Simple version: I enjoyed that quite a lot.
No, the movie was nothing new in the plot or themes, although the giant mecha was kind of fun and a little bit Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Yes, it was kind of predictable in parts, and my brain kept on interrupting with "now this is the Get Back On The Horse sequence and this is Hector In His Tent and this is the They Can Do It and this is the Rousing Speech and this is the Insight Into The Enemy and this is the Heroic Sacrifice..."
I was disappointed in the white maleness of the character list. Yes, I know, Rinko Kikuchi and Idris Elba, BUT STILL. There were seven other characters who could be considered to have significant parts, and they were all male and six of them were Whitey McWhiterson.
Overall, however, it was good. I love that Mako Mori was sold as a character in her own right (even if she didn't chew screentime), and that there wasn't a kiss between her and Raleigh at the end.
I'm a sucker for a good sci-fi/fantasy with action/adventure, and with a really good score, I'm sold! (Even when I know the score is being emotionally manipulative. Why yes, movie, I see what you are doing to me with those swelling crescendos, don't think that I don't!)
If I could turn my mind off long enough to just watch, I'd have enjoyed it a lot more. As it is, the seams are visible in the plot, but only because I can't turn off my brain and stop looking for them.
Ironically, and in a display of why I always end up being in teeny-tiny corners of fandoms, my brain is not promptly suggesting how well all my OTPs would 'drift' together (because, honestly, I truly don't think most of them would), but trying to write the first pilot pairing to successfully drift (fraternal, female twins).
I am now going through and watching the featurettes on YouTube. :)
