Is there any point in signing up for [livejournal.com profile] avengersfest when all I really want is Maria Hill or Maria/Steve, and so far about 10 people have signed up and Maria is either "will not write" or one of the "oh, I suppose you can write her if you really really absolutely must" listings or unmentioned in their sign-up?

In related thoughts, thanks to a conversation with a friend from SGA fandom (well, with her and assorted other people): am I the only one who finds Maria an interesting character who is worthy of fannish development (ie. fanfic) without the addition of fandom?

ie. if you had never read my fic, never met me, never listened to me or read me, would you be interested in Maria at all?

Because I'm thinking that the answer for about 90% of the people I know - even the ones who love my fic and love the way I write Maria - is "No."

Which, yes, is a tremendous compliment to me, but also a little depressing.

I added you *because* of my interest in Maria.

/ie. if you had never read my fic, never met me, never listened to me or read me, would you be interested in Maria at all?/ - I definitely would but I also come from comics. Maybe it's more difficult to people who are only MCU fans?

Honestly, I'm not sure how much I'd have been interested in her if I'd come in from comics side, but that's more the comics' fault than the character's.

Hmm. I have always preferred WATCHING Maria to most MCU characters -- in particular, Clint Barton, Bruce Banner, Agent Coulson, and a bunch of others.

My current MCU Top Ten list reads something like this:

1. Natasha Romanova
2. Steve Rogers
3. Claire Temple
4. Bobbi Morse
5. Sam Wilson
6. Peggy Carter
7. Melinda May
8. Matt Murdock
9. Maria Hill
10. Nick Fury

Of course, as for WRITING even just the above -- that usually only happens for protagonists of their respective tales. I don't tend to focus on what the franchise treats as minor characters (well, you've seen my fic roster; you know). I am too canon-focused to take the ball of in actuality much cooler characters and run with it unless prompted, and given our sexist, racist, and otherwise problematic media creations that is sad.

/the emotive dramatic white females in their orbit/ - LOL
/the non-whites, or the women-that-not-everyone-wants-to-fuck/ - So true...
Sigh, maybe the solution is to shift our focus from movies (who are always going to be targeted first and foremost to while males) to tv, where we get things like Orphan Black or My Mad Fat Diaries.
/So I go off and I write them, because I like the possibilities./ - Yes, exploring all those possibilities is what makes fandom great! *_*

I'm pretty certain I found your fic and then your journal because I was looking for fic about Maria. I think you've probably made me see more in her than I first did, but so does every fic writer, that's part of what brings me to fanfic :-)

I've seen some very bad/unpleasant characterisations of her, which makes me sad.

YES. I'm not really in MCU fandom, and I haven't even seen all the movies, but the ones I actually watched first were Avengers and then Winter Soldier, and I LOVED Maria in both of them. She was instantly one of my favourites!

No! I mean, I thought Maria was pretty cool after I read an article right after the civil war event about how they just murdered her character. I thought she got a bad rap and it wasn't fair, so I started sheering for her. :D
