For those of you who've been keeping up with the drama: LJ has finally issued a statement.

IMO, it's too little, too late.

This statement - or a placeholder statement - twenty-four hours earlier would have worked wonders to staunch the blood. Now, it's one great mess, and there's no telling if the fandom limb will ever be the same, even after the massive emergency surgery to reattach it.

I'll be sticking around, and my paid account apparently holds through until Feb '08. After that...well, it depends on whether 6A and LJ manage to redeem themselves.

I might even be entirely out of fandom by then. We can hope! :D

Obviously I have totally missed something here.

In a nutshell, an outside group called "Warriors for Innocence" contacted LiveJournal about suspected pedophiles who were using LJ to meet up. The problem commenced when LJ suspended a whole lot of fannish communities and journals for "suspect content" -ahem- without warning or recourse.

The "Warriors for Innocence" are something of a shady lot and even a number of anti-pedophile orgs were pretty annoyed that LJ couldn't tell the difference between the cracktastic ways of some fans and the actual perpatrators. And to make matters even more wanky, some fans actually posted letters they sent to LJ Abuse about actual pedophiles and LJ Abuse waved the free speech flag and said they couldn't do anything about it. I actually found some of those journals, which didn't get purged by the way, and wanted to wash my head out with bleach.

The upshot of all of this is that it took Six Apart/LiveJournal an appalling long (well over a day) time to tell users what was going on and what they were going to do to fix it. Mind you, Six Apart's CEO took time out to make a statement to CNet which, IMO, was really stupid because he hadn't spoken to the folks who were the actual users. Bad, bad customer service all the way around.
