Oof. Another year, another yule.
Thanks for writing for me, dear Yulegoat!
My AO3 is
tielan.
I'm glad that we've been matched, because clearly you have excellent taste in small fandoms and characters!
Likes:
- female friendships and working relationships (think Misses Clause)
- respectful romantic relationships
- characters showing intimacy/friendship in ways appropriate to them
- slices of life
Do Not Want:
- nominated/major character death
- nominated characters as antagonists
- pairings I didn't ask for
notes:
1. If I haven't talked as much about some fandoms or some characters as others, it's not that I don't want them, it's just that my ideas of what I want are less defined. That said, write as my ideas take you or run with your own.
2. If my request as written here doesn't match with what I've requested in the AO3 sign-up, I apologise for the confusion. Please take the mismatch in good faith and check with the mods.
fandom: Dragon Prince Trilogy - Melanie Rawn
characters: Aldiara, Rohannon, Sionell, Pol
Must feature all characters OR may use exceptions specified
things I like about this canon: The worldbuilding, the intricacies of relationships, the way that the relationships underpinned the action and what was going on but that the story didn't start/end with the relationships between characters. That said, what intrigues me in this world is the connections and dynamics between types. That is, Pol as High Prince with Sionell as his Regent in Cunaxa, and the mother of at least two of his athrim - their relationship isn't just about them but about who they are as political figures, as people in the same friendship circles, as old friends (of a sort). The same goes for Aldiara and Rohannon - Aldiara as a very public and known diarmadhi after generations of them hiding, and Rohannon as one of the closest male relatives of the High Prince, an athrim in his own right, and a faradhi 'princeling'. The multitude and complexity of the dynamics was something I really appreciated, along with the full range of life and emotions that the characters went through while going through the plot of the book in question.
ideas: My pairings are Pol/Sionell and Aldiara/Rohannon, and if you can write them, great! If you can't, then just gen is fine - as I specified above, I like the friendship/relationship dynamics.
Something about Sionell and Pol two of them dealing with each other (as a couple or not) after the Vellanti war. Sionell's children being faradhi and Pol's children being diarmadhi and Sionell dealing with gifted children (particularly Meig, and then with Jihan as the now-Princess of Cunaxa), while Pol deals with having gifted athr'im.
For Rohannon and Aldiara, I want to see how they grow up, develop their relationship - whether romantic or platonic - and what they go through in the post-Vellanti war Princedoms, particularly as a diarmadhi of power and a faradhi princeling.
fandom: The Elenium
characters: Danae, Talen, Aslade, Melidere
Must feature all characters OR may use exceptions specified
What I love about this canon: Eddings is very sterotypical fantasy; his characters are archetypes, and he doesn't do women well at all (lots of slightly weary tropes). But I have a fondness for him seeing as I started reading him as a teen in the 90s and it was both fantasy and humourous - sometimes blackly so, sometimes comedically so. I have a great fondness for Talen and Danae/Aphrael - 'mischeivous thief' characters are always fun to read, and their connections all through the world of the Elenium.
ideas: I'm always up for Danae/Talen, or for Danae growing up and the "child goddess of Styricum" suddenly having to deal with being an adolescent replete with hormones and all. Aslade is a background character, but what a force of nature she must be in her community! And Melidere would surely have a great deal to say about the politics of the Elenian court.
fandom: Exiles - Melanie Rawn
characters: Cailet, Sarra, Collan
Must feature all characters OR may use exceptions specified
What I love about this canon: The worldbuilding again. (Look, Rawn does excellent worldbuilding; I just need her to finish The Captal's Tower which is looking likely to be the 12th of Never.) The dynamics of the relationships - power and family and familiarity all wrapped up together. I like that Rawn's stories feature families who like each other, even when they're angry or frustrated with each other. I like her characters being complicated and messy and uncertain of what they do and how they're supposed to keep going.
ideas: post-Mageborn Traitor fic about the Mage Guardians in the Waste. How do Sarra and Cailet get along with the world now run by the Malerrisi? What kind of a revolution are they planning this time? What about moments between Sarra and Collan - family life, or those times when Collan comes home from his work with the 'Minstrelsy' and they get to spend time together, alone, with none of Sarra's council responsibilities intruding (hah)! Cailet and her power, other students who come and go in the aftermath of MT.
And if you want to write your version of "The Captals Tower", allow me to encourage you in any way, shape or form!
fandom: Tales of the 500 Kingdoms
characters: Worldbuilding
Must feature all characters
What I love about this canon: I love the idea of The Tradition, pushing people into fairy stories, will they, nil they. I love the possibilities of stories averted, subverted, inverted, and characters working for their happy ending (and getting it, obviously). My lingering favourite is probably still Godmother Elena (and Champion Alexander) because we get the broad view of how the Godmothers (and other magic-users) of the Kingdoms keep things rolling along. That said, Katya the Sea King's daughter (in Fortune's Fool) is a very close second.
ideas: "Hear this tale of the Kingdoms, for it is an old one and I know it well..." I would adore your version of a 'Tale of the 500 Kingdoms'. I'd prefer if the main character(s) were female, and it would be lovely to see a non-western mythology showcased.
fandom: Psy-Changeling
characters: Alice Eldridge
Must feature all characters
What I love about this canon: The worldbuilding, the peoplebuilding, the energy of the Changelings and the discipline of the Psy (well, some of them), and how people and places keep getting stitched in and stitched in and stitched in at all kinds of points through the narrative. From Alice's book helping
ideas: Alice is such an intriguing character: put in cryostasis before Silence was taken on by the Psy council, waking up just as it falls. What things echo to her from the time Before when she wakes up in the "present day" of the series? What about a piece of her life before Silence - who was George? What was Zaid Adelaja to her? I'd really like to see the process of her coming to terms with the post-Silence world, swiss-cheese-memory and all.
In the end, these are all just ideas. If they work for you, great! If not, find a story that resonates with you.
And thanks for writing for me this Yuletide!
