It seems that SGA has been renewed for another season, while SG1 has been cancelled.
All in all, it's not terribly surprising news.

For those of you who love the entire series and don't mind a John/Teyla as a pairing - canonically or fanonically, there's finally a community that's general with J/T leanings -
atlantislovers. The moderator regularly posts caps of the episodes from week to week with some humourous commentary.

And, for those keeping up with the debacle of
sga_flashfic's remix challenge (less than 24 hours and it's already on Fandom_Wank - Don't Underestimate The Power Of The Wank!), please do not use any of my stories for the challenge . I'm not planning to enter this challenge (truth be told, I'm relieved it's not one I feel at all drawn to write for) so I won't be taking any of your stories to remix. In return, I ask that you don't remix any of mine.
All in all, it's not terribly surprising news.

Less than a WEEK after the 200th episode preimeres and fans are still in awe and wonder, *BAM* they cancel it?
Weridos. They should've announced at the beginning of the season that this would be SG-1's last season, because they were clearly holding onto the news to be released at a time of their choosing.

Skiffy allegedly broke the news to them at the 200th Ep celebration party.
Way to throw a bucket of cold water on the party.

couldn't even wait til AFTER the party!?

Agreed.

I *am* glad Atlantis is staying. Words can't describe how mad I'd be if it were cancelled too.
:(

Or Skiffy might just try to get SGA to the 100th ep and then dump it.
And there's apparently another Stargate spin-off on the cards. So depending on how that performs, SGA may find itself in SG1's position...

There's grattitude for ya.

You can't just launch a spin-off (unless is about the Ancients in their time) without the first show because SGA certainly is going to be able to launch a spin-off on its own.
To be honest, I don't think SGA will last long without SG-1, let alone a third show. Most (not all but most) spin-offs don't survive without the first show.
They may have been able to pull it off had SGA stayed isolated from SG-1 (like it had during the first season) but there's too much interconnection between the two for SGA to survive on its own.

It is a big pity for Atlantis that they've cancelled SG-1, especially since they were building the 'gate-bridge' from Pegasus to the Milky Way - it would have given an interesting opportunity for semi-regular crossovers with blends and reblends of the characters in different situations.
Whether TPTB would have taken up those opportunities is another situation entirely.
To be honest, I'd give SGA until the 100th episode, after that, it's all up in the air. Showtime only kept SG1 for five years before putting it up for Skiffy.

As for SGA and their 100th episode. Is it just me or is this a growing trend? Most shows seem to be ending once they hit the end of five seasons. It's like their cut off mark or something, no matter what the ratings are.

Then again, as shown, it's not the writers who determine what shows keep going.
It might just be that TV channels want new shows for new audiences, rebranding and adjusting their 'franchise' as they go along.

Either I'm getting old or networks are trying to appeal to younger and younger audiences. I'm always hearing all this talk to trying to target the 18-24 group. Which is intreasting because I fall in that group and the networks keep trying to appeal to my age group but I'm just getting turned off.

And unfortunately the definition of 'doing so well' is viewed very differently between the TV executive boardroom and the living room of the fan.
But yes, it's sad. I'm not surprised, but I am a little saddened.
