Yuletide Treasure

The wonderful thing about Yuletide? You can find awesome fic for series that otherwise would be a nightmare to hunt down.

And the best thing? It's almost all good fic. Well-written, well-punctuated, nicely-characterised, entertaining fic written by people who might be good at the mass market, but who can do niche brilliantly, too.

I had a hankering for Tony/Lee from Tanya Huff's 'Smoke' series, and Yuletide gave in spades!

My favourites:

Five Ways Tony Doesn't Save The Day by Aderam

It's Never The Good Kind (Except When It Is) by Lucy Gillam

Smoke And Frost by delurker

But there are quite a few others about Tony. Interesting, there are almost none about Vicki in the book series. TV series, there seem to be plenty. I really did love the Henry/Vicki/Mike triangle in the books - it was beautifully done.

What I'm really hankering for right now, though? The third book in Melanie Rawn's Exiles trilogy: The Captal's Tower. Failing that, I'd settle for Cailet/Josselin fic, although that's going to be much much rarer than hen's teeth, since Melanie asked her fans not to write fanfic about her characters, rather to write their own characters instead.

Assuming that Melanie ever decides to write The Captal's Tower, it probably won't be out until 2014. And this when the 2nd book in the trilogy was published back in 1997.

Robert Jordan fans? You got nothing on Exiles fans. NOTHING.

I was rather put out when she announced that there would be no more books in the Dragon Lord/Dragon Star set. Meh.

I was a little disappointed - I want to find out whether Pol and Sionell get together! I want to see Jihan grow up to be a royal pain in the ass, and wanted to know what was special about Meig!

Honestly, I wrote my own set of 'happy endings' to the DP/DS series back around 1999-2000, but...yeah. Deleted them when I switched to my laptop in 2000...

I'm a fan of both Melanie Rawn and Robert Jordan (or at least I was, Robert Jordan just pissed me off by the time book 8 came out). I would love to have the end of the Exiles books. I loved them so hard.


I feel like turning into Godzilla and storming Melanie Rawn's neighborhood roaring, "Me want Captal's tower!"

I was reading them the other night, and I really really want to know what happens to Cailet and the Malerrisi. And Josselin - does he get together with Cailet or Taigan? Does Taigan ever get over Jored, and how does she feel about being the last Ambrai daughter - until she has her own?

I really want to see how Sarra develops in this new stage of life, and how she copes with letting her children go, what happens out in Lenfell, and...oh...so many questions and stuff...

Perhaps, to ease my pain, I might write an SGA/Exiles crossover.

"Five Ways..." made me insanely happy. There was another one I really liked in this year's batch too, but I'm blanking on the title. The one where Tony is sick and the entire production team, coordinated mostly by Amy, handles a supernatural problem while he's home in bed. Of course, it is therefore rather lacking in Tony, which cuts down on the Tony/Lee, although the whole thing with Lee being (forced to be) point man to protect him in his sickitude is sweet.

I'm also puzzled by the lack of the Toronto end of the book equation. I can understand it being essentially supplanted by the TV!verse, but I'm surprised there's not more stuff from the years before there was one.

It's interesting that all the fic seems to have a common theme about Lee being really in love with Tony, and Tony being worried about his impact on Lee's career.

I'm wondering if there's any fic that approaches it from another direction - where Lee is seen as the more insecure one. He's actorboy to Tony's wizardman, and while CB thinks his career is destined to be greater than playing to Mason's second fiddle, that doesn't always mean shit in the acting industry.

Tony's gotten his act together; what if Lee doesn't get his together? What if Tony decides he wants more than a pretty face? What about the way the media portrays sexuality - one is either gay or straight. For Lee to date Tony openly might be problematic for his career for a while...but imagine the kerfuffle if he fell in love with a woman again - would he be letting the (gay) side down?

And something in me wants to see someone writing Lee falling in love - the slow slide into caring about Tony, starting with knowing that Tony's got a crush on him, and moving to having a crush on Tony.

That makes sense -- we get nothing, or next to nothing, from inside Lee's head in the books, because of how the "revelation" is structured. (Not that it's a surprise to, like, anyone but Tony at that point, but still, we observe Lee from outside from necessity.) It does make it kind of surprising there isn't more fic to fill that in.

Oh, I know that feeling. The sequel to one of my favorite SF books just came out...twenty-one years after the first book was published.

(Though, to be fair, I didn't know the author was planning to do a sequel, so I haven't been on the edge of my seat waiting for it. So perhaps that's not quite as bad.)

But I still want this book. Eventually. I think the author is currently trying to finish a trilogy. Hopefully, when those are done, she'll go back to Captal's Tower.
