So, um, after three years in Atlantis, as the city's premier ally, being on Sheppard's team for all that time, and occasionally even being left in charge of the city...
Is it possible that maybe, perhaps, Teyla knows some people over at the SGC other than the bigwigs? Is it possible that Teyla might have, perhaps, the faintest clue as to how to go about ordering basic things from Earth - you know, greeting cards, Earth gifts, nail polish (it's extremely useful stuff, you know), and tent tarps? Is it perhaps vaguely suggestible that she would have already learned about Valentine's Day, Independance Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas simply through living in the city with all those people from Earth? That she might not just be able to use a weapon as fluidly as the military men, but that she could probably use a computer as fluently as do you or I?
I mean, we're talking three years, here - one thousand days. An intelligent person can learn a lot in three years. Or is Teyla perhaps exempt from being intelligent, resourceful, or useful since her people aren't on technological par with Western culture Earth?
sjhw_tolerance is wont to say that I'm hanging around with the wrong people at times like these.
Clearly, the broader Stargate Atlantis fandom are "the wrong people" in this situation.

I just...I don't get this fandom. I mean...at ALL.

Yes, I saw that. It tipped the balance over in this rant which has been gently bubbling for a couple of months, now.

I mean, come on. She helped John poke through the computer in Quarantine. John has apparently shown Ronon a bazillion movies, so surely he's shared Earth-y stuff with Teyla, too. And god, the way the Western world is about celebrating holidays? There's no way Teyla and Ronon haven't been exposed to and invited to celebrations for all kinds of holidays.
Edit: OMG not to mention materialism! I won't make sweeping judgements about natives of other countries, but if she made any American friends besides John, oh yeah, she's learned about how to procure gifts via Earth for people, and probably gotten some Earth stuff as gifts too.

The "best team evah" photomanip is just one symptom of the "Teyla is unimportant" thinking in the fandom.
no subject
I want to say yes, that Teyla would know all sorts of other "Western" stuff, by virtue of being surrounded by practitioners thereof for at least 3 years on Atlantis...but then, for pretty much all of those 3 years, she was also the leader of her people (which probably sucked up a lot of spare time)
so, I'm sadly going to have to say maybe to your question - there are only so many hours in the day, and even Teyla needs to sleep eventually.
(though, on the other hand, it doesn't speak ill of Teyla if she's never sought to learn how to do mail-order or nail-polish application...right?)

But holidays, computers, technology, people and processes, major societies and cultures, social customs and individuals from Earth... Teyla and Ronon would have a lot of facility in those skills.

Seriously, I'm having major issues with fandoms lately. The massive lady-hating (all from fandoms with a heavy female majority of fans!) is really insane. It seems no matter where I go (either of the Stargates, Supernatural, Torchwood, Doctor Who, Heroes, Buffy, Veronica Mars, the list is endless), there's a violent hatred of women. They're all stupid, incompetent harpies who aren't good enough to share the screen with the male
woobiesheroes. And forget about relationships! It's All Slash, All The Time because only men can really appreciate the amazing awesomeness of the other men on the show. Now, don't get me wrong, as a bisexual woman I'd love a wider, more nuanced portrayal of sexualities in the media. Y'all, McShep (or worse, Sam/Dean *shudder**gag*) ain't it.*sigh* I just don't know what to do with fandom. That's why I started coming around your LJ all the time after I found it through your fic. I like the stories you write and your take on Atlantis seems very similar to mine. It's nice to go somewhere and not have to worry about seeing "Keller asked Rodney out for a drink! What a slut!" I hope you don't mind me hanging around :)
no subject
I'm right there with you. I really have to wonder why these gals are so obsessed with the boys to the point that all women are suspect. Which always makes me want to ask, "So does that mean you hate yourself? Hmmm?"
Hell, I'd be happy to have more sexualities on display. For me McShep fails if only because I can't see them hanging out as friends in the ways that guys generally do. That's actually my demarcation point.

Out of curiosity, where do you see the violent hatred of women in Dr. Who and Torchwood? I am genuinely curious - not attempting to bash; I'm a fan of both shows and don't really see it.
It's All Slash, All The Time because only men can really appreciate the amazing awesomeness of the other men on the show.
SGA was what got me to read slash. There were multiple reasons for it, one of which is that a lot of the fic written in the fandom is slash, but also, when I first started reading fanfic, I was very into relationship that made sense. For all that I like Teyla a lot - I didn't see her having any type of connection to John or any of the other men in Atlantis. Now that has changed as the seasons go on, and I actually now barely read SGA slash, but to an extent, it made sense to me.
OTOH, I'm not a big fan of Jack and Daniel slash b/c I think Jack treated Daniel horribly on the show and I got tired of the Sam!bashing.

