ARR!
Mateys, I'm thinkin' about me writin' styles, and givin' the ol' meme a go.
Keyboard or Longhand?
Keyboard. Only keyboard. I even make notes via keyboard these days. Handwritten is strictly for when I want to be decorative or I haven't got a file open on hand. Or if I'm at work and just want to scribble a few fic notes down.
Beta or no beta?
Usually beta. I prefer getting a beta to read my stuff through. Unfortunately, I've been writing so much and such varied stuff that it's impossible to keep a beta who'll read all my work and get it back to me in reasonable nick.
Plot?
Yes. And no. It depends. At the least, it needs to wind around a theme - even if the theme is nothing more than smut!
Title?
I try to think of inventive things. Usually I fail. But lately, I've been trying to take from song lines and titles since other people are far more creative than I could ever be.
Smushy or smutty?
Smutty over smushy. I dislike soppy - none of the characters I write about strike me as soppy - if they cry, then it's because something emotionally shattering has happened to them and there's too much for them to comfortably cope with.
Summary?
These days, I usually go with a line from the fic. I hate trying to think of a suitable summary, especially with the longer, plot-based fics. The summaries I try to write always seem to come out horribly clichéd.
Funniest fic?
Oh, this is a tricky one... Um... When The Kittens Have You? I was better at writing humour early on in the show. These days, not so much.
Most popular fic?
To Serve A Queen, without a doubt. That was probably the fic that gained me the most interest. I still get comments on it nearly 10 months later.
Most fun to write?
I dunno. I don't know that any of the stories are fun to write - they take blood and sweat and tears and anguish out of me, and I look at the final product and sometimes I'm satisfied, but not always.
Best and worst?
Best fic... I can't say that any of them are my 'best', but I have soft spots for certain fics: Different, Yield and The Twice-Drowned, Exile And Family and Five Men Who Never Wanted Teyla Emmagen. There's always stories like More Than Enough and Carved Up and Whipped and Beholden, The Travelling Sense Of Home and Danger Is A Relative Thing, Avoidance Techniques...oh, and Sacrifice. I'm really proud of Sacrifice, even if people didn't like it much - probably because it worked for me, very smooth and calm, but with the look into Teyla's background and Teyla and Elizabeth as friends.
Worst? Well, I write a lot of crappy stuff. At least, stuff that I personally think is pretty crappy. For some reason, it just doesn't work for me and I feel like the story was forced.
Actually, that's the way I feel about a lot of my fic lately.
Coulda been contenders?
Um... Do I have any fics left after that list? *is slightly embarrassed*
Strengths
I like to think I have a way with simple turns of phrases, plots that work, and reasonably solid characterisation. I may not favour the same characters as 95% of the rest of the fandom, but I think I can write them both as they're depicted in the show, but with the potential that they'll never see in the show because it's a show. And I think I do the team pretty well.
Weaknesses
Descriptions, I think. Engaging the emotion and the sensations that are going through the protagonist's mind. Particularly in action-scenes, I tend to write bloodlessly - this happens, then that happens, then something else happens - no drama, no frantic rush, no panic... And I have a weakness for giving Teyla actual lines and things to do that are relevant to the story at hand.
Dirty Little Secrets?
I want to write a Rodney/Ronon set of fics, running from the PG-13 to the NC-17. I doubt that most of my regulars would read it, and I have the impression that I've somehow acquired a rep as a homophobe, so most slash fans or fans with strong ties in the slash community won't touch my work with a ten-foot pole, but the slashbunnies are there all the same.
Have fun talking like a pirate, today!
