No Ever After (10311 words) by tielan
Fandom: Marvel Cinematic Universe
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Maria Hill/Steve Rogers, Wanda Maximoff & Steve Rogers & Natasha Romanov & Sam Wilson, Wanda Maximoff/Vision (background), James "Bucky" Barnes & Steve Rogers, Sharon Carter/Steve Rogers (temporary)
Characters: Steve Rogers, Maria Hill, Natasha Romanov (Marvel), Sam Wilson (Marvel), Wanda Maximoff, James "Bucky" Barnes
Additional Tags: Post-Captain America: Civil War (Movie)
Summary:

There is no 'forever after' for Steve anymore, there's only the now.

This is what happens when your big fics require smaller fics that detail little events that happened earlier in the timeline in order to keep them straight in your own head. If I'd thought about it properly, then I'd have also included discussions that I used for flashbacks in 'Atlas Stumbles' - the post-IW fic with Steve and Okoye. Ah well.

Starting to dump my old MCU/Avengers fics. A handful of people are still reading.

title: Still Terrifying
summary: They agreed to terrify each other. Maybe just not quite this way.
rating: PG13
tags: Maria Hill/Steve Rogers
notes: Was a snippet from a sequel to A Woman Of Edges; never got finished.

title: One Does Not Simply Walk Into Mordor
summary: Orcs might be preferable. But one does not question Natasha Romanoff when she has taken it into her head to go on a road trip.
rating: PG13
tags: Maria Hill & Pepper Potts & Natasha Romanoff
notes: Was going to be a girls' road trip through the midwest, post-Avengers movie. Never got beyond this first snippet.

There'll be many more snippets if I can dig them out and get them to a decent place.

Once again, I didn't sign up for Remix. I did, however, pick up a pinch-hit at the end:
title: My God, It's Full Of Nerds (the It's Sci-Fi All The Way Down remix)
summary:Do not argue with nerds, for you are unschooled in knowledge and taste delicious with pedantry. (Or: "Steve Rogers and the Science-Fiction of the Twenty-First Century")
rating: G
characters/pairings: Steve Rogers, Maria Hill, (cameo Pepper and Tony)
tags: Humor, Geekery, Friendship, Fluff
notes: inspired by The Ultimate Question (a.k.a. Steve Really Needs New Friends) as a pinch-hit for [archiveofourown.org profile] LadyMerlin in the [community profile] remixrevival.
I'm pretty happy with this one.

I wrote two fics for [community profile] smutswap:

My assignment was for [personal profile] geckoholic. It was going to be a series of smutlets, except the first one kind of blew out (hur-hur) and then I ran out of time, as per usual. So instead of starting at vanilla and moving on to further kink, it kind of ended up staying at vanilla.

Presumptuous - MCU: Maria/Steve - First Time, Woman On Top
Maria Hill's opinion of Steve Rogers in bed: "A+ partner, would fuck again."

After I finished my assignment, I went looking for more Maria/Steve prompts, and found a couple of others. This one ended up being for both [personal profile] geckoholic and [archiveofourown.org profile] catandmouse10 because they asked for different prompts but it kind of all ended up in the same fic.

What Happens In Asgard - MCU: Maria/Steve - Established Relationship, Secret Relationship, Wall Sex, Sharing A Bed, Drunk Confessions, Fucked Against A Window, Clothed/Naked.
Asgard isn’t interested in the sex lives of its royalty, and even less in the sex lives of its royalty's visitors...

The second one is technically set after CA:CW but it's a very technical consideration.

My [livejournal.com profile] shipswap assignment was, again, MCU: Steve/Maria. (Hey, I'm not complaining. I just wish other people would write them, too.)

Recipient was [archiveofourown.org profile] sbarmarj and I admit, I used something I already had since she hadn't given me any prompts!

Building Blocks - MCU: Steve/Maria
Building a relationship, note by note.

This is also the next installation of Steve/Maria fic-tag that I've been playing with [livejournal.com profile] geckoholic (man, you got a lot of Steve/Maria fic out of me this round) whose prompt was Post-It / Sticky Notes from my [community profile] cottoncandy_bingo 2014 card.

And I picked up a pinch-hit in the first round of defaults for [archiveofourown.org profile] lynndyre:

any port in a storm but only one place to call home - Persuasion: Anne Elliot/Frederick Wentworth
Something in her holds him fast, like the last line connecting a ship to shore.

