Criminal Minds/SG1-SGA-SGU: Numbers Beyond What You Can Dial by [livejournal.com profile] raisintorte - gen, casefiles-ish
Summary: Four times the BAU helped Stargate Command catch a serial killer (and the one time it was just Aliens)
Why?: I don't even watch Criminal Minds, but I'd read a few of [livejournal.com profile] wojelah's Rossi/Prentiss fics and figured "oh, what the hell?" This is fun and intriguing - told rather than shown, but still good for the purposes of the fic and with a lovely dry humour to it as a 'real world' person gains insight into the Stargate 'verse.

NCIS/Hawaii Five-O: Hana Hou by [livejournal.com profile] littlesammy - NC-17, Steve/Ziva/Tony
Why?: I don't watch Hawaii Five-O either! But! The idea of Steve/Ziva/Tony piqued my interest, and I was intrigued to see how Tony would end up in a threesome. At least, one which involved Ziva and another man. And it works. It really, really works. Plus, Alex O'Loughlin is beyond hot, even in the sun instead of the shadows. :D

I got two awesome fics in my [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking:

Taking Care Of Business by [livejournal.com profile] friendshipper: SGA - John/Teyla
Hurt-comfort fic, with Teyla taking care of their enemies and looking after John. Definitely a kink of mine!

The Blacksmith by [livejournal.com profile] tassosss: Merlin - Arthur/Gwen
Gwen helping tidy up in the wake of 3.13, and talking with Arthur. I LOVE the conversations that people write about these two contemplating their relationship.

Sadly, that was it for the 'personalised' part of my stocking this year. I'm not sure when it became fashionable to post 'Merry Christmas' graphics as gifts to everyone in the stocking exchange, but I have to admit, I'm not particularly enamoured of the practice.

--

My [livejournal.com profile] sga_beya elf turned out to be [livejournal.com profile] artaxastra (oh yes, I spiesed you early on there, Artie!)

1. Cultural - a missing scene from the SGA novel Death Game, in which John concludes that he shouldn't be reading anything into it - it's probably just cultural...

2. Divided - a missing scene from the SGA Legacy book Homecoming, when Teyla goes back to New Athos for the first time.

3. Teyla's Angels - Team Teyla AU, kinda cute rehash of Charlie's Angels. I'm actually a bit mystified by this gift - it's really really not in [livejournal.com profile] artaxastra's style at all. But it doesn't indicate that it's an interim gift. So... (ETA: Teyla's Angels was apparently written by [livejournal.com profile] jeyla4ever - so thank you, Camy!)

4. Connecting Doors - John/Teyla, totally adorkable with John justifying why all his stuff is at Teyla's, although they're not living together or anything, oh, no!

5. Conspiracy - John/Teyla, Sam/Jack, and I am really hoping there is more to this, although I suspect that it wouldn't do to hold my breath for it!

[livejournal.com profile] sheppard_hc: The Path Less Travelled by [livejournal.com profile] wildcat88

Right, so it took me forever to write my Sheppard H/C fic, and then it took me forever to get around to reading this fic thanks to dodgy livejournal and ridiculously stressful work stuff.

But this was awesome! John/Teyla hurt/comfort, with John hurt and Teyla comforting him, action-adventure, survival, and interreliance, especially when their situation is over and they find themselves having to learn to cope without the other! And I'm delighted that the author included Athosian customs and integrated them into the fic! And that it's undeniably John/Teyla - no half-half measures.

I seem to be having a real year of being written for by gen ficcers. Which is fine, because I haven't met a fandom yet where I didn't end up wishing there were more people able to write action-adventure fics for my favourite pairings!

You know, I was just thinking this morning: it would be nice to write for a popular character/pairing again.

rec: world, put on pause by [profile] vixys

It's a zombie apocalypse, and this one isn't done for the funny. It's poignant and painful, Teyla and John h/c - emotional whump more than physical, although the physical is definitely there. It's beautifully written, both spare and rich. Sadness, anguish, pain, loss - all done beautifully. Warning for major character deaths, and gore and violence, and a lot of pain and no 'fixit' at the end.

--

I am seriously looking forward to the scene in the SGA: Legacy book 'Secrets' where Rodney sees Teyla for the first time after they haven't seen each other for a while. SERIOUSLY LOOKING FORWARD TO OMG.

--

Icons, banners, and whatnot to make. Have received a request for some smirky Rodney icons. On consideration, smirky Rodney expressions? Not that difficult to find. The problem is getting the good ones...

Shows to watch this coming long weekend (thereby requiring me to d/l them beforehand):
- Rizzoli and Isles
- Undercovers
- Merlin S3 (is it any good? ie. has Gwen turned up yet? Should I spoil myself, or should I stay pristinely unaware for the moment? Will I need hand-holding? Encouragement? Squee?)

