Went and got my root canal yesterday. Interestingly, while the feeling of swelling in the foot hasn't gone down, the hand doesn't feel quite as awful, and the persistent tingling seems to have faded a little.
My jaw aches, though, and the gums feel swollen, which I hear is usual in root canals. I don't remember it from my first time, but I was, what, 23? My body was younger and I was at peak health. Anyway, I don't recall waking up at 4am with a throbbing jaw, but that's why painkillers were invented.
Which makes me wonder just how much there is in what
saramund said on Sunday: that they don't tell you how important dental care is - that they won't perform open heart surgery on you if you have tooth decay.
The things you learn.
The worst part about that tooth? When I came back from my trip, it was fine. I was physically hale, hearty, and perfectly fine. Okay, so I weighed probably 5kg more than I should, but I can deal with that because I don't have thyroid or glandular issues, although I do have PCOS - or I did 17 years ago, and I don't imagine it just one day decides to get up and vanish.
But the dentist I see was concerned about a bit of 'overhang' from a previous filling in which food was getting caught and suggested I get it refilled and the overhang fixed. Which I took, because: medical professional, right? Yeah, I won't be doing that again. 12 years and not a peep of trouble - about 6 of them without actual dental checks - and then I get the filling redone and I end up with a raft of nerve problems and a root canal.
*sigh*
I'm hoping that getting the root canal done means at least some of the nerve issues will settle, and we can settle on things like the headaches (faint, right side only), the swelling of the toe joint in my right foot, and the stiffness of the thumb joint in my right hand, and other things that are happening on the right side only.
I have a nerve conduction text next Tuesday night, I think the neurologist is going to do an MRI of my lower spine and my brain (they did the neck and upper spine already, and noted a slight compression but not enough that nerves should be affected) just to check everything.
On the plus side, I don't apparently have a Chiari Formation, which is what my sister had when she needed an operation 12 years ago for blockage of the spinal fluid. She has issues with sensitivity in her arm to this day.
If I ever get back to my 'standard' for health, I will not take it for granted. Because these last six months have been damned annoying and a bit scary.

On a somewhat related note, my left foot, which has always had issues, decided about a year ago to get worse. The joint on the big toe hurts. Now my thumbs are starting to hurt, too. It's a little weird. I don't know how to proceed. I really should see someone about it. Podiatrist was only helpful to a point. I don't know who to talk to. Also, I'm pretty ridiculously stressed with family life, so that's the iron on the fire right now.
