There was a bit of a blow-up in SPN and a bundle of race meta sparked by a Life on Mars story and capped by a discussion of tone.

Oh, it's actually the other way around. After Malleus Malefactorum there was a ton of meta about how this season (and that ep in particular) has become progressively more misogynist.

Well, this could be to do with the people I friend and places I hang out. If you'd like to see some of it, check out feminist_fandom a week or so back - but mostly I followed discussion across personal LJs.

Oh, and This Post (http://deadbeat-nymph.livejournal.com/15619.html?format=light), linked on metafandom, did a really nice job of going through the history and cultural context that made that ep just so infuriating. I'd been upset about Supernatural's underlying ideology since the show's beginning, but suddenly that ep made things blatant in a way that a lot of people couldn't ignore anymore.

Well, since I'm neither in SPN fandom, nor Life On Mars, neither really have reached me. :)

China really is amazing - the countryside and cultural history, the way they resisted (or didn't) European colonialization.... There's so much of it, and it's such a contrast of culture. It's really quite mindblowing to realise that the cultures are so different on one hand, but when the Chinese immigrate to Western countries, they do amazingly well...

Yeah, no Torri in S5. I understand why she told them to fuck off, but I'm still 11 kinds of sad.

Okay, maybe this is me not reading enough into the interview, but all I heard said was that, after some consideration, Torri decided not to reprise her role of Elizabeth in S5.

I can think of a lot of reasons as to why she wouldn't reprise it. Not all of them have to do with TPTB and any dissatisfaction with them.

But then, maybe I just want to believe that Torri isn't going the way Michael Shanks did in S6 of SG1. Shanks said some...rather unclassy things about his treatment by TPTB. Whether or not they were true, he whipped his fans into a froth and frenzy of How Nasty Those PTB Are To Write Michael Out!

Disappointed, I get; Giving them the finger and telling the world she did so, I don't.

Torri seemed like a classy lady the one time I met her. I'd hate to have to revise that opinion.

Oh no, Torri is a class act all the way! That was my phrasing, not a reflection of anything she's done or said. I just meant that, whatever her reasons (and I'm sure there are several) for not doing S5, I can totally understand why she might not hesitate to leave TPTB in a bit of a lurch (they'd already been talking about their plans for her in S5 before she bailed). She was Done Wrong by them (although I've never heard her talk about that herself, just from other sources).

Right now, it's suffering the "worst winter in 50 years" (which China was also suffering) only their 'worst winter' is down to, oh, about 5 degrees C - apparently it's usually only about 10C at the coldest.

But, yeah, HK is growing on me as a city. I don't know that I'd like to live here, but all in all, compared with some cities I've visited in my travels, I'd rather live/work here than quite a few other places!

Heh. I lived there in 2000 from August - December. The weather was very nice.

I didn't love in the city - I was on the Kowloon side, near Sai Kung, at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. I really loved living out there. We were about 40 minutes from central Hong Kong.

I would love to live overseas, but getting Andy to go to Canada is hard enough! He's not a traveler.
