Broad verdict: Predictable but enjoyable.
2.19 -Fail Safe Inferno
I'm a cynic. I admit it. I haven't seen any of the John-and-Rodney focused episodes this season where I didn't think, "I've seen this before."
On the whole, enjoyable for the John-and-Rodney snarking, their attempts to flirt with Nerina-the-blonde, the Teyla-and-Ronon dynamic and the cute little scene when they're boosting each other's spirits, to say nothing of Elizabeth and John's different ways of describing Rodney's infatuation with Nerina.
The thing with the ship was obvious from the first Earthquake. So was the destroyed gate. And the hyperspace window. They called this episode 'Fail Safe' when it showed in SG-1: the solution they were apparently working towards during the first 35 mins of the episode wasn't the final solution.
*sigh* I love the characters in Atlantis - their possibilities, their potential. The only problem is that the direction TPTB are taking - focusing on the military guy and the scientist - means they have no choice but to reiterate what they've already done in Stargate SG-1.
And, honestly? I preferred the SG-1 variation. At least I didn't think, Oh dear, second verse, same as the first. Probably because I hadn't heard the first verse at that stage, but anyway...
If TPTB focused on Elizabeth, Teyla, Ronon, and Carson, the show would become quite a bit wealthier in terms of storyline, characterisation, and originality - mostly because these are more complex characters than the two whose solutions usually involve shooting everything in sight, blowing things up, or fixing the (nearly) unfixable piece of technology, then thinking of a parallel action that will still save their hides.
Right now, I have about 4-5 long gen-fics planned out, mostly focused around the 'minor' characters: Rodney can't fix the solution, John can't blow it up, shoot it up, or argue his way out of it - the other characters get to save the day for a change.
Anyway, like Aurora, Inferno was a reasonably good episode, with rewatchable moments for sheer amusement value.
But I still wish they'd do something other than John-and/or-Rodney save the day. It's way old.

So much agreement. I remember watching 38 Minutes for example and thinking 'SG1 did so much better on that being stuck in the Stargate conecept'.
But I mujst say, Inferno is one of my favourite season 2 eps, just because it is such a 'normal' episode. It's something I would show someone unfamiliar with SGA.
