01. what kind of soap is in your bathroom right now?
Liquid soap in a pump container. Goat's milk soap under the sink. Cussons Imperial Luxe (our mother was getting rid of some) in the sink, and possibly also in the shower (B2 uses it when she comes over on weekends). I'm pretty sure B1 has bubble bath or some kind of baby skin care option...as well as a 20L container of metho. (Apparently it helps with skin rashes, etc.)

02. do you have any watermelon in your refrigerator?
No. It's the middle of winter. But even in summer we probably don't.

So, apparently there is this thing called...fun!

How long has it been since I had fun on this journal instead of offloading my woes onto y'all? Or, you know, bitching about how our mutual canon got it wrong?

Okay, so let's do something fun.

Character Headcanon Meme

Give me a character & I will tell you
  • How I feel about this character:
  • All the people I ship romantically with this character:
  • My non-romantic OTP for this character:
  • My unpopular opinion about this character:
  • One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon:
  • my OTP:
  • my cross over ship:
  • a headcanon fact:

Pick any character you know I know. If you want to be adventurous, then pick one I don't know and...I will invent something. (Come on, it could get interesting! For a non-Whedon value of interesting.)

More fannish character meme:

Melisande Shahrizai and Jyn Erso )

I am in a cook-and-feed-people mood (still), and I have finally invited a couple of friends around for a BBQ lunch tomorrow. She's stay at home, and he's usually working from home, and I thought maybe they could take a lunch break at my place for a change of things? IDK. I probably should have invited them last week if I want them to come tomorrow. She doesn't check her phone often, and she's been a little disconnected during isolation.

Anyway, this morning I am cooking cinnamon scrolls. The recipe was for BBQ but I decided to do it in the oven instead because I'll do the BBQ tomorrow, one way or the other. And I'll do it before lunch and take the results to my mother's for lunch today. B1 has just gone off to her half-day of carer work, and who knows what B2 is doing.

Hopefully the scrolls turn out nice, though...

2. Coke or Pepsi? Coke. Although I don't mind either.
3. Do you own a gun? No.

I'm writing the next chapter of Wolf & Arrow - a.k.a. the MCU Psy-Changeling story that's been going for, oh, six years and I've written 3 chapters.

--

The mission to save the universe is up next, and I'm kind of terrified of it because OH SHIT NO totally happens. And the fallout is BIG.

--

I'm sort of skipping around the discussion of monetizing fandom (a.k.a. "'Asking for money via Ko-Fi/Patreon is like Multi-Level-Marketing! *reaction shot of WTF*") that's taking place on [community profile] thisweekmeta. There's a lot to take in there, but having been a multi-level marketing sponsor at one stage of my life, I can safely say that (at least for me) asking friends and fans in fandom for money - either one-offs in Ko-Fi or regular donations in Patreon - is entirely different to the selling that you do in a mlm scheme.

Anyway, I have plenty of things on my plate (including starting to sort out the study/my garden, because I may have to look at moving to Canberra for 6 months to get a job...

--

But I could totally go the character/question meme:
1) Make a list of fifteen characters first, and keep it to yourself for the moment.

2) Ask your f-list to post questions in the comments. For example: "One, nine, and fifteen are chosen by a prophecy to save the world from four. Do they succeed?", "Under what circumstances might five and fourteen fall in love?", "Which character on the list would you most want on your side in a zombie invasion?"

3) After your f-list has stopped asking questions, round them up and answer them using the fifteen characters you selected beforehand, then post them.

So I have my list all ready. Shoot me questions, please! I'll take them until the weekend is done in America.

  • -recall my favorite or least favorite parts
  • -possibly attempt to write an excerpt of it

A lot of my online existence has been fandom over the last twenty years and more - particularly the first ten years before things like Facebook and Twitter really took off. I think my first fandom might have been Melanie Rawn's Dragon Prince novels, although it's really a little bit blurry as to where 'fandom' actually began for me.

first canon I felt fannish about: So the answer for this is either 'Star Wars' (where I wrote a fic outline at age 10) or 'David Eddings' Belgariad, Malloreon or Elenium series' (where I talked about it with other girls at school and we waited desperately for the next book to come out).

first canon I wrote fanfic for: Apart from the Star Wars fic outline, probably the self-insert creative writing assignment for school where I wrote about myself and a bunch of friends meeting She-Ra and her friends, the crew from Mask, and ending up in medieaval times and in the future with spacemen. (There was time travel involved. I handwaved the actual travelling part and how, we just wandered through and started meeting people.)

