Likes:
- female characters at the heart of the narrative
- interactions between characters, characters working together
- respectful romantic relationships
- stories of adventure and drama
- slices of life
- happy or hopeful endings
- character studies through interaction
- action/adventure/drama
DNW:
- pure scene setting with no interaction or dialogue by the characters
- character death
- cheating partners (but especially not to get the requested pairing)
- humiliation as humour
The list of DNW may contain things that I like perfectly fine in other fics, but I don't want in Yuletide.
You can also check my previous yuletide letters: 2018 | 2017 2016, or any of my other Dear Author letters through the years.
You don't have to include all the characters in my request in the story if they don't work there.
Belgariad/Malloreon - Eddings
Silk, Velvet
Not quite Baby's First Fantasy series (that was the Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander), but Teenager's First Fantasy series, certainly! I'd like to see more about these two after the Malloreon ends, working together in the Drasnian Intelligence Service. What kind of adventures do they get into with each other? Without each other?
If you've matched with me on both characters, I imagine that you don't mind writing their relationship. If you have a problem with writing intimate relationship between them, then you could focus on Velvet and how she ended up as one of the best spies in the business.
Dragon Prince - Rawn
Jihan, Pol, Sionell, Jahnev
This was pretty much Teenager's Second Fantasy Series!
I admit I always wanted Pol and Sionell to end up together and was mildly annoyed when they didn't - both in their marriages, and at the end of Skybowl. I would love to see their relationship developed and elaborated upon after the second series. What kind of pressures are brought to bear on Pol as the son-less High Prince to marry again to have a son? How do he and Sionell get along together in the wake of the war with the Vellant'im?
I'd like to see Jihan dealing with her diarmadhi blood and her discovery where it comes from. Does she melt down, the way Pol did? How does she comes to terms with it? What kind of adventures does she have growing up? Is her life golden all the way, or does something give her a sobering shock?
Does Jahnev envy the power that's all around him - an ungifted middle child in the midst of two faradhi siblings, the friends he grows up with? I love the cool-headed competent ones almost more than the fiery, heroic ones, and Jahnev seems to fit this with his seriousness with his mother and his restraint of Meig. I'd love to see more of this character.
Although most people feel the text implies a Jihan/Meig relationship, I like the idea of Jihan/Jahnev, so if you want to write something like that, I'd be over the moon!
Dragonriders of Pern - McCaffrey
Lessa, F'lar
I was never so disappointed as when I discovered that Dragonquest wasn't still about Lessa and F'lar. I adored Lessa's drive and ambition and how she and F'lar bounced off each other - both very driven and yet also quite solicitous with each other in the little things.
Perhaps a story about how they work out the little things as the first days of the Pass settle into a regular rhythm? Or their friendships with others - F'nor, Brekke, Manora and the others in Benden Weyr?
I did receive this last year in Yuletide, but I am a proponent of MOAR CAKE. That story was excellent and delightful - delicious cake - but I want MOAR!
Psy-Changeling - Singh
Beatrice Gault, Kit Monaghan, Julian Ryder, Naya Hunter
Beatrice/Kit is my whacko, completely off-the-wall pairing. He's a burgeoning alpha roaming the world, she's one of the few Arrow trainees who isn't struggling with the fall of Silence. I would love Kit being completely comfortable with Beatrice's Psy skills (after all, Sierra was one of his best friends), and Beatrice being amazed, shocked, and maybe a little dismissive that this young alpha feline is interested in little old her. With possible bonus Aiden and Zaira protectiveness!
If you don't want to do a pairing, then just friendship: Psy Arrow and prospective alpha, working together for Reasons. Fighting someone who's trying to take down the future alpha of one of the strongest and most powerful Changeling groups in the country? Helping each other out of a tight situation? Or, you know, talking about the people they know?
Finally, another 'future pairing': Julian/Naya. It can be the mating bond or not, but I rather like the 'not' option. Either way, the two of them trying to work out their relationship in the middle of their duties to Dark River is always delightful!
As always, these are just ideas to kick-start your writing. If they don't work for you, go with something that does.
I look forward to reading your story!
