Hill from the Avengers movie. Hi-def ones of her, clear and focused on her face and expressions. I'm trying to work out how to screencap them, but I don't have the software right now. (Recs for good screencapping software - preferably free - would be appreciated, too.)
6. Recs for tablet apps. Word processing, mind maps, etc. The new computer is going to be more of a tablet in hardware format than a traditional computer. Although I might need an old-fashioned desktop at some stage.
7. Graphics/art for any of my fics. Any fic, any scene, any character. Drawn art, photomanips, headers, bookplates - whatever!
8. A mad crossover fic of female characters from disparate fandoms. Any of the following would be awesome. All would be amazing, but I don't expect all! Teyla Emmagan (Stargate Atlantis), Ziva David (NCIS), Maria Hill (Marvel Cinematic Universe), Luna Lovegood (Harry Potter), Rose Weasley (Harry Potter, NextGen), Diana, Princess of Themiscyra (Justice League Unlimited), Inara Serra (Firefly), Zoe Washburne (Firefly), River Tam (Firefly), Faith Lehane (BtVS/Angel), Sam Carter (Stargate SG1), Gwen (Merlin), Nyota Uhura (2009), Kono Kalakaua (H50), Joan Watson (Elementary), Irene Adler (Sherlock), Kate Beckett (Castle)
9. If you're here reading my DW/LJ because you like my fic, I'd love a comment on one of my stories. Go detailed. Be specific! Ramble! Get into things you interpreted and how you saw it, if I made you think or laugh or cry or ache inside. I love to hear from people who enjoyed my stories, but people seem reluctant to leave comments on my fics. Think of it as the 'comment confessional' - no deep dark secret too deep or dark!
10. A postcard from wherever you are with a pic of your local countryside. PM me for an address.
Link your lists in the comments, and I'll see what I can do for you. Or for others on your f-list.
