I finished the SGA Legacy book series back at the start of the year, reading The Inheritors almost as soon as it came out. I started this post and then kind of forgot about it. (Oops.)

However, with the announcement of another SGA book series (two books, Elizabeth-centric, with team) I figure that now is a good time to pimp the six books of the SGA Legacy series to what remains of my f-list, in the hope that a handful of one-time SGA fans will read it and be encouraged to actually read the series.

why you should be reading the SGA Legacy series )

So, yeah, if you're reading this, and you enjoy my writing (or, at least, the kind of writing I aspire to), and you enjoyed Stargate Atlantis, you should go and buy the SGA Legacy series. Because it rocks.

To all my old friends from SG1, you will really really want to read the new SG1 book from Fandemonium, Moebius Squared. Trust me. Really.

An excerpt over at [livejournal.com profile] jo_graham's journal, along with the new cover!

I know most of you have completely given up on Atlantis for other pastures and are never looking back, but for those of you who want a small idea of what's going on, [livejournal.com profile] jo_graham has a small preview of the sixth book in the 'SGA Legacy' series, Inheritors which is a conversation between Teyla and a Wraith Queen.

Let's just say, it's really powerful stuff, and the kind of no-easy-answer writing that Graham, Scott, and Griswold do in the series.

[livejournal.com profile] mescott is giving page previews of SGA Legacy series book 5 "Secrets" over at her LJ. And I spotted this!
"Come on, Rodney," John said. "Can't you think of anybody to hit on besides Sam?"

"There's Teyla." Rodney stopped in the doorway as though the thought had just struck him. "She's hot."

"It took you almost six years to notice that?"
And, most strangely, I laughed and laughed and laughed...

Watching John sitting in the Antarctica chair for the first time, I'm reminded of one of my favourite scenes from the upcoming book "The Furies" by Jo Graham and a quote from John about how he uses the Ancient tech so easily: "And I totally let the city top."

*gurgles*

I hope they didn't have to take that line out.

Incidentally, "The Furies" is due out in late June - plenty of everyone, but the major agents in the storyline are Teyla and Sam and Jennifer. John spends a lot of time in prisons on his knees, Ronon has to be diplomatic, and Rodney is wonderfully cunning.

Rewatching this is a little heartbreaking. Ford! Peter! Sumner! Weir! They're so young! They're so innocent! So much hope!

(Ford just threw himself through the wormhole. OH FORD. And the lights are coming on of their own accord! And O'Neill just rolled a bottle of champers through the Stargate!)

...it's actually a little distracting, trying to work and listening to this at the same time.

But they're just about to meet Teyla!!

Writing [livejournal.com profile] sheppard_hc. Finishing stepbrother's wedding quilt today. Wedding is tomorrow, and we're going to China on Wednesday for the Chinese celebration (SIL-to-be is from China and not all her family/friends could make it).

I just hope it goes off without too much ickiness. (There's already ickiness thanks to stepbro's mum and bad blood and control freakism and...let's just say it's bad and leave it at that.)

Watched Thor last night, then went on to watch Star Trek (2009) for a bit, then back to Thor again to get the bits I missed the first time. But I still have the music from Trek 2009 in my head. Whoever wrote that music can bloody well write music, let me tell you. 'Earworm' ain't the least of it.

Anyway, after watching Thor, now I have bunnies entirely inappropriate to [livejournal.com profile] sheppard_hc. *grimace*

But at least the Avengers movie trailer now makes sense!

While hunting around the Tube Of You, I was very disappointed to find what looked like an awesome trailer for a Cyclops movie...only to realise it was made by a fan. *sigh* I know I'm kind of the only Cyclops fan in the universe (pre-2001 Cyclops, that is...I haven't read the storylines since then) but it would have been nice to see him portrayed as the leader-character he is in a movie about his origins. And the trailer looks like it was made by a Cyke-fan.

Yet another instance of me backing "the wrong horse" according to the dictates of fandom. I have a knack for picking them.

And, finally, [livejournal.com profile] jo_graham is asking for your thoughts on 'Allegiance' and specifically the situation as it stands in Sateda. If you've read the book, go forth and communicate!

Now, please excuse me, I have to write Sheppard and co. in the dark, on the run, and with John injured and in pain.

Two posts to my fannish journal in one day. I think there's something wrong with me...

According to [livejournal.com profile] jo_graham, SGA Legacy Series Book 3: Allegiance is (finally!) out in ebook format with Stargate Novels taking pre-orders.

I went and got an Amazon Kindle-for-PC app so I could get this. Out of all the books, Allegiance is probably the one that I'm the most sketchy about - I remember that it's got Ronon and Sateda and two of the most ZOMGWTFNOOOOOO battles in it, but the specifics are not so good. So I'm excited to read this one properly!

I'm excited to see the reactions among my friends for the next book, though - Avengers - totally my favourite because it's about the girls - Teyla, Keller, Sam, Jeannie - being awesome. REALLY AMAZINGLY AWESOME.

Allegiance is definitely for Ronon fans, though. And for people who like seeing Sam in Atlantis. And, y'know, the entire SGA team. Oh, and Rodney. OH RODNEY...

I suspect that there's not so much enthusiasm for SGA around my f-list these days, but the SGA Legacy series is a really good read, and thank heavens MGM finally pulled their finger out in the approvals process and got with the fans and the plans!

tl;dr: GO BUY IT NOW. NOW, I SAY!

