I put my name down on the SG1/SGA friending meme.
However, since my favourite SGA character is Teyla and my favourite SGA pairing is John/Teyla, I doubt I'm going to get any new friends out of it. The most-disliked character (or least-liked, anyway) and most-disliked pairing on SGA? Never let it be said that I in any way, shape, or form, run with the crowd! At any rate, I daresay that the other friending meme is going to be a bust for people like myself, who aren't McShep, Shweir, or Teynon (or whatever they're calling it).
I thought about running a friending meme for fans of Teyla: just for fans of Teyla. But I seem to be a bit of a black sheep in fandom these days. Hold the 'wrong' opinions. Say the 'wrong' things. Don't support the 'right' characters or the 'right' pairings in the 'right' ways. Hell, half my f-list avoids this LJ for one reason or another! Do I have any hope of getting total strangers involved in such an undertaking?
And even friends-of-friends would probably be a bust: the people I could count on to propagate this meme don't have large f-lists and aren't heavily involved in fandom. They might not even want to expand their f-lists.
Am I arguing myself out of doing this? Possibly. In fact, quite probably. But the fact is, a lot of Teyla's fans seem to have gone underground - and we who remain aren't exactly the cool kids. Now are we the uncool kids because we like Teyla, or is Teyla just liked by the uncool kids?
(No offence intended to any of my f-list reading this who are Teyla-fans. But you have to admit, we're not exactly a chatty, involved, super-popular bunch. Well, maybe you are! But I'm not.)
So what I'm basically asking is whether there's anyone reading this who'd pimp a Teyla-oriented friending meme, or knows of people who'd answer a Teyla-oriented friending meme run by me. (I think it's a valid question: there are at least three people I know of who are fans of Teyla but would rather slit their firstborn's throat than touch anything I'm involved in.)
It would be nice to expand the f-list with Teyla-fans (preferably productive ones) before the S4 spoilers start seeping out.

I was going to watch Heroes: Hiro tonight. But all I wanna do is sleep.

A large body of my experience is that the Shep/Teyla fans like Teyla, but they're more interested in her as part of a romantic couple rather than as a character whose relationship with John Sheppard has a sexually/emotionally attracted component to it.
As you've probably guessed, I'm a fan of the latter: Teyla as her own woman, and her interest in John/John's interest in her as part of her life, but not the whole of her being.
So while a whole bunch of Shep/Teyla shippers are all hoping for 'resolution' in Season Four, I'm just hoping for more Teyla. In fandom and in canon.

Well most of my limited experience of Teyla/Sheppard shippers is through Gateworld. At first, it was from those that would come around the bash Elizabeth (you can guess how much I liked /those/ people). But when I started being a bit more active as a Teyla fan, I noticed that none of them were really that active in the Teyla thread, except for one, who pops in once in a blue moon to say 'be more active' and then leaves. :p I've noticed that it happens with Elizabeth too though. A lot more fans, while they like Elizabeth, are more interested in shipping her with someone, usually Sheppard.
I'm a fan of Teyla as her own woman too. Although shipping the way I do helps with that. Elizabeth too, else she wouldn't have time to run the city, what with making out with all the guys and girls in Atlantis. :p
It sounds promising for Teyla. And I sorta get the impression that Shep/Teyla is getting closer to a resolution. To me, there hasn't been so much Shep/Weir this season (except for TRW), and they've tried to write in hints against Shep/Weir in the latter half of the season.

I know of at least one John/Teyla fan who is very 'unenamoured' of Elizabeth as a character; one is rather disparaging (I don't know if she's the same as the Elizabeth-basher you're thinking of). I love the character, but some of her fans are...scary. Yes, we'll just say "scary" and leave it at that.
Plus, she already has so much love that my head instinctively turns towards Teyla, who's ignored and dismissed and dissed. I have a soft spot for the underdog.
In all honesty, Shep/Weir was almost always plain old friendly interaction to me, except where it was specific to John's role in the show. John's role in TRW was that of "the hero" who was needed to rescue Elizabeth. He's played that role before - in "The Eye/The Storm", in "The Defiant One", more recently in "The Ark".
Actually, TRW annoys me for being a dead-end episode about Elizabeth. I'd much rather have had the boys stuck in some prison somewhere while Elizabeth (and Teyla, Lorne, and a couple of marines) had to negotiate them out of it - and possibly shoot a few things to get their point across. That would have been relevant to her role in Atlantis, her status as a negotiator and leader, and the expedition's standing in Pegasus.
See? Character. Not shipping. *sigh*
(Actually, I don't know how the Shweirs took TRW. I imagine they were happy-happy about it, though. I'd just rather have had an ep that was meaningful to Elizabeth in character-growth and her current situation as expedition leader.)

John is always the hero. That's his role. Although I'll admit, I prefer Elizabeth being the one needed rescuing than 'random chick of the week', cos it means more Elizabeth. :p
See, I liked TRW. I guess that I liked that in the end, it was Elizabeth, all alone, having to figure it out and get out of it. But I liked Progeny a lot for Elizabeth's role in that. That was a lot more relevant to her position, I felt. And the scene in Sunday, with Teyla and Elizabeth? So. Much. Love.
(I think that they were happy, it was pretty much the only episodes with any semi-shippy scenes in the whole season, really.)

That does seem to be the case. Neither Weir or Teyla seemed to be popular at the begining so the Weir fans went on the defensive. I assume they felt outnumbered so they became the loudest voices, trying to shoot down any negative opinion regardless of whether it was bashing or a valid opinon. I think a part of that mentality remains, which leaves a sort of love/hate divide. Some fans think Weir (and Torri) are perfect in every way and anyone who says different is a troll. Others hate her and there are a few in the middle who either a) like the character but still think there are flaws (writing, acting, whatever) or know that their Weir love/hate is just an opinion and everyone else is entitled to the opposite one if they want.
It's tough being in the middle. I thought I hated the character for a while until I started avoiding the miliant fans and realised I do like the character, it's just the obessive fans I can't stand.
The Teyla fans seemed to go in the opposite direction, most seem to avoid the haters or negative opinions and have their own little enclaves away from the general SGAdom.
Can you tell I'm fascinated by fandom and it's pyschology? :)