...and then I saw a prompt by [archiveofourown.org profile] Rina which I ended up gifting ahead of the story reveals because the only fics being posted on the Maria/Steve AO3 feed were those not-fics by the person who's basically tag-trolling for hits and I wanted something decent on there.

Snow Falling On City Blocks - MCU: Steve/Maria
He glances at the woman beside him and wonders. “What do you see?"

Hill glances at him, a startled blink of blue eyes beneath ridiculously long, curling dark lashes. “Cover. Concealment. Cold.” The smile flickers sideways. “And, apparently, alliterative tendencies.”

Finally, about two hours before I went off to see CA:CW, I wrote metafic:

Pinky And The Brain - MCU: Maria & Pepper
"You know, if we’d been in the movie, and the script had been written by a woman who actually likes women, it would have been very different."

Yeah, it's been a busy couple of weeks.

...and with that, I am at 699 works on AO3!

Um. Wow. I was only at 600 in February last year, with No Fate. Where has the time gone? (How the hell did I manage to write 100 fics in a year - some of them rather long!)

Thankfully May is a quiet month (for a given value of 'quiet').

I have To The End Of Love (post-CA:CW fic) on the brain, which I just need to shut up the inner editors and write. It won't be very good, I think, and there'll be holes that I could drive a helicarrier through, but I want it out of my head. OUT OUT DAMNED PLOTBUNNY!

And I have a feeling I'm not going to make the [livejournal.com profile] wipbigbang. That's supposed to be finishing a practical acquaintance with bees and unless I'm really crazily inspired in the next couple of weeks (well, the next week) I don't think I'm going to make the snippet deadline...

Are you involved in [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon? Maybe think about producing something and posting/linking there?

I've gotten a bit distracted in the last day - haven't been able to put up the post for the LJ and DW comm - maybe at lunch today. And I have to finish off the Day10-Day14 graphics.

So damn tired.

Some fic:
Pre And Post
MCU: Maria/Steve
There are places Maria would rather be at 0200 hours – such as with Steve, and places she would much rather not be at 0200 hours – such as her office. Tonight, she’s managed both which should technically balance it out. Technically.
Next chapter in my Meeting Halfway series, which has been on a break for 18 months...

The Goddamned Batman
MCU: Maria, Melinda
In Maria's opinion, a prank that requires someone else to clean up after you isn't a prank; it's a dick move.
For Halfamoon Challenge - Women Being Awesome

Unexpected And Deadly
PacRim: Mako Mori & the women
She remembers her mother dampening her hair, then brushing it out to fall just so.
For Halfamoon Challenge - Choices

Gardens And Guys Next Door
MCU AU: Maria/Steve, Natasha
Maria personally finds it awkward to be perving on the neighbour.
The sequel to "Men and Mailboxes"

Trouble In Twos
MCU AU: Maria, Tony, Peggy, Angie
There’s a kid sitting on the stairs of the DC brownstone when Tony rocks up. Maybe six or seven, in a pink Rainbow Brite tee-shirt, clutching a Cabbage Patch Doll under one arm. But her expression is decades older – an old lady staring at him out of a little girl's eyes.
Someone wanted an AU where Tony and Maria grow up as siblings.

Pacific Rim Secret Santa Gift!

title: living in a fallen home
summary: Their instant connection pushed Raleigh into focusing on all the things he and Mako share, all the places where they align. It's only with a little time, and distance, and a lack of wires fused into both their brains, that he learns where they deviate from one another.
why: This was a pinch-hit for me when my author couldn't get her assignment in due to Life Issues (and let me know ahead of time as well as promising me a fic in Jan). So it's short but sweet, a few little slices of life and dealing as they work out how they're going to relate in a post-kaiju world.

In contrast, my Captain Hill Secret Santa gift is intense:

title: this of all nights
summary: In the weeks after Ultron, Steve and Maria find comfort in each other, only to find themselves on opposite sides of the Sokovia Protocols.
why: No quarter given in this fic; the harsh and bitter truth of love and war. It's not an easy fic to read, but it's an powerful one, and the ending is as much interlude as it is completion. The characterisation is amazing - particularly the harder side of Steve and the sharper side of Maria. We don't always write those in Captain Hill fic because it's not easy to write them in a relationship like that - it takes a fair bit of emotional maturity to both conceive it and accept it, but this has been done brilliantly, with their emotional need balanced against the things they believe are right and the choices they have to make in the situation.

