Bugger. I need to rewatch the prequel trilogy for canon research purposes. I barely remember Ep2, and I wandered in and out of Ep3, so...yeah, it's going to be a slog to actually pay attention.

Also, why don't I yet have any Star Wars icons, dammit?

Funny story: I havea quilting group I attend a couple of weekends a month, and there's a woman at them who is seriously focused on doing things the right way. I am a "does it work? y/y? Then it's all good!" kind of person, while she is a "but am I doing it the right and proper way?"

At Saturday's group, it was mentioned that she was going to see Episode VII, and someone talked about doing a rewatch of the old one.

One of the women at the group said (in her typical, I-am-absolutely-certain-of-this way) "the order to watch them in is 4, 5, then 1, 2, and 3, and then Episode 6, that way you get to the end of the revelation, and flashback to Anakin Skywalker's history in 1-3, before continuing to Episode 6. And then you can watch Episode VII."

Needless to say, the lady who Likes To Do It Right was very anxious that she'd been watching it 'the wrong way'. I tried to reassure her, but she was quite intent on writing down the 'proper order'.

I'm good friends with the Absolutely Certain woman, and I love her very dearly. But man, sometimes I think that there's no halfway with her.

This has taken me a week to write: I went and saw it last Sunday and haven't been able to quite get this done amidst the madness of Yuletide and trying to harry along two secret santas.

tl;dr: I avoided all spoilers - trailers, articles, just about anything I could get away with in this time of casual spoilers. And I enjoyed the result.

It's not as good as the originals. It wasn't as compelling a story, and the movie had JJ's fingerprints all over it - not necessarily in the good way; but it's an acceptable copy for moving forward.

the long version: themes, plots, characters )

I think that my problem with this watching was that it was the first time, and I was so busy following it all that I couldn't absorb it. People have said they got more from the second watching.

I'm going back to see it on Wednesday with [livejournal.com profile] acusa_dora and her family at the Sydney IMAX. Should be good now I don't have to be following what's happening and can just enjoy.

Overall? A good start. Not fantastic; I couldn't get caught up in the story, but enjoyable nevertheless, and people who are less critical than I will probably enjoy it more.
