Dear Everywoman Author,
Thank you so much for writing for me - I hope that you'll take this letter as non-proscriptive suggestions - indications of what I wouldn't mind receiving, but not the only things that I'd like to get!
Marvel Cinematic Universe:
Maria Hill
group: Maria Hill & Wanda Maximoff
group: Maria Hill & Pepper Potts
Maria Hill is my favourite character in the MCU; so very capable, so very underrated by directors, screenwriters, and fans alike. Yet she’s Fury’s right hand, friends with the Avengers – she infiltrated HYDRA to get Captain America, the Black Widow, and the Falcon out – this is not a woman that you will see coming.
I would like to see her friendship with Pepper – two women who’ve become extremely powerful in their own right, irrespective of the men they’re presumed to ‘second’, and doubtless enduring a great deal of sexism and misogyny along the way. Show me how they interact, the droll sense of humour, their skills at problem-solving, their exasperation when things go bad – and then the guys make it worse. If you’d like to write the “Where Pepper and Maria were in Civil War, then by all means, go for it!”
I’d like to see Maria’s friendship with Wanda – how far trust goes when one person is Maria Hill and the other is a telepath. Do they have a sort of mentor-like relationship? Maria is practical and pragmatic, and I think that Wanda would appreciate that – as well as Maria’s directness.
I don’t ship Maria with either of these women – just friendship will do, please.
If you have your own ideas about these relationships, I’d enjoy reading those instead – so long as Maria is characterised as a heroine (as she is in the MCU) and not a villain (as she’s frequently apostrophised in the comics).
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D (TV):
Maria Hill
group: Maria Hill & Melinda May & Melinda May’s mother
group: Maria Hill & Akela Amador
Maria Hill is my favourite guest in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and I love the little hints and tips that we have of Maria and her interaction with the elements of S.H.I.E.L.D – and beyond.
Why is Melinda May’s mother so fond of Maria? And with Maria in Operations Logistics, and Akela in Operations Execution, surely their paths would have crossed in some way. If you want to write how Maria and these women met, how the gelled, their relationship through the times, then go for it.
I don’t ship Maria with any of these women – just friendship will do, please.
Again, please characterise Maria as a heroine, not a villain.
Sanctuary
Any Character
So, what I love about Sanctuary is largely the addition of Kate Freelander into the mix – her open sass compared to Helen’s buttoned-down drollness, the way she just saunters into a situation and plays it by ear. I enjoyed the way that Helen and Kate both seemed to understand each other so well – their moral grey lines and the things they’ve done that they’re not proud of, but which they’ll keep doing anyway. I’d love to read about the process of them carefully working out where they can and can’t tread, and how to deal with each other.
If you want to write an AU where Ashley lives, then I’d love to read that, too!