Two fics for [livejournal.com profile] not_primetime:

TITLE: Keep Calm And Curbstomp HYDRA
SUMMARY: Maria Hill is not known as a people person.
TAGS: Maria Hill, Character Study, Post-Cap 2, Maria Hill is a BAMF.
NOTES: My assignment for [personal profile] rmc28 (who reliably asks for Maria). A sequel of sorts to 'Keep Calm And Carry On'. The 3rd story in the series will be post-AoU and is presently called 'Keep Calm And Manage Mayhem'.

TITLE: In The Shadow Of Superheroes
SUMMARY: Against the bright screens displaying the work of one of the most sophisticated – and secret – computer networks Fury could slide under the books at S.H.I.E.L.D – she looks small and dark, the merest shadow player in a game big enough to swallow the world whole.
TAGS: Maria Hill, Clint Barton, Laura Barton.
NOTES: A treat for [profile] jena Another of my attempts to level Maria's absence from the MCU Civil War. (Basically, you're going to get a lot of fic out of it, because I want as many of these ideas out before I get fully and finally jossed (russo'd?) by Cap3.

TITLE: Close Enough
SUMMARY: His job, then, is to put her on notice: message received, mission accepted – and then to return fire in kind.
TAGS: Maria/Steve, Meet Ugly, Sexual Innuendo.
NOTES: Tumblr has a 'meet ugly' set of prompts, which I guess are the counterpoint to the "meet cute" where couples bump into each other doing cute things like walking dogs or ordering coffee. As [livejournal.com profile] alphaflyer pointed out, they're not exactly ugly meetings, just a little less cutesy. Yes, [livejournal.com profile] geckoholic, you are on a site where people fuck fruit...

TITLE: Reborn of Ice And Fire
SUMMARY: The first time, Steve dies in ice. The second time, he dies in fire.
TAGS: Steve Rogers, Character Study, Steve/Maria, Maria Hill, Bucky Barnes, Natasha Romanoff
NOTES: Oh, look, it's another fic of Steve & Maria in Civil War... (I'm not kidding, you're going to be tired of them by the time the movie actually gets here.)
tielan: (AVG - maria)

After Peggy Carter and Natasha Romanoff, Maria Hill is now the female character who's had the most on-screen interaction with Steve. spoilers )

For canon? A marginal and unimportant detail.

For fandom? That's pretty big. :)

Where I've Gone Before
Steve had a mentor when he was young, a man he called Uncle. Uncle was mysterious and rarely turned up more than once every few months, but he was also generous, a good listener, and respected Steve's opinions.

It was a long time before he found out he was Uncle.

This is not a fic that most people are going to read off the bat, but I think that the Steve-fans - and particularly the history!Steve-fans will like it. (Disclaimer: the author is a friend, and I beta'd it.)

Three options for [community profile] unconventionalcourtship:

1. Wife For A Week: High profile businesswoman Maria needs a fake boyfriend to keep Wade Wilson at bay while negotiating a buy-out; Pepper Potts suggests Steve Rogers, a friend who's in need of a distraction. On the surface, it seems like the perfect solution, and at first it all works without a hitch. Unfortunately, there's such a thing as being too successful: things are going so well that their friends start believing the lie...and if they're not careful, they might start believing it, too!

2. Nothing But The Best: Returning to New York after a long stint undercover, Maria Hill discovers her connecting flight has been cancelled leaving her stuck in the city. Attacked on her way to the hotel, a stranger steps in to help - unnecessary, but appreciated. Usually, she'd just say 'thanks' and walk away, but something about him catches her interest. He's struggling with huge life changes, she's looking for a connection - if only for a night. And then next morning, Maria Hill walks into the New York office and discovers her one night stand was with SHIELD's hottest new property: Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America.