thing I've been most obsessed with/fannish about without ever being even adjacent to its fandom: X-Files. I wasn't in the fandom, didn't watch the show, but around 2004, I become obsessed with Mulder/Scully fanfic, and read most of the old Gossamer archive over the course of six months.

first online fandom: I can't remember if it was an Australian email list for Terry Pratchett's Discworld books, or the bulletin board for Melanie Rawn's Dragon Prince series. (It might also have been the X-Men, circa 1997, but the timelines are all blurry twenty years later.)

online fannish trajectory: There was the Discworld emailing list, X-Men fanfic, and Melanie Rawn bulletin boards pre-2000. Buffy newsgroups around 2000, I think. In early 2001, I got into Stargate SG1, and discovered yahoogroups for those fandoms. Then came the era of LiveJournal and things really started taking off. Stargate SG1 was my main fandom until around the end of Season Six, when I became briefly obsessed with X-Files M/S fanfic. Somehow, I started getting into Justice League Unlimited - specifically the Diana/Bruce pairing, and a little bit of Angel - mostly on the strength of Faith's cameo in Season 4. I watched Firefly and Battlestar Galactica but couldn't actually get into the fandoms. Stargate Atlantis pulled me in, but not on the same lines that 99% of the fandom wanted to play and I began to realise that I was never going to hit the same high note that I did in Stargate SG1, simply because I was never going to like what the popular kids liked. I did a brief stint in Merlin fandom, then an equally brief stint in Sanctuary, then a really really brief stint in Harry Potter NextGen, before I watched the Avengers movie (having seen the previous movies but not really investing in them) and suddenly a character had me in her grip. Since then, MCU has been pretty much my major focus, with a year's foray into Pacific Rim before The Winter Soldier came out and I got sucked back into the MCU. There was a very small dip into Jupiter Ascending, and more recently a look-see into the Star Wars Sequels, Rogue One, and the DC Cinematic Universe, but I think I'm still mostly focused on the MCU right now. Or, at least, on the characters I most like in the MCU.

online platform trajectory: Email -> bulletin boards -> fic archives -> LiveJournal -> AO3 -> Dreamwidth -> Tumblr. About eighteen months ago I started pulling back from Tumblr and have pretty much stuck to DW.

first fic posted online: Something from the X-Men comic book 'Generation X' - long since lost to computer replacements and the morass of old and collapsed webpages...

fandom with the most fics written: According to AO3, Stargate Atlantis leads my way with 268 fics (MCU has only 255).

OTPs over the years: Maria Hill/Steve Rogers, Mako Mori/Raleigh Becket, Sam Carter/Jack O'Neill, John Sheppard/Teyla Emmagan, Wonder Woman/Batman, Harry Potter/Luna Lovegood, Kate Freelander/Will Zimmerman, Rose Weasley/Scorpius Malfoy, Lee Adama/Kara Thrace, Wesley Wyndham-Pryce/Faith Lehane, Scott Summers/Jean Grey. I WILL FIGHT YOU.

thing I feel closest to fannish about without having written a word of fic (posted or not): Hamilton? X-Files? I went through a two year phase of collecting BPAL scents, but that's actual money spent, so that probably counts as fannish.

my weirdest unfinished fic: I...don't know. 'The Right Hand Knows Not' perhaps? If it's unfinished, it's usually a serious story that got out of hand, leaving me unable to complete it.

my weirdest finished fic: I think it would have to be "The Zplknmni That Got Away" - It will dtlnddi svdrnna your kglffi!

fandom with multiple abandoned fics and no finished ones at all: None, I think. I usually have mostly finished fics, with a handful of unfinished/abandoned ones. Maybe Jupiter Ascending?

most upsetting research topic undertaken for fic-writing purposes: I don't remember, most likely because I blocked it out entirely.

oddest purchase for fannish research: 'Mirror To The Eye Of Heaven' - well, that's not actually fannish research. It was for a novel I was writing a few years back, and this book is about the father of the main character I was inserting into a rewritten Tang Dynasty China.

longest-held primary fandom: It's either MCU (6 years, although the last couple have been so-so) or Stargate Atlantis (5 years, but I was unenthusiastic about the last season, while getting very into the SGA Legacy book series, which is the closest thing to closure that the fans are ever likely to get now that Jason Momoa has hit the big time.)

