Okay, for the 24th December
colls asked "If you were to create a movie/tv show entirely from scratch, what would the premise be? Who would you cast as your leading lady?
I really love how the assumption is that my main character would be a leading lady. *grin* You know me far too well!
As a matter of fact, I’ve had this idea for quite a while (about 5 years).
Miriam Station
Blurb
Hell hath no fury like a husband scorned as Patricia Senison finds out when she discovers her bitter ex-husband pulled strings to have her assigned far from Terran Central. Mere light years away from the Maristi border, Miriam Station may not be Mos Eisley, but it's on the edge of Terran space, and is home to a conglomeration of organisations, both private and government. In this busy and often volatile space station and its inhabitants, Senison has just been assigned as the new Security Head of Miriam Space Station.
As the last Terran Space Station before Maristi territory, Miriam is a major station to not only the Terran Mil and the RimRunners but also Mil Operations - the 'spy arm' of the Terran Mil, and the Wolf's Cry corporate trading company, who have exclusive trading rights with the Maristi - when they can get them. With space pirates hiding out in the asteroid belt, occasional skirmishes against renegade Maristi inflights, on-station fights between the Mil and the RimRunners, and the endless politics - stationary and interplanetary - there's more than enough to keep Senison and her team occupied and busy.
And that's not even counting the attentions of Scott. S. Lupin, black sheep of the Lupin family, who was cited as the reason for Patricia’s divorce and who arrives at Miriam station, ostensibly to whip Wolf’s Cry into shape after a disappointing few years, but also with an eye to re-starting his relationship with Patricia.
Cast - Miriam Station Security
Patricia Senison (played by Janine Turner)

Leader, ex-husband is Unitas Mil. She had a career in international diplomatics for 20 years, is brisk, no-nonsense, and more than a little sharp with her subordinates, but good with people generally. Has an exhaustive knowledge of literature, legends, and a tendency to link the two in her head. Lots of literary/historical references, very efficient, and not happy to be stranded out here on Miriam Station.
Patricia replaces Kevin Lake, who'd been in the position of the convener for the forensics team for the station for the last twelve years. suspected his replacement is due to his personality clash with the new military commander for Miriam Station - Jose Escada
Gabi Hornby (played by Rachel Luttrell)

Gabi used to be a RimRunner - one of the frontline fighters in the war against the Maristi. Her craft was shot up during a dogfight, she ejected, but got hit by shrapnel, which left her with a bung shoulder. She took a job with Miriam Station security because at least she knew the politics and the ins and outs of the station, and turned out to be good at the practical things. She knows weapons – on-station and off-, and the way the Mil and the ‘Runners work, as well as the politics of the station.
Her sense of humour is droll, her wit sarcastic, and her life private.
Douglas (played by Peter Wingfield)

Douglas is the technical/computer expert for Miriam Security. He's on Mil secondment for reasons unspecified - a source of conflict for Senison, since she doesn't know where his loyalties lie. But because Douglas’ technical, he can get her the data she needs, and often does. Senison only discovers he's on Mil secondment later - so not quite the breaking-and-entering she was hoping for. Still, he's good at what he does - programming, computers, networking, finding the data that people don't want found - just has a habit of humming showtunes and mumbling to himself. Is known for sometimes zoning out, although never yet at a critical moment. He’s outright snarky, and he and Gabi have fun verbal volleying.
Aaron Luu (played by Brian Yang)

Aaron’s a political/procedural expert - knows how things work in a formal way on Miriam station has a good sense of the politics of Earth vs Maristi and how they apply to what's going on in Miriam station. Links with the Mil Ops people - was originally in Mil Ops, but would have been stuck as a data analyst, has a running series of chess games with one of the restaurant chefs, and a wife and two kids in the (small) station school.
Savi Prabhu (Played by Rekha Sharma)

Savi is the medical examiner, with a Mil background and a husband doing mechanics for the ‘Runners. Her sense of humour is pitch black and very droll – she often says that working for Miriam Station Security is just like working for Mil Medical, except her patients are usually just a little bit more dead.
There are a lot of recurring characters – Miriam station administrative staff, personnel from the Mil and the ‘Runners, and a number of diplomats. Basically, Senison’s been thrust into a position that amounts to being right on the edge of a battlefield, which deals with a bunch of organisations that tend to be run as personal fiefdoms (at least out on Miriam), and she’s got to keep the whole situation balanced on a knifepoint as outright war with the Maristi threatens.
An example of an exchange, after someone turns up in the infirmary with their nervous system fried:
Gabi: "A '47 scatter-shot pulser - full weight, which is illegal on Miriam. The scatter-shot sends multiple minor electrical jolts through the system - enough to temporarily disorient the perp. It's common enough in LEOs back on Earth, but illegal on Miriam - the scatter pattern of the pulser doesn't discriminate between the human body and delicate station systems.
Patricia: And someone’s brought one onto my station. And doesn’t care if they fry something that doesn’t regenerate. How temporary is the disorientation?
Doug: According to the specs, a couple of hours. In actual fact, it takes much longer than that.
Patricia: How much longer?
Doug: I was tingly for days. It was wonderful.
And so on. :)
It's basically NCIS meets Deep Space Nine. (And there's a reason that this hasn't been done before, but what the hell, I like the idea so it has a potential viewership of exactly one. :D)

Actually, race comes into my idea of the series quite a bit in a background sense.
The Unitas Mil is formed largely from 'western' countries and tend to have better equipment/training, while the Rim Runners are considered (by the political groups) the cheap shock-troops of Terra - peoples who are considered 'expendable'. So The RimRunner characters would be largely filled by non-white actors, while the Mil would be primarily white actors.

I think a cop show in space (which this sounds like a more complex version of) should be done and we should start a campaign to pitch this to some network. Or to Netflix. SOMEONE MAKE THIS!!
I like how much detail you already know about this. Like how the guy places chess with a restaurant cook (immediately made me think of Quark and Odo for some reason - also Bashir and Garrick - IDK) and how this Lupin guy is coming to the station with his sordid past with Senisen. So very intriguing!