Honestly, it's mostly just Television Without Pity that I go to for those shows, but there are a few LJs that I've been to back in the day where I've seen it too. On TWoP, they keep talking about how stupid and useless Gwen is (and after this week's episode, ZOMG she's going to try to break up the pretty boys! Oh noes!) and when they remember that Tosh exists at all, she's pretty pathetic. With Doctor Who, it's what a stupid chav Rose is and how The Doctor couldn't possibly have loved her or even cared enough to miss her at all once she's gone because she isn't special. To be fair, this is often paired with talk about how superior Martha is, so it's not about hating all ladies, but the way they talk about hating Rose is so sexist, it burns.
But you're right, compared with some of the other fandoms I named (*cough*Supernatural!*cough*), TW and DW are pretty tame and it is possible to find safe places to talk about them. But it's just everything piled together that's pissing me off.
SGA was what got me to read slash.
Actually, I wasn't refering to actual fanfic so much as the giant delusional AU that seems to evolve on any boards or LJs that I go to when discussing an episode. I mean, not just "oh, this thing that happened was so cute and it gives me an idea for a fic!" but more things like "McShep is canon because Shep knows his computer password" and "I don't understand why Rodney is trying to deny his homosexuality and Katie Brown is so stupid and pathetic for thinking they actually have a real relationship" and "I can't believe the writers are wasting all that chemistry between the actors. They should just have Shep and Rodney hook up already." And this is said in all seriousness. And should anything in canon contradict their fanwankage, they fly into a rage at the woman involved and/or the writers.
It's not just that slash relationships are the only ones that matter in fic, it's that they're insisting they're the only ones that matter in canon! And it's not just with SGA. A few weeks ago, I read a big long discussion on LJ about how Jack had been holding onto his love for The Doctor for so long and now that he's met up with him and has resolved that, he can commit himself completely to Ianto. Someone had the nerve to bring up Rose and what about his feeling for her, and was basically ignored except for someone who told her that Jack joked with Martha/teased the Doctor about Rose being blonde, so obviously he doesn't really care about her. And then everyone moved on.
Fandom makes me tired.
no subject
Ah... I don't visit TWOP, mostly b/c I try really hard to stay spoiler free.
The funny thing is, I've seen more flak about Martha than Rose, at least on LJ. Most DW fans I know didn't like Martha and wanted Rose. I think it was pretty obvious that Ten had feelings for Rose. Just as it's pretty obvious Martha has a crush on Ten. Personally, I wish Martha didn't have a crush or if she did, that she didn't get angry when Ten mooned over Rose. I don't want DW to become a show where every companion is in love with the Doctor b/c I find that somewhat in contradiction to the show. But that might just be me.
Also, I've heard more about how the writers treat black women than anything else. (the fact that both Lisa and Beth, two "aliens" they needed to kill were black). I am a bit annoyed that on TW almost all the bad guys killed have been women -> Suzie, Carys (kinda - I know orgasm induced gas), Lisa, Mary, Suzie again, Beth.
I am aware of the Gwen/Jack/Ianto fiasco. I like Gwen more in 2nd season than I did first. I think the writers developed her very unevenly and I'm still not thrilled with her. I do like the Jack/Ianto pairing and not only b/c it is canon. My dislike of Gwen is separate from the whole Jack thing though and honestly? If the writers keep her developing as she has been, I might actually love her at some point. But I really dislike the whole - I'm really, really in love with Rhys but ooo look! Its Owen! Let me shag him! or the whole Jack thing. But no... let me destroy the world for Rhys. I have a difficult time getting a handle on her character, especially since she is supposed to be the face of humanity for the team.
It's not just that slash relationships are the only ones that matter in fic, it's that they're insisting they're the only ones that matter in canon!
This drives me insane. I admit to liking slash as, especially in SGA and TW, a lot of really good fic falls in that category. It probably helps that a lot of this fic in the TW fandom involves Ianto, who, by far, is my favorite character on the show. But I like a nice Ianto/Tosh pairing when I see it. ;)
But yes. I find the assertions that Rodney and John are both secretly gay and belong to each other amusing... most especially since whenever we meet alien women on the show, they almost invariably go for John and he definitely shows interest. In the case of John and Rodney, they were the two characters whose relationship (i.e. friendship) was most consistently developed until really mid-season 3. I also suspect that the writers pay way too much attention to fandom and like teasing those who read every little thing into evidence for TRUE LOVE!