geekiest possession/expenditure: I don't even know anymore. Probably one of the props from Stargate Atlantis. Oh, paying money for the dinner with Tori Higginsen, Ben Browder, and Michael Shanks at one of the Australian conventions?

single geekiest activity: Spending an entire weekend going to the USA (only 12 hours on US soil) just to go to a BPAL product launch?

fannish activity I've never done and would like to: Can't think of one. I've even attended an official movie premiere - Star Trek 2009 at the Sydney Opera House. (Incredibly lucky: I called as soon as the lines opened and somehow got three tickets.)

random geeky bonus: Fandom has made some very long-lasting friends for me: there's a woman I've known since 1997 who I met because of the Australian Discworld mailing list - we still have dinner occasionally. There's a woman I first met in person from the Melanie Rawn fandom back in 2000 (but we'd emailed back and forth with another group of people for at least a year before that) and we caught up at DragonCon 2015. And a friend who now lives in Victoria I first met in 2003 when we had a 'con' for a visiting BNF from the UK - we went around the room telling people our ages, and she was SO RELIEVED when she discovered that she wasn't the oldest by five or more years!

Hm. I lost a subscriber between the start of the week and today. Wonder what did it in the end.

hits and kudos meme for AO3 )

My stats don't generally change that much anymore: when there are hits in the thousands and kudos in the hundreds, it's difficult to get new eyeballs and appreciation beyond what's already been done.

Also: I finally uncoupled my name from authorship of 'Counterfeit and Counterpart' - not because it's not a fantastic work, just because I've always felt a little bit like a faker: I didn't write the story, I just did the art.

Reply to this post with "PORGS!" and I will pick three of your icons for you to talk about in your own journal, and then keep the meme going by making this offer on your post.

I made this one from the Incredibles, because Edna is a delight and a hilarity, and sometimes one just wants to answer something with that wild-eyed, over-enthusiastic, slightly manic delight...

This is my 'everything sucks' icon, which I mostly use on my own posts (I might occasionally use it when commiserating with someone else). The original icon I made had 'meh' in about 10% opacity, but I don't think this one does. (It might, and just not be visible. Can't tell.)

This icon is when commenting about something dramatic happening in fandom, or when I posted something that was going to piss someone off.

Copied from [personal profile] nrgburst:

I'm skipping entirely the TV fandoms section; I don't watch TV shows anymore, even on Netflix.

Your main fandom of the year?
'Fandom' is a tricky thing to define - is it what I wrote the most, what I watched the most, what I reblogged? Mostly I wrote MCU as always. I watched Moana at least four times. I'm most interested in where I could take the characters in the DCCU. But on Tumblr I suspect I most reblogged Wonder Woman and Rogue One.

Favourite male character of the year?
Most-written was Steve Rogers. Most-liked is a toss up between Cassian Andor or Steve Trevor.

Favourite female character of the year?
Most-written: Maria Hill (of course). But Diana Prince was probably the new favourite, and I have a great fondness for Jyn Erso.

Your biggest squee moment of the year?
The Wonder Woman movie. THE WONDER WOMAN MOVIE. That it was enjoyable cinema, and rocked and she kicked ass and I came out of it not feeling let down. SUCH A GOOD FEELING. And while it's not the thing to like Justice League, I felt kind of the same way about that movie, too.

The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?
A specific corner of the MCU - Thor: Ragnarok. I'd like to join in, but I've seen at least one person who's badmouthed me in public hanging out there, so I don't think I want to get into the fandom.

Your biggest fan anticipations for the coming year?
Black Panther. There's not really anything that will reconcile me to the MCU anymore now that they've more or less written Maria out of it (I'm still salty about Civil War), but if there was, Black Panther might be it. The Last Jedi looks like an enjoyable fannish ride, though.

Your favourite films you watched this year?
Wonder Woman (Truth, Justice, Wonder). Rogue One (You can always resist). I enjoyed Thor: Ragnarok, Justice League, and watching a few 'backlog' movies, like Moana and Zootopia.

Your favourite book read this year?
I really liked 'Hate To Want You' and 'Wrong to Need You', both by Alisha Rai. Also, 'The English Witch' by Loretta Chase, and 'The Broken Way' by Ann Voskamp.

Your favourite album or song to listen to this year?
Uh, Spotify? Actually, I made a group of songs that I call 'M&P Conn-Pod Playlist' and which are suitable for a range of my activities from writing to quilting to singing in the car...

Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
Don't really have one, I think.

Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
That more people didn't enjoy Justice League. I was hoping to find people who were inclined to enjoy it and be fannish about it, but there aren't too many of those around here.

The most missed of your old fandoms?
Honestly, right now, I'm seriously missing Stargate SG1, largely because of the friends I made in it all those years ago. The downside is that the world is not the same and we are not the same people we were then, and some of the changes are greater than can be overcome just by a common fandom.

Quantifying fandom contributions for the year: (according to Ao3)
Fic: 46
Words: 136580

The 46 includes several stories that were started in previous years but only added to this year. There'll be at least three more fics before the end of the year (three assignments) and probably more as I try to write treats for Yuletide and Fandom Stocking and assorted other stuff.

So I've just posted 800 fics to AO3 according to my Works page. However, the number is probably closer to 805 - I have a handful of fics in Anonymous comms, and a few which are as yet unrevealed.

1. What’s your first and second most common work ratings? Any surprises?
General Audiences (317)
Teen And Up Audiences (291)

Nope. No surprises there. I write a reasonable amount of smut (comparative to my output) - Explicit rating has 95 fics, and Mature hs 92, although I suspect 'Mature' is mostly for torture and edgy situations. Weirdly, 5 fics aren't rated at all. Now I'm curious about those...

2. What’s your most common archive warning? Least common? Do you consider yourself an adventurous writer?
No Archive Warnings Apply (677) is the highest while Rape/Non-Con (13) and Major Character Death (13) are tied for the lowest.

I don't think 'adventurous' is defined by the ability to write things with warnings on it. I mean, anyone can be a shock jock if they just want to push boundaries. Writing things that challenge characterisation, that make people think of situations in new ways, that add new perspectives to situations that might not have otherwise been done before - that's my idea of 'adventurous'.

3. How many fics have you written in each relationship category? Is this more accidental, or do you have preferences?
F/M (433)
Gen (402)
M/M (13)
Multi (12)
F/F (10)

I'm het and gen pretty much all the way. It's both a preference, and a deliberate choice to write respectful relationships between men and women as a model - to pave the way forward, so to speak.

4. What are your top 4 fandoms by numbers? Are you still active in any of them, and do you tend to migrate a lot?
Stargate Atlantis (266)
Marvel Cinematic Universe (222)
The Avengers (Marvel Movies) (88)
Pacific Rim (Movies) (65)

Still active in MCU/Avengers, but that's about it.

I started tagging things with 'The Avengers' before the MCU tag really got on. If I merge The Avengers and the fandom in fifth position (Captain America movies) into the MCU tag, then the next fandom down is Stargate SG1 with 47 fics on AO3. I'm sure I have more elsehwere as yet unposted, though.

5. What are your top character tags? Does this match how you feel about the characters, or are you puzzled?
Teyla Emmagan (223)
John Sheppard (207)
Maria Hill (206)
Steve Rogers (167)

Yeah, that's pretty much par for the course, I think. The only reason Maria slowed down was because she wasn't in Civil War and doesn't seem to be in the next Avengers movies, so I haven't had quite as much impetus to write her. Mostly AUs at this point. Ah well, a couple more fics, and she'll have surpassed John.

6. What are your top 2 most used additional tags, and your bottom 2? What would happen if you combined all 4 of these into a fic?
Top 2:
Friendship (173)
Angst (121)

Bottom 2:
Love (37)
Vignette (36)

And combining all four together is pretty much like shooting fish in a barrel. Then again, the Vignette tag (which I use for something short - usually <1000 words) could prove challenging.

7. How many WIPs do you have currently running on AO3? Any you don’t plan on finishing?
According to the AO3 count, I have 18 incomplete works (Complete count = 782, Total works count = 800). However a search for 'Work In Progress' as an additional tag only nets 5 stories - all of them big MCU epics. *sigh*

downright complicated: or the MCU sedoretu fic. I'm waiting on the next chapter to come back from the beta and kind of dreading it, TBH.

Always On Your Side: or the one where Maria and Pepper make off with Bucky from the CIA facility in Berlin.

A Practical Acquaintance With Bees: or the story of Maria and the Winter Soldier where the next, unwritten, unplanned chapter goes seriously off-canon...

Sokovia, Suburbia, and the Senate: or the one where Steve comes to stay with Maria's family and learns a lot about himself and Maria at the same time.

The Right Hand Knows Not: or the original idea for a Practical Acquaintance With Bees, which, again, got too epic to handle (and got seriously derailed by TWS).
