Recs first:

The Same Voice by [livejournal.com profile] purple_cube: John/Teyla - doppelgänger!Sheppard and a living!Sumner in Atlantis! What's not to love?

A Preference For Temperate Weather by [livejournal.com profile] pentapus: John/Teyla - John and Teyla on Earth (with possible John/Teyla/Rodney threesome angles)!

Pox by [livejournal.com profile] iheartkeys: It's labelled John/Teyla, but it's really John&Teyla and John&team and is adorable for the image of John running around looking after his sick team-mates.

--

And a couple of fics:

Take - John/Teyla, Conversion-fic,

All Or Nothing - Ronon/Elizabeth, Earth-fic.

I was thinking about writing a Rodney/Ronon kiss for that challenge, but ran out of time.

Oh, and the Porn Battle is coming up, so getcha smut ideas up and lined!

The kisses fest is still open if you want to submit more. I created the masterlist for ease of reference for all - my layout isn't really cut out for uses like the fest...

I'd honestly love to see more kisses if people have them. It's been nice to come online and see more posts there. I'm not real good at commenting or promoting, so if you know places where there are more people hiding that might be interested...

Ah...you know, I thought there would be many more people wanting to write Not!McShep. While I am surprised in some ways at the turn out, cos there are more fics than I honestly expected, a part of me is also a little...not disappointed...disheartened maybe?

You don't have to write any more if you don't want - I realised that the masterlist might have communicated the wrong thing, that is all...

Ah, I didn't know anyone else had done that you see...since I'd not seen anything about that in the LJ 'verse...

Sometimes the stranglehold of that pairing on this fandom kills me...
Wednesday, July 11th, 2007 12:14 am (UTC)
No, I meant McShep...sorry about that.

God, I have a serious problem with doing that today.

ROFL! :oD

Some balance would be nice. My previous writing fandoms - mainly boyband slash - never had the problem of such overwhelming dominance by one pairing.

I don't hate either of the popular pairings - if they are well written I will read. I just yearn for variety...and some decent gen.
Wednesday, July 11th, 2007 01:05 am (UTC)
Aye, you certainly have. I've written a mix of things too - slash, het AND gen. I like reading a mix as well - though I admit a leaning towards writing around a certain Lt. Col. I used to be a slasher through and through, but these days I'm finding I enjoy any gen I can get my hands on more. And there is even room for some het - someone wrote Sheppard/Heightmeyer and I can say that I don't think there is enough of that in this world.

I actually got the Taking Flight 'zines recently and really enjoyed the variety of fic in there.

Wednesday, July 11th, 2007 01:49 am (UTC)
I saw your prefs on your userinfo and figured you probably wouldn't be getting much het in that direction!

Not really - I think there have been a handful at most, and one of those was written for me by a friend...

I haven't ever really written Kate Heightmeyer as more than a passing character before. I'm not sure I can. And then, too, I'm not sure I could ship her with John.

I've never actually written the pairing myself, and while I enjoy reading it, I just cannot seem to find her voice within me to put something down in writing. I find rare pairings with John more easy to envision, because I find some pairings way too obvious - Sheppard/Weir and McShep, especially so. John/Teyla to an extent too. I think John would be into something rather more private than that, however there are few canon female atlantis-based characters remaining that we know enough about to really mine for use in het pairings. All of this said, I can appreciate good fic around the mentioned pairings.

John's either paired Teyla, Sam Carter, or Ronon in my mind...

Sam and John??? That is some evil joke, right? Seriously though, that is one pairing I just cannot see, now or ever. I'm filled with dread at the thought of a surge of that pairing...

*'Blue Brain Of Death' at the mere thought of that pairing*

I see John as a private guy, sure. But I see him opening up to Teyla more than he does to anyone else on the show - there's a degree of comfort between them that suggests a willingness to be intimate - on John's part, particularly.
that's an interesting point, it's almost like she is his emotional anchor.

Well, I admit that I envision it more as a "they have history" pairing, not a "current in the here and now" pairing.
i'm totally down with past sam/john. i've read some and it's interesting.

Joe says a lot of things about romance in shows and generally I read it as if he thinks romance for the sake of it is a bad thing. I'm not so sure whether it is a preference for the ship to be in the show, or rather if it is going to be there, that is the route they'd go. If it was shown through plot and furthered things, fine but given the handling of this particular type of plot point by TPTB in SG-1, I'd rather they left it well alone.