What drives me insane about the Jack/Ianto thing is that there have never been protestations of love... on either side. I mean, yes, I'm pleased that they are dabbling - to quote Ianto. And yes, I like them as a pairing, but if it ends? While I'll be disappointed, especially if Jack ends with Gwen, I won't stop watching. If Jack ends up with Gwen, I will be disappointed b/c it seems to fly in the face of her character - i.e. her purpose on the show to remind TW of their humanity since she has Rhys and an outside life. But I would love to see some more Ianto development outside of his relationship with Jack. I also think that Jack was more interested in finding out if the Doctor could cure him than resolving any love thing. But that's my opinion and not the wankage opinion, from what I gather.
no subject
Yeah, apparently there's a lot of wank on both sides. For some reason, though, I just never seem to find myself on pro-Rose sites! Although, frankly, if they say the same nasty sexist stuff about Martha that others do about Rose, I don't want to find these pro-Rose sites.
Honestly, I found Martha to be a huge disappointment and I'm irritated as hell she's going to be showing up on Torchwood (although, given how different Captain Jack is on that show, maybe it'll improve her). As much as I loved Rose and was totally gutted that she left, I really wanted to like Martha and I was looking forward to meeting her when RTD promised she was going to be something totally new. I was especially excited by the very early lesbian ninja rumors, because that just tickled me for some reason. But she just turned out to be a half-assed rehash of Rose. It was like the writers were running down a check list and it just didn't feel organic or interesting at all to me. I've said elsewhere that I didn't want to compare Martha to Rose and that I wanted such a comparison to be as pointless as comparing Leela to Nyssa, but the way the writers wrote her I had no choice but to compare the two and frankly, Martha failed. And it didn't help that Ten is working my last goddamn nerve, either. I do think Freema did a really good job with a rather thankless role, though.
Gah, I know! I'm so torn about that issue, though. On the one hand, yes the black women are the aliens that need to be eliminated (although, to be fair, they did everything they could for them and it was Beth's choice to sacrifice herself to save the world) and so many bad
guysgals being female in general. Which isn't good. But on the other hand, you can look at it as a strange sort of equality at the same time. I have an MA in Women's Studies (and in my program everything was always about race and class as well as gender) and one thing we talked about is how often people of color are usually cast in roles where the race is the defining aspect of the character or is a part of a stereotype (i.e. - the black drug dealer or the asian massage parlor worker). Here, though, these roles didn't require an actor of color. There's nothing about the role of Cyberwoman or Alien Sleeper Agent that would immediately require they seek out a black woman for the sake of "believability." Likewise, all of the "bad gal" roles could just as easily been written as male. So, I guess what I'm saying is that it can be seen as bad that the black women (and women in general) still have to be bad guys, but at the same time it can also bee seen as good that they get to be bad guys in less race and gender stereotyped ways than elsewhere on TV.
I am aware of the Gwen/Jack/Ianto fiasco.
Oh, Gods, no triangles please! Yeah, I'm not loving that. I liked it better in Doctor Who when they all got over themselves and all three of them loved each other ;)
What drives me insane about the Jack/Ianto thing is that there have never been protestations of love... on either side.
Yeah, I know. Frankly, I just don't get the Jack/Ianto relationship. I don't get any sense of real feeling from either of them. I don't understand how last season it went from Ianto being all "ZOMG, you killed Lisa! I hates you forever and ever and ever!!!one!" to "We can has sex nao: y/y?" I don't understand what they see in each other. I mean, I can see admirable things about each of them, but I'm not getting the sense from the characters that they are seeing (or caring about) those things.
In other news: Teyla still rules! :) On a shallow note, I saw the previews for next week's ep and she looks so pretty! I like her maternity wear.

Given her life prior to meeting the expedition, the capacity to take on new skills was (and still is) a matter of survival for her people. Teyla has adjusted admirably to new concepts and ideas. The things we've seen her kind of puzzled about have more to do with colloquialisms and interpreting people's personal tastes (such as John's obsession with The Catch) than anything else.
I could go on but that would lead to me shaking my fist impotently and saying, "oooooh, oooooh."

Face it. SG1 and SGA have never written female characters well. One of the reasons my boyfr. doesn't watch SGA is because he finds the characters all laughably 2D and uninteresting - most especially Teyla and Ronon. Sometimes, I agree with him.
