20th Jan - Favourite fandom experience/era/interactions - requested by [livejournal.com profile] purple_cube:

Maybe this is a case of the 'good old days' but I have particularly fond memories of the Sam-Jack Horsewomen on Stargate SG-1 fandom, particularly during Season Six of SG1.

In early 2001, I somehow got hooked into watching the first three seasons of Stargate SG-1. I think it was that my local video store (yes, we still had video stores back in those days) had the first three or so seasons of SG-1 in video form, and I'd just moved into a new place where it was just me and the TV.

I kind of OD'd on Stargate SG-1 for the better part of two months, then moved to Sydney for work, and found myself with a new internet connection and a desire to know more about this show (since it was apparently somewhere in the middle of Season Four or Five and I'd only seen up to the Season Three episode 'Shades of Grey').

And somehow I stumbled on the samandjack mailing list. Yahoogroups was the place to be back in those days - a steady flow of emails discussing, spoiling, chatting...and writing Sam/Jack fanfic.

I scribbled a story based on an AU idea, posted it...and received quite a favourable response. Which is to say, I got about 20 replies to my story, most of them being along the lines of "That was a really good and interesting story, and I hope that you write more!" I'd written fanfic before, but I'd never received that kind of reception before!

And I was hooked.

At some point, I started chatting with one of the BNFs on the list - Alli Snow, and then with several other people who wrote a lot of Sam/Jack fanfic. We all tended to band together online, talking in chat, and started meeting each other offline. And it was good. :)

I'm still friends with a handful of the original SJ Horsewomen - I stayed with two during my last visit to the US, and one's coming to visit me in March/April. Some drifted out of Stargate fandom, some turned their back on the group when they found slash (hallelujah for the mighty whitey peen), some got taken over by real life, a couple kind of vanished without a trace...

But, yeah, good times, good people. And I kind of miss the heyday of wherever we were - yahoogroups, LiveJournal, Bulletin Boards, AIM - it was, for me, the ultimate 'intimate group' which I've never really found since. Oh, I've made excellent friends and met wonderful people, but that daily intimate closeness? There hasn't really been anything to replicate that - which is understandable. Times change, platforms move on, people reach different stages of life.

We were young... :)

I wasn't one of the SJW, but, wow, that was the heyday of Sam/Jack and SG-1 fandom, wasn't it?

That was such a good time both on the list and just being in fandom.
