Okay, first off the bat, this episode really got me in the whole 'team-angle' aspect.
TEAM SQUEE!
*runs around squealing for a few hours*
All righty, then! Now that we've got that out of the way...
SGA 3.10 - The Return
Uhh...I think that's about it, really.
No, wait! The scenes between everyone were cute. Ronon roughhousing John during that goodbye scene? Cuteness! John and Teyla's goodbye in the gateroom with the Athosian touch-heads thing? Cuteness! Carson gently overriding Elizabeth when she tries to make an excuse about not coming out with him, Rodney, and John? Cuteness! Yes, even the scenes between John and Elizabeth had a cuteness about them. I may not like them as a pairing, but they make great friends. Just like John and Rodney - those two were damn funny - especially when they're back on Earth and Rodney's trying not to be a softie...except that he is, and John totally knows it.
Teyla negotiating with Ladon of the Gennii? Okay, not cute, exactly, but a nice little angle in on what the Athosians are doing and how Teyla and Ronon are perceived by the 'technologically advanced' races of Pegasus. Nice to see someone appreciating their skills and abilities on the show for a change!
It's almost a pity that Atlantis is so ambivalent about the Gennii (not without reason, I'll admit - although they carry it to extremes I think). I'd love to see the Gennii 'headhunting' Teyla and Ronon and Atlantis realising, "we really should appreciate these guys more". Actually, I'd love it if TPTB appreciated Teyla and Ronon more.
Anyway, it seems that whatever TPTB and fandom think, John and the others certainly appreciate them. Picking them up on the way in to Atlantis? Both practical and sweet. And I thought it was really adorable how John puts forward the proposition to take Atlantis back, and Ronon looks at Teyla for the cue. I still don't see Ronon and Teyla as a couple (and, thankfully, neither does Jason Momoa or Joe Mallozzi) but I love the dynamic between them.
The John/Teyla angles were fairly strong in this episode - biased though I am. Between John inviting them to Earth and Teyla inviting him to stay with the Athosians, the Athosian-style head-touch in the Gateroom with extra added whisper of "Take care" from John - if he'd spoken it rather than whispered it, then it wouldn't have been half so shippy - and Teyla's "OMG! John!" reaction when he and the others walk out of the darkness in the Athosian camp, I think I'm all shipped out for this ep. Whew!
I'm really interested in how they're going to play out John's future - if they play out John's future. Knowing TPTB, they'll probably just go with "he saves Jack's life and Jack keeps John's head out of the noose" - which works in a typically Stargate-esque kind of way, but is such a cop-out. I want blood! Okay, so I really want consequences, although the odds of getting them are slim to none.
Also, what I want to know is who the hell Ronon was looking at when his eyes slid away from John and Teyla's farewell in the Gateroom. Just because.
This episode was really more of a setup for the next one - with some very nice character interactions.
I have a caps post over at the
john_teyla community. The two scenes that are capped are John and Ronon roughhousing in John's room while Teyla laughs at them, and John and Teyla's goodbye in the Gateroom.
I'll get around to making some icons sometime soon. Maybe.