3. Down On The Farm: Steve Rogers has been sent to 'rusticate' out at Phil's Farm while the music scene cools down after what should have been a harmless fling went very badly south. He expects to be worked hard and he's not afraid of that, what he doesn't expect is to meet a childhood crush. Maria Hill has been out of the music scene for nearly ten years, after the rock'n'roll lifestyle killed her cousin - the other half of their pop duo. She doesn't expect one of the current music scene's hottest stars to remember her; she also doesn't expect to fall in love with him. But she's not about to try to keep him down on the farm, and she has no wish to go back to Paree...

TITLE: The Meeting Of Your Sparks
SUMMARY: It had been a while since he felt a warmth like this in his belly, but he remembered how it felt to be attracted to someone in his gut – that pull of interest that was one part sexual, one part personality, all parts desire.
CATEGORY: Mako/Raleigh, Fluff, AU, a little bit of angst
RATING: G
WARNINGS: None
NOTES: Written as the opening salvo of a fic war between myself and [personal profile] quigonejinn for Pacific Rim fic. Her follow-up was "The One Where..." which means the ball's back in my court. So do I work off 'sparring' or do I go further off the AU track? Or both?

TITLE: Feels Like Home To Me
SUMMARY: In the middle of the night she crawls into his bed, and not a word is said.
CATEGORY: Steve/Maria, fluff, very short
RATING: G
WARNINGS: None
NOTES: Another in the "Meeting Halfway" Steve/Maria series. Not compliant with anything after The Avengers.

TITLE: Pretty Cunning
SUMMARY: Nick may be a suspicious bastard, but he's not an unforgiving one.
CATEGORY: Nick Fury & Maria Hill, familial relationship, post-CA2
RATING: G
WARNINGS: None
NOTES: For Father's Day. And because I felt I had to say something about AoS and the Director of SHIELD situation.

[personal profile] ladyscribe? I think you're going to have to tell me what theme I should pick for the next Steve/Maria in our fic war. I'm sorry, I'm just all over the shop right now.

And, of course, right when I'm busiest, the old profic bunnies come a-hopping. I kicked a male character out to make space for another female character, and apart from now allowing the 5-book series to actually pass Bechdel, it also changes the dynamics between the quintet a little - which isn't a bad thing, I think. The danger was always going to be that Renee was left out in the cold as 'the girl', but with Tiana now part of the five, there's less chance of that.

Now I just have to stop my brain from trying to simultaneously write the adult urban fantasy novel series that feature them after they've grown up...

Fandom: MCU
Title: Steal My Kisses
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: None
Relationships: Steve Rogers/Maria Hill
Additional Tags: kisses, Developing Relationship, Missing Scenes
Summary: He's ninety-five, not dead.
Notes: Basically 'five times Steve Rogers kissed Maria Hill' which was requested of me by someone long before CA2 came out, but which only gained plotbunny traction after the movie. I had four...well, actually, I had five, but I didn't like the fifth quite so much. And then I wrote this silly little PDA excerpt...and it got a good reception on tumblr and fit at the end of the others and... This is how things happen around here...

Placeholder for the moment - there will definitely be more!

Okay, so I love these fandoms and I love the female characters of these fandoms (more specifically, I really really love one or two female characters in these fandoms: the others are nice but these ones tug my heartstrings) and I would adore it if you wrote something that is centric about these characters.

likes and dislikes - Agents of SHIELD, Sanctuary, Angel, Pacific Rim, Captain America )

TITLE: Nothing To Lose
SUMMARY: "It's one of the traditional rituals of manhood," Natasha observes as they're sparring. "Kill a man, fuck a woman."
CATEGORY: Steve/Maria, Steve & the Avengers (friendship)
RATING: NC-17 for explicit sex
NOTES: Back in 2012 the LJ comm [livejournal.com profile] virgin_america did a 4th July challenge. You can guess what for. I had plotbunnies, but I didn't actually start getting into the story until a year later, and then (after watching Pacific Rim) I kind of lost impetus on the writing. It's finally complete and I can get my ass back to the [livejournal.com profile] wip_bigbang. (Maybe.)

One 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' related, one general MCU. Both on AO3.

