Okay, so, I'm more gleeful over the casting of Liu Yifei as Mulan than I am about the IW trailer. LIU YIFEI!

Although, let's be honest, the tweet that made me laugh hardest was the one where someone linked to the Hollywood Reporter tweet and declared:

"Scarlett Johansson just fired her agent"

Now, the question is: Will they cast an Asian Shang? Will they shoehorn in a white guy so that the whiteppls don't feel lefts outs? I'm hoping the director is good - another woman, I think: Niki Caro? Oh, let it be like Wonder Woman. Or Ghostbusters. Or Fury Road. I barely get to be picky about my female characters, and I know the chances of this turning out well are like the chances of Maria being significant to the plot in IW: so very very slim...

On the other hand, the sight of Danai Gurira as Okoye walking up the hill flanking T'Challa and/or Steve? GAVE ME GREAT JOY.

Note: I haven't actually watched the IW trailer, I've just seen it promoted everywhere and I AM NOT WATCHING IT UNTIL AT LEAST TOMORROW. I HAVE 6K TO ACHIEVE NANO AND MY PLOTBUNNIES ARE FRAGILE RIGHT NOW.

I am very bad at directors. But *googles* Ooh, I see she has done Whale Rider and is a Kiwi. Definitely promising...

My fingers are crossed for an Asian Shang, as well as her friends in the army. I hope some clueless jerks higher ups don't muck it up. Really hoping for this movie.

I mean, it's set in dang CHINA during a period when there was a little mingling but not much (would have been the occasional diplomat and not much more). Actually, the one thing I could see a white person in as a kind of assistant observer to the Emperor's Scribe, and given all the sneering lines. (Because, honestly, the Scribe should be more professional than that.)

True, but I think misogyny was very rampant, so his behavior wasn't unusual. Offensive and unprofessional, but not unusual. I agree, it would be a good role for a white man. It would fit well.

I also agree that China, as well as Japan, didn't have a lot of mingling with the west during this period. Japan even went so far as to kill any white person who landed in Japan without their express permission.
