Hello, Operator, Please Give Me Number Nine - Calvin & Hobbes - Susie Derkins
Susie plays Calvinball with Death.
All the insanity and hilarity of Calvinball, in a game of life or Death that should probably be serious (given that this is Susie Derkins) but kind of isn't.
Getting To Know You - Hobbes and Bacon (cartoon), Despicable Me (movies) - Bacon, Edith.
Two unusual girls end up sharing a dorm room at college.
Bacon is Calvin & Susie's daughter, and the whole story is written as a series of letters/emails between the girls and their parents. It's delightful and hilarious.
Inexplicably And Without Method - Stranger Than Fiction - Jules, Karen
Jules asks Karen to lecture to one of his classes. This is that story. Sort of.
I've never watched this film, and yet it works so very well - I love Karen's thoughts and the way she approaches Jules and life and their relationship and, oh, everything. It's a good picture of someone who's a little OCD and intensely introverted developing a relationship with someone who is willing to meet them on ground they can both stand on. (At least, that's how I read it.)
This Is No Broken Heart - Agents of SHIELD - Skye, Melinda May, Grant Ward
Five steps along the way to becoming a team.
An emotional journey story about family and trust and Skye dealing with herself and working herself out. I liked the way it showed the slow and gradual reclaiming of trust between Skye and Grant.
Bring Your Boy Home - The Secret Garden (Frances Burnett) - Mary, Colin, Dickon
Dickon returns from World War I.
This brief little story manages to retain the friendship that the three hold into adulthood, without relinquishing the seriousness of the time and place.
Re-Designation - WALL-E - EVE, WALL-E
WALL-E is still one of a kind. That hasn't changed. Of new work, new names, and a few first faltering steps back on Earth.
EVE contemplates designations, they discover another robot like WALL-E, and this story is ADORBSABLE.
How Life Does Turn Out - While You Were Sleeping - Lucy, Jack, the family
Life doesn't always turn out the way you plan.... Sometimes, it's better.
A nice little epilogue to the movie. I like the sound of everyone n this
happy heart happy home - Psy-Changeling (Nalini Singh) - Sascha, Nikita, Lucas, Naya
A special moment with Naya causes Sascha to reach out to her own mother.
I think what hits me most about this fic is that Sascha comes to the realisation that Nikita is incapable of responding to her the way Sascha would like her to. That the Protocol and Silence that didn't fit Sascha is deeply ingrained in Nikita, and trying to demand the emotional reaction is never going to work with Nikita and will only hurt Sascha. This is something I feel that most stories about the Nikita-Sascha relationship don't really get.
title - Psy-Changeling (Nalini Singh) - Sienna/Hawke
There are moments when she feels as if she is crawling out of her skin, out of her mind, out of the minefield that is her whole self.
I liked the look at Sienna as who she must be without the mating bond - in many ways, still solitary, even if she's no longer alone or distant.
The Call Of Calypso - Galaxy Quest - Gwen DeMarco, Jason Nesbit
In this episode, Lt. Madison and the Protector women must take charge of the ship from incapacitated male senior officers and rescue Commander Taggart and his landing party held on an alien world. At least, that's what the script says...
A day in the life of an actor. For great hilarity.
Glory In The Highest - The Church Mice series (Graham Oakley)
A little Sunday afternoon television inspires Humphrey and Arthur's latest plan: to invite Songs of Praise to film in Wortlethorp. Unfortunately several obstacles present themselves, including a somnolent cat, a disinterested crowd, and a lack of spelling ability.
I had no idea there was Church Mice fic in Yuletide, but now I know there is, I may have to ask for this next year! XD Even if you haven't read this series, it's utterly hilarious and delightful and gives you a very accurate idea of how the stories go. The art of the books is really beautiful and detailed (or, at least, the art of the book that my family has of it is really beautiful and detailed) but since this is fic, you'll just have to imagine the faces of everyone (including Samson the cat).
Four Things Not Adequately Covers In Mulan's R.A. Training - Disney Princesses - Mulan, Aurora, Snow White, Ariel, Tiana, Rapunzel, Belle, Merida, Cinderella, Jasmine
Mulan is a Resident Assistant on a dormitory floor at a college. Gosh, some of the students on her floor come from really screwed-up families.
Okay, imagine all the Disney Princesses at college. Now, imagine their families and their familial dysfunctions. Now, imagine Mulan is the R.A. at the Disney Princess dorm, dealing with the families of the girls under her care... It's accurate and terrifying and heartwarming and amazing.
Life Important - The Fifth Element - Korben/Leeloo
"Hey," Leeloo says, "can we go get burgers?"
Full of all the contradictions inherent in Leeloo and in Korben's interactions with her. Really good.
