fandom: Hand of Isis - Jo Graham
title: Alexandria Leaving
summary: Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa will always choose Rome. But he returns to Alexandria to confront the past. And he doesn't come alone.
why: Because it seamlessly weaves the story into the history, into the warp and weft of the world that Graham has created. Because it's beautifully and lyrically done. And because that ending and the revelation to Agrippa! WOW. If you've read Hand of Isis and enjoyed it, I'm pretty sure you'll appreciate this.
fandom: The Shawshank Redemption
title: Bahamian-Style Mooring
summary: Five times Red got things in Zihuatanejo (and one time he didn’t need to get anything).
why: This fic is awkward and uncomfortable, and all the things you would expect for a couple of men who've spent over thirty years in prison between the two of them, and are basically parole fugitives. But it's also beautiful and nuanced and lyrical, cleverly narrated, and a little hysterical in at least one place with the tension and the uncertainty before the understanding hits. I can't even describe all the feels it's left me with.
fandom: Fast and Furious series
title: And You Welcomed Me
summary: Mia makes herself a new family.
why: Confession: I've never watched more than 30 mins of any F&F movie, and it was the one where Mia was married to Brian and had a kid and someone blew up their house. This is an AU which diverges somewhat earlier than that point, but the story is beautiful, centered around Mia, her house, and her faith and the development of a new 'found family'. It's a slow growing of connections, relationships, and reaching out and I really enjoyed the story.
fandom: Bourne Movies, Bourne Legacy
title: Sick Day
summary: They've been in one place now as long as they were ever on the run, and things look pretty good. And then Aaron, who doesn't get sick except that one time they did it on purpose? Aaron gets miserably sick. It kind of freaks him out.
why: Because it shows the aftermath - the dealing-with-being-a-normal-ish-person part that we don't really get to see (because even amnesiac!Jason wasn't 'normal' by any stretch of things). It's also pretty funny as Aaron starts to panic that he's regressing back to Kenny, and makes exit plans, while Marta reassures him that it's just the flu... There are occasional cameos from Jason Bourne, and the story leaves me with the desire to write what happened when Jason came down with this...
My gift is awesome:
fandom: Jupiter Ascending
title: Kiza Apini's Survival Top Ten: Essential skills for life, death, alien planets and dealing with the Entitled.
summary: Kiza Apini is deeply concerned about Jupiter's ability to make it through life unscathed. So deeply concerned, she's written her a survival guide.
why: Well, it's my gift, and it's great! Humour and drollness and dryness, and a teenaged girl Splice telling a newly-Entitled Recurrence about survival in the universe. Kiza's pragmatism comes through very clearly, as well as her fondness for (and perhaps some exasperation with) Jupiter. It put a big grin on my face.
And so are the two small and tasty treats (which I suspect were done by the same author):
fandom: Jupiter Ascending
title: with all the gifts
summary: “Your Majesty,” Stinger says, sinking down on one knee, “I have a daughter.”
why: It's pretty funny; especially the bit: “I’m sorry I don’t swing that way and also I already have a totally hot boyfriend,” is, Jupiter intuits, not the appropriate response.
fandom: Jupiter Ascending
title: immortalis
summary: Every recruit is taught this truth: that to serve the Aegis is to serve an ideal, a higher purpose.
why: Because the Aegis are not given Regenex, they are taught another line of thought, another wisdom. And Diomika Tsing lives by this wisdom and intends to die by it - until Jupiter Jones happens.
I'll post my Captain Hill and Pacific Rim gifts in the next post!
