Not to mention, the conceptualisation of Thona's 'found family' vs Basilea's strained relationship with her adult children was neat to explore.

Yuletide 2024. One of the gaps in the Pern series is exactly how mores actually shifted from the sexual monogamy of the original settlers to the more fluid sexualities of the weyr. I mean, that's typical of McCaffrey (and many other writers), who settled all her main characters into monogamous relationships even within the less rigid sexual mores of the weyr, but I digress. I wanted to explore how that actually came about, and the choices that the characters in Dragonsdawn made, why they made them, and how.

Filling in the background of canons is always enjoyable, but I find it particularly satisfying in Pacific Rim. Whatever mess the canon became at the end, the core of the idea - found family, found connection, all in this together - was a theme that we desperately needed, but which clearly we weren't willing to learn from. As someone whose blood family is solid, I still very much enjoy the exploration of found families and how their dynamics could work.

Too often, I feel like media wants to "uncomplicate" things by refusing to have a 'second love' story - like the One True Love motto absolutely must hold. And then fandom wants to "uncomplicate" things by simply adding more people to a throuple or quadruple or polyam. I really wish there was more consideration and development of 'second love' - that you can completely love someone for who they are to you at one point in live, but also completely love someone else for who they are to you at another point in time. All types of media - both professionally produced and fannish - tend to be bad at this.
Anyway, this was my study of what life on Earth is like for the remnant of the 12 Colonies.

I have no idea why I posted this. I found it in one of my folders of old fic (I have plenty of them), and thought someone might like it. Which...I suppose? It's a complex and intricate story of the action-adventure kind that used to be pretty common over in SG1 and even Atlantis fandom back in the mid-00s. I melded a number of scenarios together to produce this one, and it's a bit of a welter of everything, to be honest. Also, the plot got seriously epic. As a lot of my plots tend to do.

And working out the different styles of writing for each sibling that Edmund wrote to, and how much he revealed, and what went unsaid in each letter was also very enjoyable.

This is kind of a prequel to Paved With Good Intentions which is a soulmark AU, only the soulmarks are between people who've already ended up with other people. It's bittersweet, in part because Steve hasn't dealt with his history, and put his behind in his past. Not yet, anyway. That's what happens in 'Paved with Good Intentions' - the long and finished version which is not looking very likely right now.
You'd have to read the prequel, and it might give you a better feel for how that world works, the kinds of themes I enjoy writing about and investigating, and how they work out in my stories.

Yuletide 2024. One of the gaps in the Pern series is exactly how mores actually shifted from the sexual monogamy of the original settlers to the more fluid sexualities of the weyr. I mean, that's typical of McCaffrey (and many other writers), who settled all her main characters into monogamous relationships even within the less rigid sexual mores of the weyr, but I digress. I wanted to explore how that actually came about, and the choices that the characters in Dragonsdawn made, why they made them, and how.

Filling in the background of canons is always enjoyable, but I find it particularly satisfying in Pacific Rim. Whatever mess the canon became at the end, the core of the idea - found family, found connection, all in this together - was a theme that we desperately needed, but which clearly we weren't willing to learn from. As someone whose blood family is solid, I still very much enjoy the exploration of found families and how their dynamics could work.

Too often, I feel like media wants to "uncomplicate" things by refusing to have a 'second love' story - like the One True Love motto absolutely must hold. And then fandom wants to "uncomplicate" things by simply adding more people to a throuple or quadruple or polyam. I really wish there was more consideration and development of 'second love' - that you can completely love someone for who they are to you at one point in live, but also completely love someone else for who they are to you at another point in time. All types of media - both professionally produced and fannish - tend to be bad at this.
Anyway, this was my study of what life on Earth is like for the remnant of the 12 Colonies.

I have no idea why I posted this. I found it in one of my folders of old fic (I have plenty of them), and thought someone might like it. Which...I suppose? It's a complex and intricate story of the action-adventure kind that used to be pretty common over in SG1 and even Atlantis fandom back in the mid-00s. I melded a number of scenarios together to produce this one, and it's a bit of a welter of everything, to be honest. Also, the plot got seriously epic. As a lot of my plots tend to do.

Another canon where there's so much backstory to fill in. A decade and change of ruling Narnia, and what that would have meant in the early years when the Pevensies still looked like children but had to act with the authority of those who were much older. And working out the different styles of writing for each sibling that Edmund wrote to, and how much he revealed, and what went unsaid in each letter was also very enjoyable.

This is kind of a prequel to Paved With Good Intentions which is a soulmark AU, only the soulmarks are between people who've already ended up with other people. It's bittersweet, in part because Steve hasn't dealt with his history, and put his behind in his past. Not yet, anyway. That's what happens in 'Paved with Good Intentions' - the long and finished version which is not looking very likely right now.
You'd have to read the prequel, and it might give you a better feel for how that world works, the kinds of themes I enjoy writing about and investigating, and how they work out in my stories.

So looking through the stories, there's a really broad variety of themes and characters, quite a lot of fandoms, but also some recurring concepts: "found family", "true love isn't just the once and never again", "working through the complexities of a situation when you don't have a guidebook", and so forth.
