Lady In Red

The dress was red.

Red, Rodney reflected, was an inadequate descriptor for the colour. It was crimson, scarlet, carmine, glowing brazen against the burned honey of her skin with the brilliance of fresh-spilled blood.

And although she moved across the floor with the easy stride that took her everywhere in the city, the dress made her seem sensuous in a way that Teyla never projected.

"Oh." Rodney managed that much before his brain spluttered to a halt. "Uh, Teyla, you look..." An assortment of adjectives sprung to mind, but almost all of them would probably get him into trouble.

"Very nice," said Sheppard, stepping into the pause.

He gave the military man a disgusted look. 'Very nice?' Could the man be any more banal? Sheppard looked slightly abashed when Teyla glanced at him, but she seemed amused and he shrugged uncomfortably.

"You look hot." Ronon supplied, grinning broadly.

Rodney pointed a finger at Ronon. "What he said. Except, when I say 'hot', I don't mean--"

She laughed and stepped up to plant a kiss on his cheek, light as a caress, and just as itchy along Rodney's spine. "Thank you, Rodney."

Sheppard, Rodney was pleased to note, had a sulky look on his face when Teyla stepped back. Hah! Take that, Kirk!

"Why's he get a kiss and we don't?"

Teyla regarded Ronon with a serenity that masked mischief. "Because he is Rodney." When Ronon made a feinting move towards her, she dropped into a defensive crouch. The fluid material swirled around her legs and hips, and Rodney watched it flow, mesmerised.

"Children," Sheppard said warningly after a moment. "Behave."

Ronon grinned and straightened up, then made a playful feint towards Sheppard. As the other man dodged, Rodney sidled back over to Teyla. "Are they going to be like this all night?"

Her smile flashed briefly, reddish brown beneath the swirl of her hair. "Quite possibly. Ronon!"

Rodney yelped once as Ronon changed direction mid-dodge, sweeping him and Teyla into a bear hug. "Get off me, you big--! Gnggh!"

Teyla was laughing. Rodney reflected that it was all very well for her - he had Ronon's beard smushed against his temple. Why did this Pegasus native have no concept of personal space? Okay, so Rodney didn't exactly mind as long as this wasn't going to be regular occurrence. Of course, Rodney had Teyla pressed up against him now, so it wasn't such a terrible thing.

"Cute," Sheppard noted. "You know, much as I'd love to join you, we're going to be la-- Oh, God." Sheppard joined the smush, hauled in by Ronon's long arm. "Okay, okay..."

"Now that you have that from your system," Teyla said, her breath warm against Rodney's cheek - again - as she spoke, "Perhaps we may leave?"

"Yep."

Teyla smoothed the dress down as they separated - the shade of red looked really good on her - and they all found somewhere else to look as she glanced up. "Are we leaving?"

"We're leaving," Sheppard said and offered her his arm. She took it with a smile for his unexpected gallantry, and followed him out.

"Oh, don't even think about it," Rodney told Ronon just as his team-mate lifted his arm in the same offer to him. "You're not going to get that lucky."

Teyla's low laugh rippled with the flutter of the dress as they went out into the night.