I think, between those two, I should be well-covered. Anyone going to be around from 11am Saturday, AEST who's watching these shows who'll be available to chat?

Early Saturday morning, though, (ie. 7am onwards) was to be the Good Food Markets in Pyrmont. Goooood foooood.

SGA: Reciprocity by [livejournal.com profile] purple_cube - R
John was always told to play the long game. For once, it pays off.

A lovely sequence of scenes and developments in the John/Teyla relationship through the years.

SG1: Love Machine by [livejournal.com profile] artaxastra - PG-13
Sam isn't very good at Girls' Night. Vala thinks she's a stick in the mud, but when Sam tries to dissuade her, the results are both funny and disastrous.

In which Sam gets her foot in her mouth, and the SGC looks at Jack with new eyes. Daniel is not happy. At all.

God bless your ministry, Heartsong Church. You're in my prayers and thanksgiving this week for loving others as Christ loved us.

I got fic for my birthday!

Breaking The Stone by [livejournal.com profile] kristen999
John/Teyla and team fic and beautiful and brutal to boot!

I also got a Dutch cookbook from [livejournal.com profile] stef94 (who also was the first of us all to remember it was my birthday, because I sure didn't!) and a lovely little hand-knitted scarf from [livejournal.com profile] sjhw_tolerance.

Still slightly exhausted (the bags under my eyes are luggage-sized) but managing. I may need a nap this afternoon...

The cocktail party with RDA (sans cocktails, ironically) was neat; he was friendly and funny and the food was pretty good - delicious beef and salmon, the lasagne was better than most non-homemade I've tried, but I didn't try the chicken (looked too dry).

Anyway, con today! Sitting with Stef. Just about to head out for nommy things.

I am going to be like this for a few days at least. RL is decidedly un-squee-worthy right now, so I'm taking it where I'm getting it.

So there are 49 entries in the kinkmeme featuring John and Teyla or some combination thereof.

So far, 3 have been filled. And they are very very hot.

Go forth! Read! Leave a comment if you like (anon or non-anon).

The sound of someone in the office stifling a sneeze so it squeaks in their nose sounds exactly like the noise my cat makes before she hacks up a hairball. I automatically tense at that sound, because it usually happens at 4am in the morning, under my bed.

I find it hilarious that lightning hit a huge statue of Jesus outside a church in Ohio and burned it to a crisp. Actually, it's the debate about 'what message is God trying to send us' that I find truly hilarious. Maybe God is saying that, IDK, you shouldn't build a giant lightning rod of a statue out of flammable material?

Have finished Stealing Fire and it was very good! I liked Lydias and the other characters in 'Stealing Fire', the story was excellent, the drama well-paced, and the ending had a nicely lyrical feel.

The Numinous Trilogy: short thoughts on main characters )

Hah, and you would not believe the hunt we had in Galaxy Bookshop, Clarence St to find it! I checked the shelves. Not there. I asked the assistant, who said they had two copies in. He checked the shelves. He thought it might be in the new incoming books. (And he thought [livejournal.com profile] jo_graham was an excellent writer!) What followed was the sift through two trolleys of unshelved and unsorted books and then a careful scrutiny of the 'new releases' shelves...and we found it!

I was late for dinner with my parents and one of my mother's oldest friends. Oops.

Um. And that was last Thursday. I bought three books that night, and read through Kris Longknife: Audacious, Stealing Fire on the weekend. I am now halfway through Kris Longknife: Intrepid... ([livejournal.com profile] gwemegil, I think you'd like Kris, if you like Honor Harrington.)

I haven't been reading the HC Challenge lately. Or the f-list, even. But I ventured back onto the f-list and one of the challenge stories caught my attention:

Skin by Unknown
"An hour later, he found himself in his quarters, staring at his own reflection. The stench of antiseptic suffocated him, clinging to his clothes, his skin, his hair..."

Fiercely and ferociously recommended for fans of team, Teyla, and those who like stories of sacrifice.

If you want to read the others and pick one to vote for in the challenge (they're all good, but this one fits in my rec category), the voting post is here.

ETA: Having been PM'd about this by one of the contestants, I would like to say: this is not an endorsement for you to vote for that story. In fact, if you do not customarily vote in the HC Challenge, I would strongly encourage you NOT to vote now. I included the voting post link in an attempt to be fair to all the stories, even though my post was intended as a recommendation to read and not an endorsement to vote.

ETA2: My cousin's 3 year-old son was diagnosed with leukaemia a month ago. Less than a week ago, my uncle shaved all his hair off - both for Shave For A Cure and so J wouldn't be alone in his baldness as he went through the treatment. We received the photos of him and his grandson, and listened to him speaking on Chinese radio about it last night. That's the personal side of this story and why Skin touched me and why I felt the need to rec it now and not in a week's time when the competition ended.
