[Not for the [livejournal.com profile] sga_newsletter, first thoughts only.]

My reaction is probably also a spoiler, so I'm going to cut this.

Does anyone else have the feeling that TPTB hand-crafted this episode purely to piss most of the fandom off?

-wince-

I'm going to stick my neck out here and say that, if they had to do it, I thought they did it well. I know! -backs up defensively- It doesn't do much for my personal version of what-the-show-should-be-like, but I knew they'd never write that version (it contains far too much fanon and porn, wicked grin). In many ways I thought it was a good episode, very season three with lots of emphasis on characters. Not the characters that exist in my personal happy place, but I didn't they really deviated that much from canon.

... now I'm going to wait for the reaction (prepares self) and curl myself to sleep with fan fic, beautiful fan fic.

I haven't seen the ep yet, but a friend did a blow-by-blow, and it honestly sounds like TPTB took a list of 'common conceptions about the show' and decided they'd turn them into 'misconceptions' - and do it explicitly rather than implicitly.

I don't know ... this is going to be a touchy ep with people (have been trawling the fanon, and its clear opinions are leaning every which way), and I'd say its a definate 'see for youself and decide' kind of ep. Lots of things I loved, quite a few I didn't, and many scenes I'm going to want converted into fan fics (McShep being my OTP of choice ;) It's definately not cut and dry, and is at least getting people talking. That's what the writers want out of a character death ep, it seems, and they'll definately get it.

When don't they?

I don't think they did it on purpose...but I do hate it when they use a shoe-horn for character development (Weir) or take out characters I would like to watch do something meaningful (Teyla) and then replace it with two people fighting in training scenarios like we see ALL THE TIME anyway (John and Ronon).

I thought this ep was both well and badly written. It was kind of strange. I mean, the overarching theme and the overlaps and stuff were well done, and Rodney's character stuff tracked with what we've seen so far this season, but the Weir parts were just SO BAD and the John and Ronon parts were just so pointless and...why couldn't the bomb squad have come in and wrapped Carson and the nurse in protective gear?

They'll never top "Heroes" and "Heroes" was also, unfortunatly, a doctor, so they couldn't even give Weir a decent speech because the good one was already taken. And then the ending just destroyed any chance I had at taking this episode seriously. I think I could have handled either a hallucination or Rodney saying that Carson was his best friend...but not both.

*soldiers on, knowing that fandom, at least, writes good Teyla*

You mean pissing off most of the fandom by killing Carson or how exactly Carson died? Because I think the Exploding Tumor of Death is one of the stupidest ways to kill off a character ever. Not to mention I thought Carson was being overly heroic locking everyone out (who could have been ready to put up a bomb shield when he was finished or something) and hand-carrying the tumor himself (he couldn't have moved himself and the patient instead?). The circumstances leading to his death just felt off.

Exactly what I was thinking. Exploding...tumors? The ep was great, but that has got to be the worst plot device I've ever seen.

I still give the winning entry to the FLAMING helicopter of DOOM on ER. Dr. Romano accidentally got his arm chopped off by a helicopter blade in one season and in a later one accidentally gets pancaked by a crashing, burning helicopter. Seriously. Worst. Death. Ever.

I vote for: Funniest. And. WTF-worthiest. Death. Ever. :)

Well, I have seen some fans upset about ship in this ep - specifically a lack of their ship of choice or an irritation at the possibility of another ship. Not quite sure what to think of Teyla's secret (Carson? Shep? OC?) or Shep's reaction to Ronon's Q about Teyla. Everything was so vague, which can be both a good and a bad thing.

While I am most certainly not pissed about Elizabeth/Mike or Rodney/Katie, I did find the former a bit irritating due to Mike's damn persistence and the latter sweet yet somewhat dull. But hey, that's what fanfic is for. :)

Hmmm, I don't think so. I think they have seen a lot of fandom and possibly a lot of the worst of fandom and they wanted to clear some things up and ended up doing so in a very screwed way. Like Beckett and Mckay actually being close friends and John's past and things.

I liked 75% of the episode, found the rest boring (Ronon/John-fiht scene) or WTF-ery (the ending, Carson's heroics) and the Biology of 'genetically programmed radiation particles' made me want to break my monitor...

A bit more Teyla, for example. Or Radek :)