MCU
Title: The Right Hand Knows Not
Summary: "S.H.I.E.L.D isn’t about heroes saving ordinary people, Gibson – or it shouldn’t be. It’s about protecting Earth from anything and anyone who would attack it – and sometimes from ourselves."
Rating: PG-13
Characters/Pairing: Maria & Steve, with cameos from Natasha, Barton, Fury, and assorted others.
Notes: ABANDONED WORK - UNFINISHED AND DISCONTINUED. Basically, this was the be the sequel to 'Give A Girl A Moment' but CA:TWS (and IM3) kind of threw all the plotbunnies out of whack. It's not even going to reach the bit where Maria thwarts an assassination attempt against Fury, unfortch. I was kind of looking forward to writing that sequence. Oh well. The bunnies snooze; the bunnies lose.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Title: Hidden In Plain Sight
Summary: Nobody notices a woman who walks one step behind a man.
Rating: G
Characters/Pairing: Maria Hill & Nick Fury
Notes: SPOILERS for CA:TWS. Missing scene and character thoughts from the movie. And this is just the first of many plotbunnies that have arisen from seeing it...

From [livejournal.com profile] pentapus: Steve Rogers and strong women

I asked for Steve/Maria and she said she didn't see it. But this art is exactly how I see the pairing!

And then the rest of the courtship involves Steve persuading Maria that he doesn't bite in a Steve Rogers kind of way...

I'm not very good about posting fic to LJ anymore, mostly because I don't think too many of you are here for the fic.

Anyway, four fics - one of them a WIP, three in a series (you don't have to read the others in the series, but it helps). All at AO3.

These three are in the 'Meeting Halfway' series - 30 Days of Steve/Maria OTP (I took a break over Christmas).

TITLE: The More Loving One
SUMMARY: There have been moments since that night out with Clint, Natasha and the other agents – and particularly since the night in Vegas – when Steve feels a little like Maria Hill's dirty little secret. Sleeping with a fellow S.H.I.E.L.D. agent is perfectly acceptable, but fucking an Avenger? No, Maria wouldn't do that.
RATING: PG-13
TAGS: Angst, Breakup, Drama, Issues
NOTES: You'd think that the challenge 'wearing kigurumis (animal suits)' would be funny, right? AHAHAHAHAHAHA. Yeah. No.

TITLE: Some Of Us Hover While We Weep For The Other
SUMMARY: The prince ends up with the princess - that's how it works in all the fairytales, right? He doesn't end up with the bitch - and Maria's never been anything but the bitch.
RATING: PG-13
TAGS: Angst, Getting Back Together, Drama, Kissing, Making Out, Trust Issues
NOTES: Day 12 - 'making out'. You know, I can do angst really easily. These guys will angst at the drop of a hat. But happily ever after with kittens and flowers? Is bloody difficult.

TITLE: Gathered Contrasts
SUMMARY: Steve wants to draw her like this – half-dressed, working, eating – intimate and aloof, professional and sensual, focused and casual, exquisitely beautiful and utterly businesslike – all the contrasts of Maria Hill gathered into a single pose.
RATING: NC-17
TAGS: Relationship, Food Sex, Porn Battle
NOTES: I think those three tags pretty much say everything that needs to be said. Day 13 was 'eating ice-cream' and, yes, it gets eaten. The Porn Battle XIV prompts that I used were lick, food, collar, undress.

--

Another fusion AU. This time with Nalini Singh's Psy-Changelings universe. Be warned, it's a WIP and I don't know how long it will take since it's not a priority - just a fun diversion.

TITLE: The Gathering Clouds
SUMMARY: Maria had always known that someday that the shambling, soulless creature that returned from Rehabilitation would be her – used one too many times, broken beyond fixing. She'd accepted the eventuality of that end for herself. But for Phil and these children, whose crime was merely to challenge the Psy Council's preconceptions? No. Not while she had breath.
RATING: PG-13
TAGS: Alternate Universe - Fusion, Psy-Changelings, Alternate Universe - Psychics/Psionics, Alternate Universe - Werecreatures, Drama, Escape. Phil & Maria, Steve & Bruce, Steve & Tony, Steve & Thor.
NOTES: I'd really like to hear your opinions on this one if you read it. Largely because I've cannibalised and rearranged whole sections of Ms. Singh's plot re: the Psy, the Changelings, Changeling bondmating (argh soulmates the pain it burns us precious), and pack relationships because, well, you kind of have to do some rearranging if you're going to try to meld two very different canons into one.

Once again, the lynchpin for this AU was Maria. Because she's totes a Psy.

And, yes, Clint and Natasha turn up in this story. (Because someone always asks that question.) Just in a later chapter.
