First game of the season today - at midday! It wasn't terribly hot but it was warm enough, and rather humid. The humidity wasn't helped by the fact that it's water-based turf, and so they water it at the end of every match.

This is a new competition for us - we used to play in the North Shore Association, now we play in the Sydney North Association. More teams, better pitches, and an entirely unknown level of skill.

At least we won't be the bottom team in the comp. We won - about, oh, 6-nil. At least three of them were scored by our centre half, who's one of our major goal scorers. The other team was pretty good, but we were better. I think they were near the bottom of the division though. We'll see how we do next week against one of the higher-ranked teams.

I played left wing, left inner, and left half, variously through the game. Flexibility isn't a bad thing, but it does mean you don't get into a groove during the game. And I don't play inner or half very often and I'm not as good at keeping up as some players.

I'm not sure I'm going to be allowed to stay in this division.

There are 16 people in my team so far - Division 2; they've indicated that they're looking to see about dropping someone down to Division 3, saying only that it's more likely to be based on position than anything else. I can play anywhere in the forward line, although I'm not so good at keeping up as an inner in a fast game, and towards the end, I can play as a half if they don't mind me failing miserably at tackles.

Let's just say, I'm not entirely sanguine about getting to stay in this division. Which is going to hurt a bit, because it's my team - the team I've been with pretty much since I started with Hornsby. And yes, it's competitive, but it's also a social thing for me. My friends (or, at least, the people I'm most friendly with) are in this division.

Oh well. Here's hoping it's a misplaced concern.
