Just a few to get the ball rolling. I'm being methodical this year, going through them fandom by fandom.

--

The Adventure Of The Snow Leopard

It's a scene or vignette from Sherlock's POV. The formatting is a little odd, but the flow of Sherlock's thoughts is quite delightful - all those little thoughts neatly filed and organised, prepared for relevance. If you can get past the formatting, it's a very enjoyable fic.

--

a necessary conjunction

This feels more like the start of a longer casefic, and I'm a little disappointed that it doesn't. But it's still well done, intriguing and with a nice callback to The Adventure Of The Red-Headed League.

Three Anniversaries: A Love Story

The summary of this story says it perfectly. Not all love stories are about romance.

My Yuletide gifts - all, incidentally, to my Chinese Mythology request:

Goddess And The City by Fresne: the most ancient and terrible of goddesses let loose in the modern world.

Climbing Mount Kunlun by Salifiable: a walk through Chinese myth and legend for a faithful girl brings happiness and hope from the gods.

Four Seasons, A Dragon, And A River In Flood by Redsnake05: tales of the origins of a goddess.

All excellent fics, although I admit that 'Climbing Mount Kunlun' is my favourite for the adventure aspect.

My assignment was for athersgeo:

FANDOM: The Bourne Trilogy (movie)
TITLE: Galatea, Shaped By His Hand
CHARACTERS: Nicky Parsons, Pamela Landy, Jason Bourne; implied Nicky/Jason.
SUMMARY: The intersection of Jason Bourne's paths with Nicky Parsons and Pamela Landy. Some things change. Some things don't.

I also wrote two treats - one of them very short!

FANDOM: Young Wizards series by Diane Duane
TITLE: Metamorphose
CHARACTERS: Kit Rodriguez, Nita Callahan; Kit/Nita
SUMMARY: Last night, sitting on his bed with Nita's feet resting in his lap while they read through their manuals on their current errantry, Kit paused in his reading for a moment and realised he could feel her breathing in her skin.

FANDOM: Discworld series by Terry Pratchett
TITLE: Origami
CHARACTERS: Moist Von Lipwig, Adora Belle Dearheart; Adora Belle/Moist, D/s
SUMMARY: She looks at him, and he folds like paper.

notes on my YT fics )

On the list of "to write treats for", there were X-Wing fics and Discworld prompts, Tanya Huff's Smoke and Blood series, Melanie Rawn, Sanctuary, The Dark Is Rising and the Chronicles of Prydain.

Well, maybe next year?

Alas, for the four-day holiday is over and tomorrow I must return to the office.

1. [livejournal.com profile] seawench's family: one of these things is not like the other one... *gurgles*

2. I found it while looking for Sanctuary fic for Kate/Will. (Oh, man. I can just see myself getting into another fandom where I'm shipping the minor pairing. OH MAN.) It's not Kate/Will, it's actually Kate/Ashley and spans S2 and S3. the story needed mending by [livejournal.com profile] mad_maudlin (She wrote the hilarious SGA Santa story "Heteronormativity" a couple of years ago.)

3. Yuletide rec: Encyclopaedia Brown And The Case Of The Equitable Agency - the best part is that it's been updated for the modern times. It's like, small-town boy grows into modern world, but retains his small-town roots. Kinda Clark Kent meets Sherlock Holmes meets...well, Sheldon Cooper, really. (But he and Sally still need to get together - STAT!

4. Welcome Home - SGA Santa entry, John/Teyla, NC-17. Spoilers for The Return I&II, very well-written with hints of team and John/Teyla sexxing it up. It is awesome.

5. Four Christmases - Sanctuary fic, gen, and adorable.

Several recs:

Climbing Mount Kunlun - Chinese Mythology
"Not all over the table, venerable sir!" cried Xiao Zhen, but it was already too late.
This is one of the stories written for me: a young woman leaves her family and goes on an adventure through gods and legends to find a cure for her cousin. The use of Chinese mythology is wonderful, and I love that Xiao Zhen isn't pretty, but clever and hardworking and thoughtful.

