20th December - [livejournal.com profile] crazy4orcas asked "You're in charge of writing the Pacific Rim Sequel -- what's the story?"

*eyes you* Don't think I can't spot what you're doing! Again.

Okay. This isn't as long or as detailed as the MCU movies – not even close. It's more of a general idea than anything concrete.

But it would once again be all about the female character.

Pacific Rim II: Electric KaijuBlue? )

So, general themes rather than detailed plot.

But I still see what you were trying to do there! :D

22nd Jan- why should we all love Maria Hill? requested by [personal profile] justhuman

Maria Hill is the character in the MCU who does her job.

That's it. She does her job. )

Note: this was started back in January and modified a bunch of times. Given that Maria's in Cap2 (which I'm going to see tomorrow) and is apparently pretty awesome, it may not be accurate anymore, and even so, it was cobbled together from a bunch of reactions to Maria all over Tumblr, the intarwebs, and from hardcore comics fans.

17th January: Something about yourself that might surprise people who know you on the internet - bethanyactually

I'm not sure there's anything that would surprise people who know me on the internet. I've been on the internet for a while now and I'm not terribly private.

I grew up very conservative and still hold to many of those beliefs. I just think that the world needs to be large enough to encompass and protect those who don't fall in the same categories as me.

13th Jan - Favourite Headcanons (requested by [personal profile] majoline

1. Stargate SG-1:

Mini!Jack eventually got the SGC to make a Mini!Team to join him.

(Recommended reading: 'Monkey Screaming', 'Mirror Image', and 'Silk And Chains' by sgcbearcub.)

2. Stargate Atlantis:

The Wraith have a society structure all their own, that developed out of a one female-many-males gender imbalance. There are rules and social strata, and personal rivalries, and although they're telepathic, they're not a hive mind.

(Taken from the Stargate Atlantis: Legacy book series, which is so totally worth the read.)

Teyla Emmagan dreams of the Wraith Queen whose bloodline she hails from. Because she's female, and developed her gifts the way no other human-inheritor of the Wraith genes ever has, she can 'read' as a Wraith Queen to the Wraith – or an ordinary human if she prefers. Torran, because he has Wraith genes from both sides of his bloodlines, can also telepathically read as a Wraith, but Kanaan can't.

3. Marvel Cinematic Universe:

Maria Hill got into S.H.I.E.L.D because she took an interest in Peggy. She spotted a female working with the Howling Commandos who was never mentioned by name, and went on a research bent. Since she was researching a one-time Director of S.H.I.E.L.D, her searches raised flags until Peggy gave authorisation for her to be found. Peggy was quite impressed and kept an eye on Maria even after she entered the marines – right up until the point where their paths crossed in Madripoor.

(See: Day 3 – MCU Movies)

4. Pacific Rim:

Angela Hansen was working on Military Rd, Neutral Bay, the day Scissure attacked. She thought she might be pregnant with her second child (she had the pregnancy tests in her bag for when she got home), but when an opportunity came to get away, she forwent her place in favour of a single mum and a woman who was six months pregnant.

Mako Mori and Chuck Hansen have a personal history together, but it's been over for several years. It had nothing to do with Drift compatibility, and everything to do with them both being young and stupidly arrogant and intense. (Mako, too, just not the swaggering arrogance that Chuck still shows.) Chuck's reaction to Raleigh is at least one part jealousy.

Doing as much writing as I do, I have a lot of headcanons floating around my skull! :)

7th Jan - how awesome are pairings of emotionally reserved/ruthless women and more emotionally open men?

The simple answer to this is "really awesome".

The complex answer is...complex.

...or did you want me to ramble about my favourite pairings? Because I can do that, too!

5th Jan - To ship or not to ship? requested by [personal profile] monanotlisa:

The discussion that prompted this question was (IIRC) more in terms of 'when is a ship label a lure and when is a ship label a warning' but touched a little on het and gen (because neither of us naturally incline towards slash) and pairing prefs and why we like what we like.

I don't know that I ever get a choice to ship – I usually just do.

There'll be more about my pairing dynamics tomorrow.

This is short because I'm about to undertake a 6-hour drive out to a baby shower/weekend with friends.

[personal profile] justhuman asked:

Tell me about Natasha Romanov

Natasha is a source of great curiosity to me in at least one respect. She's everything that I should be looking for in a character – on paper, she hits all my hotspots, and yet...I'm just not that into her. I like her, I'll read about her, I'll include her in my fics, but I didn't get fannish about her.

I guess Natasha is to me what Maria Hill is to most people: yeah, she's okay, but I'm just not that into her.

Note: I might have to shuffle topics off the weekends so I get some breathing space.

If you could write your own movie for Marvel -- who would make up your cast and what would be a general outline of the movie? Would you set it up for sequels, or maybe go the trilogy route?

AHAHAHAHAHA!

Dangerous, dangerous topic this one! But at the end of this, I want you to remember that YOU ASKED FOR IT.

Okay, I'd go trilogy route, because, hey, TRILOGY. (Plus, we really need more stories about women. Lots more stories.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Trilogy: The Director, The Cavalry, The Steel Fist )

Whew! I spent most of the day putting this together, reading up character bios in the films and working out which characters could do what...

ETA: ...and I just saw the news about the Peggy Carter TV series. Almost certainly would go a very different direction.

Favourite travel experience

This is tricky. Do I talk about in terms of the people I saw? The most exciting events that occurred? The most memorable?

I guess that if I have to recall any trip really fondly, it would be the trip to Atlanta for DragonCon 2009.

Between the massive convention experience, the writing seminar with Aaron Allston and Michael A Stackpole, the catchup with friends at the convention, and the mind-boggling cosplays in the lobby of the Atlanta Marriott, I'd say that's the experience I most want to repeat.

I think it helped that I avoided all the media panels, and the signing queues (although I do kind of wish I'd gone to get Rachel Luttrell's signature), and just mostly hung out with friends and did the writing seminar. I'd love to do it again, though! Hopefully meeting more people, now that my fandom interaction base has grown...

Or, you know, any convention where I can hole up with a bunch of other fannish people, write all day, and cosplay all night... :)

Women in fandom, either as characters or the fans themselves

There are so many directions this topic could take - fandom as a female-dominated space vs. fandom as a female-friendly space, female characters and the types of characters that I like vs. the female characters that most other people seem to like...

Okay, well, I guess we'll go with my love of female characters and how that's affected the fannish friends I've made.

Belated: for January instead. (Besides, December was mad with fic exchanges.)

Pick a date below and give me a topic — it can be anything, from fandom related to life related to art related to theology to politics or whatever you want.

They will probably be brief, or not, depending on the subject.

Also, I reserve the right to decline prompts that I don’t feel equipped to meet.

Topics: you can get an idea from my tags/from the stuff I usually ramble about/from things you maybe wish I talked about more but don’t.

You can request multiple topics (as long as they’re on different days — one topic per day!).
