*makes Obi-Wan gesture*

I know her from hockey. She loves a good glass of white and usually a whole bottle and we went out to the night noodle markets one Friday night last month with friends and had a grand time. We watched two and a half seasons of BSG together, and the other week as we watched S2 of Leverage, she mentioned that she missed SGA and was sorry there were no more adventures.

I know him from work. He used to stop by my desk and argue the ins and outs of the Stargate shows, discussing the characters and where they were going, the adventures they went on, and the episodes that had just shown the previous weekend. He's enjoying SGU, in his 50s and likes a good story.

I know her from church. She was in a ministry training program but quit this last year. I discovered she had a fondness for sci-fi during our second meeting, and we nearly ended up discussing the morality of BSG, Star Wars, Stargate, and assorted other sci-fi programs in the middle of a church women's supper. She just got engaged to a guy at her bible college and likes to sit back and read to relax.

I know him from university days. He's a Linux geek who likes good food and is studying for his Masters in...accounting. Or actuarial studies. We exchange book recs and story recs, discuss society and political views, and maybe if I ever finish a novel, he'll be one of the people I ask to read it through to see if it catches his interest.

These aren't the kinds of fans that you'll see around internet fandom. They wouldn't join email lists or update a blog. They don't discuss any '-isms' in casual conversation. At least two hold right-wing views (for an Australian).

Frankly, these aren't the fans you're looking for.

But these are four people I'll be reccing the Stargate Atlantis: Legacy books to.

They enjoyed the show and are disappointed there aren't any more stories. They liked the characters and would like to learn more about them. They don't care about pairings, or whether the authors are pandering to them and their tastes. They're not bothered by the idea that the story won't be about John and Rodney's relationship of True Friendship That Surpasses All Understanding And Have Some Broccoli Too! They're not going to get angry because the story wasn't written for their specific tastes. If they don't like the story, they won't get entitled about it, although they will be disappointed.

They're ordinary, run-of-the-mill, offline, un-fannish people who would never have a journal or a blog, and who probably wouldn't participate online even if they knew about it.

But they enjoyed Stargate Atlantis while it was showing and would like to find more adventures about the characters in the show.

So, yeah, when [profile] jo_graham says that she's not writing for an audience of fandom-hopping academics in the north-east and south-west USA, I imagine that the kind of people she has in mind as the target audience are these four and plenty of other people.
