For we are young and FREE!

Freedom House have a "Freedom Score" for all the countries of the world, based on civil liberties, human rights, etc. A score of 100 indicates the best freedoms.

Australia: 98

Scandinavian countries: 100
Canada: 99
New Zealand: 98
USA: 90

So if we're trailing Scandinavia and Canada, we're not doing too terribly, I guess? :)

Of course, things look better from afar than they do on the ground. But at least we have the recourse to change the world as, say, the people in China or Russia don't, even if change comes slow.

Thanks for that - interesting. Though I couldn't see the detailed report for Australia, to find out about the missing 2%. This was the first time I'd seen the acronym MENA, too, so that's one for me to note for the future.
(In the section headed "Select a country report", there are not many countries - and Australia isn't one of them!)
