Writing Exercise: Think of a person, real or imagined. From the following ten things, choose four and in one paragraph each, describe how the person would:

--answer the telephone when a telemarketer calls
--tell a funny story
--dance alone at home
--cry (you pick why)
--argue with a truck driver
--vomit
--flirt with a waiter/waitress
--play with a small child
--eat a lobster
--wake up to have breakfast alone
--prepare to go out for an important dinner

As you write these things, do not name the character's emotional state, i.e., "he is happy," "she is depressed." Try to make me feel the mood by describing the character and his or her situation.

dance alone

It is like the state in which she fights, but with the focus of consciousness upon herself rather than her opponent. She knows the steps of this dance, performed alone or with a partner, but to the forms she adds her own gestures and movements. Fingertips trace out arcs through air, and the swing of her hair is heavy, brushing her shoulders as she spins on the balls of her feet. Her heart measures out every beat as she forgets Atlantis, forgets the Wraith, forgets herself, and gives her spirit over to the dance.

vomit

Like disappointment, the nausea rushes through her belly and her throat, an unstoppable urge. Bitter as loss, with the fouling fetor of putrefaction, it surges out of her, forcing her to bend over so she does not contaminate herself as the retches take her again and again until she is purged. Distantly, she can hear her team-mates calling. Their concern is cooling as the air that traces the pearl of perspiration on her brow and nape. Teyla spits, ridding her tongue of the lingering taste, and wipes first her mouth, then her brow and throat with a tissue cloth. Turning away, she inhales clean air, and goes to reassure her team-mates.

Two more to come tomorrow, 'cos I'm tired right now.

Lovely! So Teyla, the whole dance and the assuring the team. Dance just makes so much sense for her, since her martial arts are effectively a dance. And I totally pictured the second snippet to be after another Wraith mind connection episode. Except that the underlying sense of disappointment suggests something else. *thinks*

wasn't her hair too gorgeous in the most recent episode?

I followed the link on your Teyla essay-ish meta. I really like these! Especially how descriptive it is. I might do this myself for some other characters that I want to write but am intimdated to write. :)