Canonically, I find it difficult to figure out what exactly John's relationships are with other characters, mainly because such a limited range of his emotions are shown within canon, and mostly in relation to events rather than other characters. He says he cares for them like family, but that is generally only shown via passion for keeping them safe. There are few really intimate moments at all. If anything, I think the most intimate conversation with another character when the guard actually came down, where he seemed comfortable to share, was with Ronon in 'Sunday'.

I'm not totally adverse to the idea of John and Teyla - I just think things about them both - him especially - need defining and developing more.

Well, I admit that I envision it more as a "they have history" pairing, not a "current in the here and now" pairing.

:oD I can deal with 'they have history'. 'Here and now' is probably my first real full-on pairing squick and is something that really started turning my stomach with the advent of certain S4 spoilers...

I was thinking of a specific interview where he was asked about on-show chemistry, and said something to the effect of: "Sheppard and Weir don't have chemistry; Sheppard and Teyla do, and the show's been written to take advantage of that."

I vaguely remember that interview. I think that can be interpreted a lot of ways though - chemistry between characters doesn't necessarily mean romance. And I can certainly see where that is coming from - there is definitely more between John and Teyla as characters than there is John and Elizabeth, which could lead to even more between John an Teyla. At present, I can see them as a couple in well written fiction, but outside of that, I struggle to see them as anything other than sibling-like.

I actually find it amusing that I don't really see subtext in SGA so much, mainly due to a contingent of hardcore shippers using it to further militant behaviour, yet when I read interviews I always find some. Especially with Joe who is the king of subtext. I often wonder if I just read interviews wrong...

Oh, definitely. There's a lot of stuff that hasn't been addressed for the characters - part of which is because it's an action-adventure show rather than a drama - but partly because TPTB are lazy on the emotional/personal side of the stories.

I would say mostly column B personally, with column A as the excuse for that behaviour. I recall the whole spiel about 'parameters of a hero' from various sources and just thought to myself - "None of you are 24 fans then?" I still don't understand why they think the 'hero' has to be this person who cannot be vulnerable or have weaknesses or deficiencies. Jack Bauer's have made for a way more interesting character than I ever see John Sheppard ever being in canon.

I REALLY should sleep...

after being completely spoiled by band rps, i can't ever believe that john/rodney is slashy. they're friendly, yes, but i can't ever slash them and therefore can't really bring myself read any of the fic.
Wednesday, July 11th, 2007 01:18 am (UTC)
I struggle to imagine John and Rodney in that kind of relationship, however, since I do enjoy slash and finding regular doses of other pairing involving John is almost impossible, I often end up reading McShep just out of frustration at having nothing else to read. If there were a plentiful supply of John with Ronon, or Evan, or Carson, or Radek, I probably wouldn't go near McShep.

I'm loathe to say I don't really see it, because it infers that appropriation mentality of fandom and I don't watch shows like that. I keep my watching of the show and my fic-reading separate, and I hate the appropration of characters that involves that 'OMG MOMENT IN CANON' crap you see all too often in this fandom and is especially prevalent in certain ships. Shows are what I see and is 'canon' - fic is really anything I want to imagine. it's possibility in canon is of little consequence or importance to me. Except when I read gen, of course. ;o)
Wednesday, July 11th, 2007 03:01 am (UTC)
the thing about john/rodney (i refuse to use the damn portmanteau) for me is that, while i can see and understand where the subtext would lie in the show, it just doesn't convey into fic that i want to read.

but the stories featuring john and ronon work better for me because their interaction seems to convey much more easily for me. there have been stories recced all over the place and i don't read them simply because john/rodney is simply not a pairing that works for me.

heh, in my current fandom, anything could be considered canon and sometimes you wonder if the canon reads our fic.

I can't really put down why McShep (lazy!) doesn't particularly work as a pairing for me. I don't know if I can say I don't see where other people's subtext comes from...more that it's not something that interests me in the canon watching of a show. I think skewed perceptions of others have left me avoiding looking for subtext, which might explain my love of pairings where there isn't that much available due to distinct lack of interaction between those characters.

Ultimately, I think the most off-putting aspect of the pairing is their canon behaviour towards each other. I can't make that behaviour translate into more than possible casual sex - certainly not an established relationship - which probably accounts for McShep being nothing more than my gay p*rn fix. I could probably include my distinct lack of interest in Rodney as a character too. Pretty much the entire fandom is alight with how 'brilliant' he is - I just find him distinctly annoying.

Honestly, there are very few things in SGA fandom writing that I'd like to see as canon. There is the odd story delving into the past that I could see being backstory and people comment of areas that need developing that I might agree with, but on the whole, no.
