9th Jan - Tell me what you like most about crafting? by

Crafting is a combination of problem-solving and creativity. It’s like the best of both my mental worlds in one!
There’s the goal – the concept that I get to imagine, the idea image I have in my head. Then there’s the process of working out how I’m going to get there, how to achieve the result I want. There’s the practicalities of it: working out what issues I’m going to face, how do I overcome them, what do I need to learn along the way?
And then there’s the process of doing – the satsifaction of making something with my own hands, even if (as in the case of quilting) it’s been made with the assistance of a machine. The hard yards have already been done in my head – a trained monkey could do the rest!
Quilting is a particular pleasure with the tactility of the fabric – the ‘hand’ as my friend jenndoesnotcare says – the beauty of the pattern, the synergy of the design – where all the little pieces come together in a whole that is so much greater than the sum of their parts, and the satisfaction of having made something big and impressive and which can last.
Additionally, at the end of the process, there’s something functional, creative, and which I or someone else can use!
Speaking of which, I really have to start planning my 2014 Quilt Show quilt. And let the church know that my 2013 Quilt Show quilt is available for decorating their offices if they like. Otherwise I have no idea what I’m going to do with it...
