Who He Is When Teyla's Looking

He likes the moments when they're not in the mess, not on mission. Sitting in his room or hers or one of the rec rooms with the door open just in case people want to peer in, when he's playing guitar and she's reading a book, or he's got his PDA and she's got Rodney's PSP, and the only sounds are the waves coming through the open windows and the noises of whatever they're doing.

Today, it's Eric Clapton and Warcraft on someone's borrowed laptop.

It started back when the expedition really was marooned. Time out; time away. Time to get to know each other - first as allies, then as team-mates, then as friends. John tried not to think of it as 'time together' because that suggested that they were...well...more than they were.

And, in the end, Teyla's always best for quiet company.

Rodney's good for conversation and an argument, when John's in the mood to challenge or be challenged - usually in something geeky. He can be a nerd with Rodney.

Ronon's good for a beer and someone to do things with. Not that Teyla isn't up for doing things, either, but John can be a guy with Ronon.

John goes to Teyla when he wants peace and acceptance and someone who doesn't grate. He can just be John Sheppard with Teyla.

Oh this was lovely, the quiet times to let go of walls and be one's self around Teyla.

I love that....I think John has different layers to himself that he shows to different people. With Teyla, he's not afraid to show them all and one in particular. That low key John.

I loved this. You've expressed so beautifully and subtly something that I read in a Miss Porcupine fic, the idea that John doesn't really have friends per se so much as he has people he does things with. You capture that sense that he gives each person what they expect/want to see: Rodney someone to bicker and geek out with, a fellow soldier to run and fights with to Ronon, a commander to his men, etc. Teyla is only person he ever really confides in or shows something close to who he really is under all the facades. I wish she had gone to Earth with him in Outcast. It would have been a much more revealing episode.
