Okay, there was a 'pimp your own fic' day a while back.
I'm tardy. So shoot me.
I've written a lot of fic, if I stop to think about it. The Pit Of Voles says I've authored over 80 stories. Some are long, most are short - several thousand words.
If I had to pick my nine favourites - the ones that I'm proud of for good language, situation, characterisation, and uniqueness of idea - they'd be:
Talismans [team, drama]
The connection between the team - John, Teyla, Ronon, Rodney - is something that I love: you can see the potential there between the four of them, even if the writers haven't done such a great job of really showing it in more than glimpses. I wanted to bring that connection into sharp focus through physical objects.
Carved Up [Ronon, angst]
I like this one for the cruelty, I think. There's a bitterness about it - Ronon back on the run and without a home again. It was written to be bleak, uncompromising, and vicious, taking him all the way to the edge of the knife and leaving him balancing on the point.
Winners And Survivors [Teyla, Cadman, action-adventure]
You just know that Teyla and Cadman were natural allies while Cadman was in Atlantis - the marine's bounce and enthusiasm balacing against Teyla's calm measure, both of them very physically aware of themselves (hello, tapdancing marine!) and of a similar age and intrigued by their differences. If I was going to try for any femmeslash, it would be Teyla/Cadman, I think.
The Travelling Sense Of Home [team, drama]
Apart from wanting to see the team on Earth as a team, I was hoping to convey the idea that John described in Sateda. That his family is around him and home is where they are, even if it's just a road trip out of the SGC. Also, I like Teyla's Wraithgene-heritage as a plot point and what it means in a more practical sense.
Sacrifice [Teyla, Elizabeth, friendship]
I know people don't think of Teyla and Elizabeth as friends, largely because they have few scenes together, and most of them are information exchange, not emotional connection. I wanted to try it without them being girly and giggly, because I can't see them being that way. This was a nice, quiet way to start them off. Maybe I should make a series about the progression of their friendship. Although I gather that there aren't too many people in the Teyla&Elizabeth camp.
Exile And Family [John, Teyla, friendship]
This one takes the idea of John's family and who it includes and kind of reverses that concept. The people he's befriended in Atlantis are his family, but does their concept of family stretch to include him? Since Teyla's the only one with living family in Pegasus, and John's already had some truck with the Athosians, I worked with the idea that her concept of family includes John and her family includes him because of her.
The Twice-Drowned [John, drama]
Body memory. I read a Scott Summers story by
minisinoo years ago, that talked about how Scott has a particular type of memory, or vision - something about shape and placement. I wanted to use something like that in an Atlantis story: the different way people learn and remember - and the idea that John remembers something physical, because he is a man very rooted in the physicality of his being.
Different [Teyla/Zelenka, romance]
Have you ever written a story, then looked back at it and thought, 'Damn, that's good'? I mean, I like my writing. But this one has a special spot in my heart for being an unusual pairing that I think I did damn well.
Man And Wraith [John, Michael, Teyla, drama]
It would have been nice to develop more of a John-Teyla-Michael triangle in the show - more tension in the scenario, especially since John is always watching the screens when Teyla and Michael are talking. Suspicious guy. And, yeah, John's in denial. After the stunt Thalen pulled, most guys would be.
If I think about it, I've definitely written more than 80 fics. Because the Pit doesn't allow NC-17 fic, and I've written a few of those.