Quartet - Diane Duane's Young Wizards series
Four Christmases in Nita's life.
Funny and tender and poignant by turns, Kit/Nita, futurefic. And Dairine starts a band! (No, really, she does!)

The Wizard's Oath - Diane Duane's Young Wizards series
In Life's name and for Life's sake, I assert that I will employ the Art which is its gift in Life's service alone, rejecting all other usages. I will guard growth and ease pain. I will fight to preserve what grows and lives well in its own way; and I will change no object or creature unless its growth and life, or that of the system of which it is part, are threatened. To these ends, in the practice of my Art, I will put aside fear for courage, and death for life, when it is right to do so -- till Universe's end.
They're not young wizards anymore, they're young parents. It's a lot more scary. And I love this story - a different kind of oath: 'for Life's sake'.

Carrying A Concealed Weapon (and other crimes to commit while being Adora Belle Dearheart) - Terry Pratchett's Discworld series
Adora Belle is arrested, Lady Sybil is there to help, or at least there to make the tea.
LOL AT THE FOOTNOTES! (Very important in a Discworld fic.) Grin at the golems! Observe the Watch trying to get out of a tricky situation! (They've just arrested Adora Belle Dearheart.) Now with extra swamp dragons!

The Ill-Advised Skeletal Exchange Program - Terry Pratchett's Discworld series
Death has apparently temporarily exchanged places with his pen pal, Jack Skellington. Susan is, understandably, Not Impressed (though the Death of Rats finds the whole thing hilarious)
I really really really want to see the sequel to this, wherein Miss Susan goes to town on Halloweentown. If you thought Christmas without Sandy Claws was bad, imagine Halloweentown with Death in charge and Susan on the warpath...

I only wrote one Yuletide fic this year. If you work out which one it is before the reveal and tell me, I'll write you a fic. :)

The wonderful thing about Yuletide? You can find awesome fic for series that otherwise would be a nightmare to hunt down.

And the best thing? It's almost all good fic. Well-written, well-punctuated, nicely-characterised, entertaining fic written by people who might be good at the mass market, but who can do niche brilliantly, too.

I had a hankering for Tony/Lee from Tanya Huff's 'Smoke' series, and Yuletide gave in spades!

My favourites:

Five Ways Tony Doesn't Save The Day by Aderam

It's Never The Good Kind (Except When It Is) by Lucy Gillam

Smoke And Frost by delurker

But there are quite a few others about Tony. Interesting, there are almost none about Vicki in the book series. TV series, there seem to be plenty. I really did love the Henry/Vicki/Mike triangle in the books - it was beautifully done.

--

What I'm really hankering for right now, though? The third book in Melanie Rawn's Exiles trilogy: The Captal's Tower. Failing that, I'd settle for Cailet/Josselin fic, although that's going to be much much rarer than hen's teeth, since Melanie asked her fans not to write fanfic about her characters, rather to write their own characters instead.

*sigh*

Assuming that Melanie ever decides to write The Captal's Tower, it probably won't be out until 2014. And this when the 2nd book in the trilogy was published back in 1997.

Robert Jordan fans? You got nothing on Exiles fans. NOTHING.

So, I haven't read very widely yet due to time considerations, but...

[livejournal.com profile] taraljc pointed me in the direction of Yuletide in the search for Ultraviolet fic. And I've been skimming. :)

Little Town On The Prairie: A Land So Wild And Savage
- Charles Ingalls and his pioneering spirit come through so exquisitely clearly in this story. And beyond Laura's childhood memories of her parents, there's a bittersweet adult note to the story.

Ultraviolet: Respice, Adspice, Prospice
- Frances and her struggle with what she's learned, what she's discovered, and her relationship with Mike. I haven't seen the whole series, but the story is good.

Brother Cadfael: The Manner Of His Return
- Philip of Gloucester, second son of Robert, returns from the Crusades, an older, wiser man, and goes to the friend who always understood him. I love that he finds Ermina instead of Olivier, and that there's peace of a sort waiting for him.
