Sometimes it takes me ages to get back to a meme: fannish quizmeme from a while back.

My apologies to [personal profile] facethestrange for not answering sooner!

1 character: Kara Thrace
1. Could you take them in a fight?
Hell to the no! She's a soldier, I am...not. At the very least, Kara would fight dirty.

2. Would you let them cook for you?
Only if I were absolutely desperate. We're both better off if I'm in charge of food.

3. They give you a haircut! Is it any good?
I'm not fussy about haircuts. My haircut on any given day is "tie my hair into a long ponytail, then saw off the ponytail". And then I curl it in an uptwist. So, no, Kara's haircut is probably not 'good' but I'm not fussed about it.

4. What would they get you for your birthday, if anything?
Tickets to a pyramid game, maybe.

5. If they were a YouTuber, what sort of content would they create? Would you be subscribed to them?
I feel like Kara would have all kinds of little things to say about life on Galactica, the things going on around her, and her opinion of Colonial politics. I'd probably be subscribed to her channel, but I wouldn't be a regular watcher - just one of those ones that I check in for updates every now and then.

2 characters: Faith Lehane, Cordelia Chase
1. You have to choose one to erase from their series! Who do you pick?
Faith is probably more 'erasable' because she appears less often, but I like her better than Cordy.

2. Who would you rather run into in a dark alley at night?
Depends. Is Cordy Cordy? Or is she the-mother-of-Jasmine (who is also Jasmine)? Because then I'd take my chances with Faith.

Otherwise, if Cordy is just Cordy, I'd meet Cordy in a dark alleyway and get chewed out for either scaring her half to death or being dressed unfashionably.

3. Who would you save from a burning building? Who would be more likely to save you from a burning building?

I'd try saving either of them from a burning building, but would more likely end up saved by Faith. (Not Works. Dur hur hur.)

4. Who would win in a dance-off?
Probably Faith.

5. They swap bodies for 24 hours! How badly do they mess up (or improve) each other's lives?
Someone must have written a fic for this. It would be hilarious, but also terrifying.

3 characters: Granny Weatherwax, Polly Perks, Sybil Ramkin
1. Who would you rather swap aesthetics/outfits with for a day?
Not Polly. I kinda feel socks would just get in the way of, well, everything. And I'm not sure there's that much difference between Granny and Lady Sybil's clothing - old and practical and well-patched, I imagine.

2. Who do you team up with in a 2v2 volleyball match? Which side wins?
I was going to say Polly, but honestly I think it's safer to be on Granny's side, even if we lose.

3. If each of them got one million dollars, who would waste/spend their money the fastest?
Polly, probably. But mostly because a million is nothing to Lady Sybil, and money isn't particularly relevant to Granny... Honestly, any of these three women would probably easily drop it straight into their pet project (whatever that happened to be at the time).

4. Who would die first in a horror movie? Who would be the survivor?
...that's a really difficult one. I feel like Granny would be the 'die first', but also she would be the survivor at the end: I ATEN'T DEAD.

5. They're all on the run from the law! What crimes did each commit and who is most likely to get caught?
If the law has any sense, then the law will stop chasing any of them IMMEDIATELY. Look, Granny would get caught and then, well, they'd let her go because she's Granny. Polly would get caught and then narrativium would get her out of it (most likely with help from The Squad). And Lady Sybil wouldn't commit a crime in the first place, and if she did, it wouldn't be a crime. I can't explain that any better.

Marginal March: for the unseen, unappreciated characters.

You know what to do...

I think I'm going to make bread today. Let it sit overnight. Bake it tomorrow morning for a fresh loaf.

I would kind of like to invite friends over for supper tonight. Or go out for dinner or something. IDK. It feels a little bit desperate, perhaps, but also I'm kind of itching for company... But also more effort than I can be bothered with...

Haven't done anything fannish in a while. Admittedly, I'm not into any new fandoms, really. Bridgerton is the newest and even it's occasional. Pick any fandom you know I've been in, toss in characters I don't like, feel free.

Send me 1 character and I'll answer:

1. Could you take them in a fight?
2. Would you let them cook for you?
3. They give you a haircut! Is it any good?
4. What would they get you for your birthday, if anything?
5. If they were a YouTuber, what sort of content would they create? Would you be subscribed to them?

Send me 2 characters and I'll answer:

2. Who would you rather run into in a dark alley at night?
3. Who would you save from a burning building? Who would be more likely to save you from a burning building?

Stolen from [personal profile] alexcat:

Give me a fanfiction trope(s) and I’ll grade it:

A: Love it. Spend my time combing AO3 for it.
B: Like it. Not one of my bigger cravings, but it can scratch a certain itch if I’m in the right mood.
C: Neutral. A good author might be able to sell it, but a bad one will kill it deader than dead.
D: Not my favorite. I avoid it if I can, but it won’t necessarily put me off reading something.
F: Hate it. Will immediately make me nope out of a fic.

--

Have started the chocolate hazelnut cherry rum truffles - they're probably ready to assemble by now. It doesn't seem to make much anymore - maybe 20? I remember making trays and trays of them with mum...