CAN HAZ!

*squees*

Random quote:
There was a wild rustling and an eruption of movement. Winged things were beating against his legs and blundering against his chest and face, and he swung his P90 to track them by instinct, just barely managing not to fire. To his right, machine gun fire sounded like thunder, way too close on the narrow, icy balcony.

"Hold your fire!" he yelled. Feathers swirled around them in the wind. Hernandez lowered his weapon, already starting to look sheepish.

"Way to blow away those pigeons," Jacobs said. "Could have been a real threat to the city there."

Oh, and then later, Radek takes them to task for shooting at defenceless birds:
"Is it that they were threatening you in some way? You feared for your life if they pecked you with their little pigeon beaks?"

*giggles*

So, there goes the afternoon and evening. Except for the part where I have hockey training for an hour and a half... Oops.

eta: If this was the TV show, Hernandez and Jacobs would become the next Lorne/Parrish. Slightly hilarious.

I've ordered my copy of The Lost from Fandemonium Books and am looking forward to reading this one in the flesh!

I recommend ordering straight from the Fandemonium site, because Amazon (and other online book retailers) seems to have this thing about playing Silly Buggers with Fandemonium orders. Rather than wait several months for shipping, just buy it direct from Fandy and get it in the next couple of weeks!

things I adore about 'The Lost' (based on reading the drafts) - no major spoilers )

Ultimately, if Homecoming got the Legacy series up to speed, The Lost is where the series takes off. It takes a giant leap into the unknown and promptly drags the reader into the storyline, never letting go until the closing scene.

Clear the schedule for this one; because you won't want to put the book down once you've started!

"No, I cannot put up the shield! It's snow, not an alien invasion! Do you think we have the power to run the shield just because you don't want to get your feet wet? Yes, I am a Canadian!"

Why, yes, my copy of Homecoming arrived just this afternoon! Why do you ask?

A review of SGA Legacy: Homecoming by [livejournal.com profile] settiai that says it much better than I ever could!

No spoilers, so if you want to check out what the books are about, she's given enough for you to get a feel for the bits and pieces taking place, without giving away the entirety of the plot.

I'll post some of my own impressions once I get the book (it may very well be languishing in the mailbox up on the street - we haven't collected the mail in two days now) and read it through properly instead of piecemeal. But [personal profile] settiai's review is good for the no-longer-in-SGA fans who are wondering if they should.

(I say you should, but you might want to hear it from someone who isn't me...)

A new comm for discussion/conversation about the new Stargate Atlantis Legacy series written by Melissa Scott, Amy Griswold, and Jo Graham, and being published by Fandemonium Books.

I was going to make a big fancy banner for it, but, um, that time thingy got away from me amidst all the stuff I have due. (WRITE THE THINGS! WRITE ALL THE THINGS!)

[personal profile] sholio and I are co-mods, and with Death Game already out and the first book of the series 'Homecoming' shipping, we figured it was a good time/place to put this up for general discussion of all the threads and spoilers and whatnot in the books and series.

Starting with a discussion on Death Game. (I don't have the LJ link at this precise moment, although I can update this post if someone posts me the link on my DW journal: I can't see LJ from work.)

And of course, my verification process does not work and I have to call the Bank of SA between 8am and 9pm. *sigh*

Because I know at least one f-lister is fretting about Ronon's role in Legacy:

Jo Graham speaks about Allegiance and Ronon's plotarc.

It's not 'her' book - it's Amy and Melissa's book. Hence her quietness on the subject up until now:
It's very much centered on Ronon's questions -- who is he going to become? His youth was paid out in coin as a runner, and he is not the man he had ever imagined being at 31. The man he had meant to be, before Sateda fell, seems impossibly out of reach. But is that man dead? How much can be reclaimed? And at what cost?

[livejournal.com profile] jo_graham has another meta about Legacy up at her journal.

This one's about the lack of reset button and what it meant for the writers of the series and where they've taken the story arcs. (Specifically, they mention Ronon, so the Ronon-fans should probably go over and take a gander at what's in store.)

I can't say how much it means to me that these writers are writing the story-from-here in the Legacy series: because I've watched TPTB dismiss the characters who weren't white and weren't male, coding them as insignificant, stupid, and unimportant; I've watched the majority of fandom do exactly the same thing, in some cases worse than anything TPTB cooked up.

And all of a sudden there are writers who'll be writing not!John, not!Rodney, not!Jack, and not!Daniel as though they've got hopes and plans and places to go, things to be, actions to do, stories to influence?

Large portions of my f-list and dwircle from SGA are people who struggled with the fact that TPTB and fandom didn't really give anyone who wasn't John or Rodney a fair go.

In the Legacy series, they do. And it's an and, not an or. Neither John nor Rodney are ignored, dismissed, or left with one or two lines but nothing to do. It's not "reverse racism" at all: it's inclusion and acceptance. They're still valued, they're just alongside Teyla and Ronon, Sam and Radek, Woolsey, Lorne, Cadman, Carson and a slew of other characters.

So, really, if you struggled with the show's exclusion of anyone who wasn't John or Rodney, these stories are going to blow your mind. Of course, if you love John and Rodney, they're going to blow your mind as well.
