Thanks for writing for me!

I tend to like really rare pairings in megafandoms, which is always a problem, because there's loads of fic about these characters lying around, but never the pairing that I want to see them in, so I'm delighted that you're going to write these pairings for me!

My favourite stories tend to be the 'falling in love' stories - the one where the couple gradually discover the like each other, and then have to work out how to signal this to each other as well as what they're going to do about it.

Marvel Cinematic Universe: Maria Hill/Steve Rogers

I have somehow glommed onto this pairing of extreme rareness between two characters who've never even exchanged a word in the canon. Hopefully that will change in CA2, and hopefully the words will not be an argument (although an argument could be good under certain circumstances).

Stoic women are my thing, and Maria Hill fits this bill to a tee. Coolly competent, action girl, keeps her emotions contained. I love that she leapt into action when she saw what was happening, that she kept her head even when her expression in the tunnel shows her as terrified that she's taken on Clint, and that she questions the validity of the Avengers as a superhero team. A little skepticism is a wonderful thing.

Steve Rogers is exactly the kind of hero-character I like pairing my stoic women with. Innate courtesy, consideration, and a mind open enough to accept a woman who outranks him or gives him the commands. Plus, you know, I think that Maria would be skeptical of modern guys and their come-on lines, and Steve might just bypass that with his adorableness of awkward.

I like them together because I can see them both being very professional people when there's a job to be done, and very private people behind closed doors. And I like stories that upend the 'stoic women are really psychotic/robotic' tropes.

So...something with Steve being a gentleman and having to win Maria over bit by bit - wear down her defences. Only in unexpected ways - no flowers, chocolates, and promises he doesn't intend to keep, please!

Disney Animated Pictures: Fa Mulan/Li Shang

Something about their everyday interactions after they're together - what kind of conflicts do they face between the role of 'wife and mother' as they've been brought up to expect a woman to be and who Mulan is?

I first watched Mulan when I was 22 and I adored it. And I always wanted to know how she and Shang worked out their relationship amidst the rules and constrictions of society and its expectations. Yes, they're together at the end, and Mulan has been revealed to have been a woman serving in the army, but...what comes next?

Take Mulan 2 out of the picture entirely. (I've never seen it, and I'm a bit doubtful about direct-to-video Disney 2s.) Does she settle down to being a proper wife? Does she settle down to being an improper wife? Does she not settle down at all? How does it work to be a hero, daughter of a hero ("the Fa Zhou?"), and (well, prospective) wife of yet another hero?

There's a part of me that would like to see other guys coming along to see this woman who saved China, and how Mulan and Shang deal with her being a 'seven months wonder'. Maybe Mulan still sometimes goes out as 'Ping' - a common soldier accompanying Commander Li where he goes?

Oh yeah, I love Mulan's family: her parents' concerns, her grandmother's no-holds-barred commentary (I can imagine her being a bit of a Chinese Nanny Ogg), even her ancestors looking over her shoulder...

...This is probably seeming a bit more relevant to a 'rarewomen' letter than a 'shipswap' but I really do want to see how Mulan and Shang deal with each other, I just want it to be in relation to Mulan's life.

Sanctuary: Kate Freelander/Will Zimmerman

I wasn't that much of a Sanctuary fan until I met Kate Freelander, and then I was pretty much sold. I was disappointed that Agam Darshi didn't have more time on the show - I really wanted to see her and Helene interact way more than they got to. And, yeah, I liked the possibilities of the dynamic between her and Will.

Hm. Ideas for these two? Really, anything that involves their interaction - an escaped abnormal, a study in how their relationship would work amidst the chaos of the Sanctuary's daily operations, even a 'five times Date Night failed miserably, and one time it didn't' scenario? Scenes that look at the gamut of their dynamic. Oh, yes, Kali and Will being her 'priest' of sorts. What does Kate have to say about that? If anything?

Explain away Will's girlfriend and Kate's relationship with the Hollow Earther however you like. But I'm not a fan of either cheating or love triangles, so they should be past relationships when Kate and Will are together.

Angel, the series: Faith Lehane/Wesley Wyndam-Pryce

Oh, man, these two. I love the dysfunction inherent in that they're both 'second string' so far as the series is concerned. I love the trust issues and the authority issues and the emotional issues and...

Yeah, well. They're just fun to play with. I'd prefer not completely dark dysfunction - a little relatability would be good: some (emotional) demons laid to rest, etc. Something that plays off who and what they are to each other - their 'work' as well as their personal relationship? IDK.

Finally

Generally, you can't go wrong with focusing on their work situation (particularly from the POV of the female characters) and how they integrate that and their personal lives.

Thanks so much for writing this - I'm really going to enjoy what you write me, and I really appreciate you writing these extremely rare and rather difficult-to-find-new-stuff pairings!