Then again, she would gift them to all and sundry - friends, relatives, music teachers...everyone. So it's maybe no wonder we were roped into making so many of them.

It's been a few years since I made them, though, and in that time all the ingredients have gotten more expensive and they're in far smaller packets than they used to be. A 290g pack of choc melts is now more expensive than the 375g pack it was 20 years ago.

--

I also boiled the potatoes for the potato salad.

Later - as in, full on evening - I'm going to make the pavlova meringue.

I really should charge the twins for groceries and effort...

--

Still nothing from anyone who wants to meet up on Christmas Day. But truly, if someone messages me on Christmas morning and says 'hey, can we meet?' I'm not actually going to say no, although I might be a little disconcerted. Ah well.

answer post the second

Forthwith, the third post!

3. What do you think makes your writing stand out from other works?

I like to think it's that I write different characters to the mainstream, and I write them differently to the mainstream.

beef, pork, chicken, mmm - but mostly beef )

Two more to go! #19 and #5.

If you want to ask one of the questions, drop the comment in the original meme post.

17. A trope you’ll never, ever write for. requested by [personal profile] rmc28

I have yet to write an A/B/O trope, and I'm pretty sure that'll never happen, although one never knows. I'm not a big fan of biological determinism, and although it could maybe be subverted, it would probably take more effort than I could be bothered expending!

22. Do you listen to anything while you write? requested by [personal profile] senmut

Mostly I don't. I like quiet so I can think and someone singing at me just gets distracting. Also, music has a lot of associations for me, so that can also divert my thoughts from what I should be writing to whatever mood the song has me in.

That said, in recent years, I've started writing to music )

27. What’s the nicest comment you’ve ever received? requested by [personal profile] beatrice_otter

I've gotten a lot of comments over the decades, and I can't actually remember which one was "the nicest". But I can tell you the ones that I love receiving and often later re-reading when I come back to a story and read the comments weeks, months, even years later.

It's always delightful to hear from people who loved the story, but particularly delightful to hear what they loved: the phrasing, the characterisation, the situation/crisis and how I resolved it.

As an example, my recent fic 'Twelve Steps' is a canon-divergence from Endgame, and quite a few of the comments mentioned that they not only loved the changes I made and the reasons I gave, but also they loved that I'd followed the logical conclusion of the events of the movie, as well as how clear it was that the characters had changed in their time apart from each other.

Those are the comments that warm my heart: where people appreciate and pick out the details that struck them, particularly when those details are ones that I took pains to include in the story.

--

2. Why do you write fanfiction? requested by [personal profile] rmc28

Thinking all the way back to my earliest days of fanfic conceptualisation, it was usually because I wanted to see a variation on a story that wasn't contemplated in canon.

I wanted to see Leia save the galaxy and her brother. I wanted to read more about Generation X (of the X-Men comic books)'s interactions with each other and the world around them as teenagers rather than as superheroes. I wanted Sam Carter to end up with Jack O'Neill without losing her sass and her delight in technology and her duty in the military. I wanted to explore the dynamics between the characters of the Justice League cartoons both when the world's fate rested on their shoulders and when it didn't...

A lot of times, I write fanfic because I want to see a scenario about a character that I like, but who isn't well-liked by most fans, or whose fans can't write them as the character in which I see them. And yes, I have a type when it comes to fanfic characters, and yes, they're a bit like me in character (which makes it considerably easier to write tem).

And, you know, the feedback is nice. :)

I really should go out and dig the hole for that extra chook yard post. Some physical action will definitely help my state of mind and body.

It's grey today, with a drizzle of rain every now and then, and a general feeling of dampness. I'm sitting in the lounge room with Maladicta curled up on a cushion beside me, and a file open in 4TheWords and I'm writing. Just worked out a good personal-interaction scene for the MC to connect with someone that I want to turn up as a recurring character in this story and others.

Trying to decide what to have for lunch. Have started making some tabbouleh, except without the bulgur wheat; it's mostly tomato (winter tomato) and shallots right now. Which probably isn't tabbouleh, exactly.

I made Kansas City BBQ pork ribs yesterday - well, the cut was 'pork belly ribs' which is a small cut of pork ribs with a lot of belly meat on it (probably because they've taken the skin for crackling). The chipotle apricot sauce was *chef's kiss*: sweet and spicy and fruity and all the good things turned into a marinade crust.

Thought I'd make a black forest cake today, but that will mostly depend on time and energy. I kind of want to make a chocolate mud cake for the cake, but I think that's too rich for a black forest cake. And I'd like to make a black forest pavlova like a recipe that I've had for decades, but...that's a lot of effort, really!

My hockey club, denied the back end of our season, have been watching the Olympics together, and it's been very fun and sociable this week. Quite a few of the ladies have developed a crush on the Aussie and Belgian penalty-flick takers on the men's hockey teams - Blake Govers (AUS) and Alexander Hendriks (BEL) and it's been amusing to watch.

The social interaction is good since some are feeling very isolated by lockdown, and struggling somewhat. At least two are single parents and isolation and lockdown is taking its toll on them and their kids. So we're going to do a weekly zoom meeting for an hour or so on Sunday afternoons at 3pm.

