So, I found myself at the parentals' house, waiting for the rest of the siblings to turn up for dinner. No computer (except the parental one) and a USB with several shows on!
Time enough to watch a couple of eps.
So, someone was nice enough to pass along a screener copy of the new show Almost Human and while the dialogue is a bit clunky and predictable in sections, the show certainly looks interesting.
Those of you who know me will know I've never been a fan of the bromance; however I am liking the dynamic between Kennex and Dorian. It helps that Kennex is Karl Urban and that Dorian is Michael Ealy.
(Curious question: did anyone request Almost Human for Yuletide, or wasn't it out at the time?)
The characterisations are good - perhaps a little stereotypical? I'd like to know more about the captain, although a few of her lines were a little bit...I don't know...they were stupid lines, and yet the character came across as much more intelligent than that. Also, she reminds me of Patricia Hayes. I don't know why.
The female detective wasn't bad, but she wasn't standout. I think I objected more to the impression that, according to the rulebook of such shows, she's slated to end up designated "the love interest". I'd have preferred if they hadn't done the dewy-eyed "interested looks" quite so early in the piece - but then, I tend to like the women who are a little less starry-eyed, but who still have the capability to hope and trust and believe.
I'm a bit peeved that Patel got killed in the first episode (the Asian in the uniform) because it seems pretty rare to find Asian characters in procedurals and I was hoping that she'd be something like the Peabody Kennex's Dallas (JD Robb's "In Death" series, at least to start with) - the street cop who helps out from time to time.
Kennex and Dorian are pretty much what you'd expect under the Odd Couple banner, and their dynamic looks like it's going to develop into a bit of an Esposito and Ryan, several shades more hard-boiled and a little more serious because Kennex and Dorian are the primary (serious) duo, not the background all-rounders (comedy, chorus, infodump) that Ryan and Esposito are.
A first glance, the show is pretty obvious about displaying its hooks - the girlfriend, Kennex's leg, the 'difference' between Dorian and the MXs, but given that this looks to be a JJ Abrams show (the Bad Robot production stamp came up at the end - how many does he have on the boil right now?) I wouldn't trust anything that turns up from episode to episode!
On the whole, this feels a bit like a cross between Fringe and Alias - a mystery/scifi/intrigue. And I really quite enjoyed it.
Looking forward to a better copy, but I'm happy I got my hands on this one!
