brief comments on five shows

Sci-fi meeting day: watched random episodes that I hadn't seen before, caught up with friends, and generally had a pretty good time.

Eureka 4.02 - (sequel to Founder's Day)

They what with the who where in the when?? I liked Jo/Zane! *wails* And they don't switch it back at all? Mind you, I missed exactly what happened in Founder's Day so I only have half a clue as to what's going on.

Still...intriguing. Very much so. And...a little scary. Jack and Tess really move in together?

Warehouse 13 - (the one where Kaylee and Simon set up a bakery in Detroit)

So, Warehouse 13 didn't exactly hit me the first time I watched it, and this episode didn't really do me any favours either. I keep thinking that the male lead is the guy from CSI (original) - Nick whatshisname. Except he turns out to be Bones' ex-boyfriend who sailed off to Miami back in Season 2.

I do wonder a bit if Warehouse 13 isn't trading off its guest stars more than its main cast. I mean, I know a bunch of Stargate folks tuned in for "the episode with Joe Flanigan", and I bet the browncoats tuned in for "the episode where Simon and Kaylee open a bakery in Detroit". But, really, superpowered underpants?

*sigh*

Not terribly impressed by it. Something to watch if it happens to be on. Which it never is, at least in my household.

Nikita (pilot ep)

I don't know. I'm kinda conflicted on this. Non-white female as the main character, interesting 'bringing down the house' scenario... But...it's fairly predictable. That's the downside. And the 'bad' guys didn't need all that much convincing to turn. (ie. Birkoff, Michael) One of the things I enjoyed most about The Bourne Ultimatum (the movie one with Matt Damon) was the way he convinced Pam around to his POV. Or she became persuaded he wasn't as dangerous as the others had painted him to be. There was real tension there - of course Jason Bourne would get out of it - but would he convince her that he wasn't the evil bastard or not?

I want that. I want psychological warfare, or something that I don't know how they're going to get to the end. And characters that really kick you in the guts.

Lost Girl (pilot ep)

Horribly terribly dreadfully predictable. Entertaining in a "if there's absolutely nothing else to watch and I can't be bothered to change the channel" way. Otherwise...um...serious holes in some of the practicalities. Like how a merely human girl could get into the glass factory full of supernatural fae without ever betraying herself?

Um. Yeah. Nope.

And the fifth show: Leverage, Season 2. Went through 6 eps of S2 with a friend, and we're going to meet up to get the rest of S2 in the bag in a fortnight's time. That's pretty much the only way I'll get around to watching something anymore - being forced to do it by having someone else there, watching alongside me.

So, to give Jeri Ryan due honour, she's a damned good actress, as it turns out. Then again, David Boreanaz was wince-worthy when he first showed up in Buffy, and look at him now! At any rate, a very neat write-out of Sophie and a rather neat write-in of Tara. When she was first introduced, I was thinking "but she's not the replacement Sophie! The name's not right..."

I rather like her. She's not Sophie, of course. And I love that they kept Sophie in there, even when Gina couldn't be there.

The cons are still a little too slickly executed, but the interactions are hilarious as always.

It feels a little strange, actually. I haven't been keeping up with any of the shows I'm actually interested in: NCIS, Merlin, Rizzoli and Isles, Dr. Who. I just...can't. But I can force myself to sit down and watch something if there are others forcing me to sit down and watch it.

As for Lost Girl, all I can say is-- it gets a little better? A bit? Plus, she didn't get in without detection. I am choosing to believe the Trick kept her from being noticed until she drew attention to herself because it was the only way he could affect the trial without directly involving himself.

LOL. I feel really critical of an awful lot of shows. It's really hard for me to let go of my innate skepticism in heaps of shows - it's what sticks me when watching shows like Leverage where the hard-nosed cynic in me won't quite let me believe that everything ends up quite as rosy as the story premise behaves.

So, yeah, I find it tricksy to switch off my inner critic for far too many shows. There are rare exceptions - BSG was one, Dexter was another. I don't exactly know why those two and not others: maybe because the characters overwhelmed the 'intersection with reality' (well, such 'intersection with reality' as BSG had).

I don't feel like it's my kind of show. And the 'choosing neither' was, well, obvious from the get-go.

Just so you know, Eureka eventually works out a lot of stuff. I am particularly pleased with the season so far (they have a full 22 ep pick up) and there will be a holiday episode. Definitely go back and watch Founder's Day because it sets up everything.

The Trick being the gnome man who confronts the two leaders as they walk out?

Yes. The guy who runs the bar and shares possibly prophecy conversation with Dyson.

I haven't watched Eureka since, I think, Allison told Carter she was pregnant with Nathan's child. It's been that long.

I need to catch up on Eureka - it was pretty light watching at first, enjoyable with a few twists... I don't know. Maybe I'm just feeling burned out on TV shows...

See, that bit was kind of interesting. In a "if they do this prophecy bit with a twist, perhaps" way.

But I'm horrendously picky about my shows these days. They've gotta grab me by the gut to really get my attention and hold it.

I am so hungry for genre shows in which women value other women that my critical faculties are overwhelmed.

Mind you, as someone who grew up enjoying the cheesiest of SF tv, I expect I didn't have much in the way of critical faculty to begin with.