Sorry if I've been over all this in the last week and you're re-reading it. I'll be putting up a separate gardening post over in [community profile] gardening, and will link back here. Hopefully. :)

Day 5: Compare and/or contrast your very first fandom obsession and your very latest fandom obsession.

So...the issue with this is that I'm not sure what my Very First Fandom Obsession is.

If we count meeting people via the Internet, then probably Discworld fandom.

If we count being excited about a canon to the point of thinking up stories about those characters? I was doing that in 4th grade (10 years old) about 80s cartoons (Mask and She-Ra at the very least).

I know I had a BIG PLAN for a Star Wars AU where Luke falls to the dark side on Death Star II and Leia has to go on the run and save her brother and the galaxy...

Seen with [personal profile] paulamcg:

Rules: List the first lines of your last 20 stories (if you have less than 20, just list them all!). See if there are any patterns. Choose your favorite opening line. Then tag 10 authors!

1. Dark Knight: Dominion: She did not fear death.

2. Chicken Soup For The Spock: Once it was ascertained that his illness was neither a concerning disease, nor that he was not contaigious to the crew, Spock was permitted to return to his quarters.

3. Absent Friends: The bar in Iowa feels strangely empty.

4. The Most Australian Jaegers That Ever There Were: On a cool morning in May 2017, the Sydney Shatterdome is formally opened.

5. How Not To Take All Your Toys And Go Home: Maria calls Rhodey first because his body might be in recovery; the tactical sharps of his brain is not.

6. Seen And Unseen: Perhaps most terrifying is that it’s the women who see him most clearly for what he is, and are willing to use him to the full extent of his experience and knowledge.

7. Lost And Found: As it starts to sink in that they've won the Battle of Wakanda, an odd thought pings against Steve's brain: Tony has a daughter.

8. Sokovia, Suburbia, and the Senate: Dinner was from Portillos: burgers, Italian beef sandwiches, chips, and onion rings.

9. A Time of Confidences: It’s distinctly unnerving to watch yourself walking up the ramp of a spaceship.

10. The Gathering Clouds: An icy wind whipped the loose ends of Maria’s hair as they landed in drifting snow.

11. Circling To A Close: The weyrlings are off-limits.

12. 'Smith' Will Suffice: Clint wasn’t surprised that such a scrawny guy could put up such a fight; after all, he’d been a scrawny guy once, a long time back.

13. Behind Every Great Woman: Natasha trusts Maria Hill has a good reason for being crouched over what looks like a SHIELD hacking interface in the foyer of the Quinjet hangar of the Tower.

14. First Glimpse Of Hearts: Steve pauses at the edge of the gardens, taking a moment to breathe in the warm scent of the midmorning, not yet the intense heat of the midday and afternoon, but swiftly heading there.

15. Survivors: "Next question," says Raleigh, his hand wrapped firmly about Mako's.

16. Hell Hath No Fury Like A Hero Scorned: The call comes mid-morning, while she's reviewing intel on a lab in Guilin, China.

17. Another Suitcase in Another Hall: Two weeks after he rides out of New York City, Steve Rogers rides back into town again.

18. The Coming Future: In the chaos after the moment - that moment - Shuri has but one thought: to assure herself that T'Challa has survived.

19. Of Princesses And Witches: Princess Esmerelda Margaret Note Spelling of Lancre does not suffer anyone to call her 'Spelly'.

20. the inconvenience of an apology: Maria moves through the crowds like she knows exactly where she’s going.

I suck at deciding if there's patterns in my stories. Doesn't everyone write like this? Opening with a bang, putting out scene/problem at the get-go, or setting up the theme/feel of the story? Isn't that how stories work?

I have bought Amazon Prime (for a month) and Kindle Unlimited (for three months at half-price) and I am contemplating buying Netflix for a couple of months to watch 'The Bridgertons'.

I blame the bluray player with recording features which I bought for B1 for Christmas. (I also bought B2 a bluray player with various similar, but lesser, features.) I plan to watch through The Hobbit at some stage. Exactly when? Don't know.

Today, someone is coming by to pick up some metal fencing that we have which has been sitting around for forever and a day. HUZZAH!

There's also garden planning to be done for the city garden trail that's taking place in late February and mid-March. Same one as last year but two weekends: one in-person, one virtual. I need to sort out what I'm going to plant for displaying and eating and what other tasks need to be done and when.

I also have to get the water tank connected up.

Don't know what, if anything, is happening New Year's Eve. In previous years, friends from church would do the big NYE party, but obviously this year it's unwise. I think smaller parties may be taking place at various houses across the city - I think one sister may go down to spend NYE with cousins in Cronulla, and the other may go to a friend's place in Meadowbank.

Sydney is still trying to find the 'missing links' to about 7 cases which have no known point of origin, and until we find them, regular celebrations are not going to go forward. I know a mere 7 cases is not big for other countries (and technically it's not big here) but those missing links could be anywhere and the potential for it all getting out of control is huge.

Thing is, we won't know how big and bad it is until next week and beyond.

Today is 'trying to write' day. We'll see how that goes.
